The garden is really taking shape, Shy. The mixed cacti/succulent/flowering garden beds look incredible. Your colour and texture co-ordinations are simply beautiful. Makes me want to start messing with mine again just for the fun of it. lol I'm always so envious of the variety of succulents able to be grown down south as opposed to up here. Echeverias, crassulas etc really struggle with out intense heat, so it's always lovely to see them flourishing in another garden. All of those succulents you've moved from the pots to the ground are going to love it. I'm not sure what fertiliser you use now but I use Searles Flourish Cacti and Succulent soluable plant food and my plants lose their mind over it. I can almost see them grow in front of my eyes. I do it every 2 weeks during their growth periods and I've seen more flowers and growth with it then I've ever seen before. The rope net is a clever idea and I think it should be fine to support the weight of the sweet peas as long as it doesn't deteriorate in the elements. I think it should make it through one season at least, if not more. Then there is always the wire mesh you could replace it with later. In regards to hiding that fence, you could consider getting some free pallets off market place, paint them white or some fun colours and then hang them on the fence with hooks and you can then hang planter boxes off it. It'll provide some instant coverage of those metal fences even as you wait for the plants to grow. Such a nuisance your mandevilla had mealy in it. I've not encountered an issue with that before so maybe it was just unlucky? Hopefully so. They do grow so fast and are very pretty for a bit of 'instant' gratification in the garden. Well, as instant as grow things gets at least. The thing the mealies love in my garden is my rarest and most difficult to get plant - my boophane disticha. I did another check of it a couple of days ago after thinking I'd gotten them all with the previous go round a couple of months before and dang it if those little critters weren't back at it! They love the curly leaves to hide out in. Your aloe cameronii is looking lovely - did you go on the hunt for them when you saw them on Laura Eubanks? That red, ugh, to die for! I saw them and went on the hunt as well. Eventually found a tiny baby one on the internet but then I went to one of my local backyard growers of all things - her cacti/succulent collection is breathtaking, curated over decades - and lo and behold, she sells them. So grabbed a couple of more for half the price, much more advanced and no postage. That was a good plant foraging day. Your yellow bouganvillea is stunning. I'm always drawn to those orange and yellows as well. I have a yellow euphorbia millerii which is going nuts in the garden atm and the yellow is such a nice colour against all that green. For your compacted garden bed I was thinking probably the best thing is going to be to just manually aerate the soil. Get one of those prongy pointed things you can run up and down the garden bed with or just use a mattock to turn over the soil. That's probably going to be the best and easiest tool to turn over the ground and get some air in there. Plus you already have all those darling little worms helping you out. Throw a bit of compost over the top once you've turned the soil and the worms will be thrilled and will get to work doing the rest and thanking you with all those worm castings. Then just dump your succulent soil on top and you're good to go. There is nothing more exciting to me then having a big blank canvas of a garden bed to go nuts with the possibilities over. With a bed that size, even as you're looking at doing it piece by piece, it might be worthwhile looking into getting a ton of soil delivered. I'm not sure the costings of that in Sydney but it should be definitely cheaper than doing it by the bag. And for those star pickets if you can't end up removing them (hopefully it'll just be a matter of unscrewing where they're anchored at the bottom there) then maybe string some solar lights on them? Paint them? Or put a pot in front of them with a taller cactus and then get one of those little decorative 40x40 cm screens to tie to it to make a little artwork display behind the plant?? I did something along that lines for a similar issue I was trying to resolve. Sorry for all the unsolicited advice. I'm terrible like that. :/ I get all excited for people with their garden projects and can't help myself. Just helped one of my plant killing sisters with her front garden little area - so satisfying - particularly when I'm just mapping out her garden and buying the plants and she's digging the holes. lol Your garden really is looking lovely and I hope you're finding a moment to go out and enjoy what you have accomplished so far. I have a terrible habit of focusing on what needs to be done in mine rather than just relaxing and enjoying what I have done. I'm really trying to work on that this year. It's hard because there are always weeds and things which need my attention but that's every gardeners plight. Can't wait to see your next video, they're always a fun edition to my Sundays now. :)

Lou!! You are a gardening fairy godmother! On my balcony, all I ever worked with was store-bought potting mix, so the soil stuff is an entirely new adventure. Thank you, I'm going to try aerating it, and hopefully that will address a lot of the weeds too. It's a very big job but I'm just going to take it day by day. The mandevilla IS growing quickly, it's just the mealy I need to stay on top of. And yes, I did see aloe cameronii video Laura Eubanks' videos and I had to have one! I got it from gumtree - it's the only one I've ever seen for sale. You're so lucky that you've been able to grab a few! I have to wait for mine to pup!

I love that you are experimenting! I am waiting for the day you get brave enough to start tossing out some seeds. Look into straw flowers (helichrysum), I think you'll be into them. Nasturtium, sweet peas, and poppies are all things I grow from seed because of how easy they are. There is this native Texas poppy I'm obsessed with because it's bad AF -- argemone albifora. It's so spiny and prickly!

One day!! Could very well happen with this new raised bed I'm clearing! However I'm still trying to work out what could grow there as it only gets 3-4 hours of direct sun. I like this idea of knowing that you can grow more specifically what you want, rather than what's just in stock at the nursery. Just need a bit more patience! Ooh the argemone albiflora is pretty. The flowers look so soft despite the rest of the plant being prickly.

Hello Sweet Shy! Your gardens are coming along beautifully! I love watching their evolution. I believe that black plastic in your garden was put there to keep down the weeds. Spring here but we had snow and an earthquake this week....go figure. 😊 I absolutely adore that yellow bougainvillea as it just pops! Have a good week!

Thank you Molly! I love the yellow bougainvillea too 💛I think it was definitely there to keep the weeds down between tenancies. Looks like whoever the previous tenants were had been planting directly to soil. Not sure if I should be using weed barrier fabric or try another option...? You have a beautiful week too!

@the.morning.chorus Hi Shy! When we moved into our home the upper landscaping had weed barrier fabric down that seemed to work well. We use mulch now as you can get different colors so it adds a nice contrast to your beds and keeps the weeds down. Some people buy the bags but we get it delivered by truck and my guys spread it.
@the.morning.chorus
@the.morning.chorus 4 ай бұрын
@@mollys1584 Thanks for this tip Molly! Can I ask, did you put the mulch as a layer below the additional soil, or just on top? I know some people use it as a direct replacement for weed barrier fabric (below the soil) but I don't know how effective it is.
@mollys1584

@the.morning.chorus Hello again! No, we just put it right on top of the soil. It does decompose and fade from the sun so we replace it every 2 or 3 years depending on how beat up it gets from the weather as some years are easier than others. We've used black mulch which makes the greenery of the garden really pop. Hope this helps!

Hi, I just love your videos and all your cacti and succulents. What a large garden you have in your new home. The gollum jade with those thick trunks you just planted in your garden bed is so so beautiful. Apologies if I may sound rude, I notice you also planted many cacti and succulents in the garden bed instead of in individual pots. In the event you need to move house, won't that be an arduous/herculean effort to repot them?
@the.morning.chorus
@the.morning.chorus 4 ай бұрын
Not at all, thank you for your kind words and thoughtful question! Absolutely, repotting them would indeed be an undertaking, but we're very keen to see them grow bigger and flourish in a larger space. When we're ready to move to our forever home, we'll hopefully be able to take some big plants with us, rather than buying more! It's also a valuable opportunity for me to hone my skills in design and arrangement and understand how the plants behave in the ground. So I'm more than willing to wear the cost of potting them up when we move to the next place :) Also, what you see in the garden beds is just a fraction of our plant collection. The majority of our specimen plants remain potted!

Your climate is so different than mine. I could start poppy, nasturtium and sweet peas in pots indoors and plant them out in late spring or direct sow in the ground when the soil warms up. The Nasturtiums will have to be tied up on the net trellis. They have no tendrils to grab on and don’t wind themselves around the support. Just in case you weren’t aware of this.
@the.morning.chorus
@the.morning.chorus 4 ай бұрын
Thanks for the heads up Jane! I'll keep that in mind when the nasturtium starts taking off. We are still experiencing quite warm days heading into April, and we generally don't get frost in our Sydney winters, but I guess we'll just see what happens to them over the next few months.

Are Nasturtium and peas perennials in Australia? They are annuals for me in Canada. Nasturtium are planted in summer and sweet peas just when we come out of winter as they like cooler temperatures. I think that the reason you had that plastic in the beds was that they were using it for weed suppression? Maybe? Anyway, the garden is starting to look great!
@the.morning.chorus
@the.morning.chorus 4 ай бұрын
Thank you so much Lili! Yup they are perennials as our winters are mild compared to other places round the world. I diefinitely think the black plastic was put down to keep the weeds from getting out of control between tenancies. I was hoping to plant directly to soil, but we may need to see how out of control the weeds get!
