The clicking in the blurred parts to exit edit mode is most likely to mimic what people expect out of a modal dialog say a website pops up for settings or something. It dims the background and you're supposed to be able to click out of the modal to dismiss it, so having that here as well makes sense, I can see a lot of people defaulting to that

Plasma fixes bugs pretty quickly and devs are responsive to complaints. It's completely opposite to Gnome, where they ignore you and if they respond, they tell you, it's all good, even if it's not. It's like talking with idiots. That is one of many reasons why I left Gnome and never looked back. Plasma is addictive ;). I love the shake cursor feature! I had to many times "loosing" the cursor and was wildly shaking it, in hope I will notice it somewhere. Now it's easier. Blurry part will be fixed, so no problem. You forgot about bugs with panel and moving icons on a task manager, but it's known and fixed with the next patch. Ah, what do you know? The patch update 6.1.1 is already waiting to be installed! Great!

Thank you so much for mentioning the edge barrier! I could tell it was a feature but I didn't know what it was called to disable it.
@insu_na
@insu_na 19 күн бұрын
the edge barrier feels momentum-based to me. if I move the cursor quickly between screens it's like it's not even there, but if I move the mouse very delicately then it takes a long time to overcome that barrier. maybe there's a "hidden" speed threshold above which the additional distance you set is ignored, and only when you move your mouse slow enough the distance calculation takes effect I still experience kwin freezing for 1-2ms when opening overview mode via the Meta key as shortcut (modifier-only shortcut), and I have my kwin cache in a tmpfs

KDE has a great bug tracker! I searched for my bug for a few minutes and found a few others that had my issue. I don't know if it was just luck, but they claimed to have fixed the issue in only a few days! (now I just have to wait until it hits my distro repos). I think the edge barrier isn't customizable enough, nor is it something that I would want to be on by default. In my opinion the velocity threshold to skip it needs to be configurable as well as the distance.

The funny part was that i had seen that issue on Windows before as well, but specifically only when playing Terraria in fullscreen. Doing that on Linux though, there was actually no flickering, it was the desktop that was flickering instead. Changing the refresh rate of my monitors down to 60hz also made the flicker go away.

As far as i understand its a monitor config issue where the minimum and maximum framerates are farther apart than expected so when it rapidly changes back and forth the brightness changes cause a flicker. This can be fixed by changing your monitors edid file to bring the minimum and maximum refresh rates closer together. I personally dont know how to do this but if someone figures it out please do share :)

14:20 Most definitely the screen switches to displaying the window's part of the framebuffer, but the window does not refresh it, leaving the previous image stored there to be displayed. I've seen similar behaviour plenty of times in various desktops by opening apps, usually while the processor is clocked slowly for laptop battery saving. Sometimes I've seen it in apps while the system is not slowing itself down or on my desktop, it's just expected occasional behaviour to me.

Funnily enough, adaptive sync is working fine for me (6800 XT, AOC Q24G2, Kernel 6.9.6, Plasma 6.1.0). When brightness flickering happens, the issue is either the kernel mode GPU driver or a faulty VRR implementation in the monitor (was quite common with earlier ones). What can also cause problems, is using mangohud and forcing on adaptive sync there while kwin or gamescope also enable it this can cause all sorts of madness, including flickering, laggy mouse cursor and horrid framepacing.

@@no_name4796 Yeah, proper tiling would be really nice. I could work with floating and their current tile layouts though if need be. I can understand that they don't support it yet, it is pretty niche, so most desktops don't (upcoming cosmic is the exception rather than the rule). @@XanTheXanadul i mean they have the useless cube, would be nice if they also had even just some simple autotiling like cosmic But i know it's not that easy, as there are lot of choises to make, like how to treat pop up window, what windows to not tile by default, and many more But autotiling is made me use hyprland instead of kde. And also the semplicity of changing keybindings, and the fact that you can literally just save the config file, and you get the 100% same environment on a new computer. Kde has lots of configurations in config file, but unless you backup the entire .config folder, it's a mess to keep track of what files you need to save or not

Although Firefox is WAY smoother on Wayland, but I can't use Wayland until Synergy supports it. I do still have Compositing disabled though, as KWin was always less stable with it on in the past. The only thing that threw me is file previews disabled themselves after the upgrade, yet Dolphin still had Preview enabled. Seems odd to have the Preview button there if previews are disabled in settings. Left me thinking something was broken for a couple of days.

the padding can't be in pixels. The density of your monitors is what matters, as two adjacent monitors may either not have the same resolution or not the same scale. Having the zone be displayed on each monitor taking those factors into account would be a nice feature though.

Like, I'll be trying to snap a window to the side, accidentally drag it to desktop 2 and be completely unable to move it back or to desktop 3. Before that my issue was a weird gimmic where windows being focused makes the desktop brighter, so there would be a big change whenever I minimized a window. I think the fix was to look in settings to disable a random effect, but I don't remember

5:17 That’s how I quit KDE Neon years ago. Bugs for days - from minor version update to the other they would introduce bugs and I got fed up with it. Now I use Gnome with a Ubuntu-based distro - I need work to do, I can’t afford breakages…

Neon is a essentially a niche KDE testing/development distro that is _supposed_ to break. Right now Fedora is the KDE distro for normies who want bleeding edge - updates are quick when they're relevant, but without becoming too unstable. It's on 6.1.1 already btw, that has bugfixes compared to what Brodie was reviewing

I have the "mouse feels like it's low framerate" issue, but in sway and hyprland, and instead of adaptive sync being the trigger, it was being in a high refresh rate (>120 Hz)!!! On plasma, the higher refresh rate causes a different problem - I get severe flickering artifacts on the right half of the screen. I thought it was an issue with the intel integrated gpu or the i915 driver. Brodie or anyone else reading this - If you create a bug about the adaptive sync issue, please post a link to it - I would love to add my issue as well.

It's great. I've been using Plasma for a year now as my daily driver. 6.1 has a few nice improvements. The thing that sounded good but is actually very annoying, in a dual-monitor setup, is the cursor sticking to the screen border (common side between monitors) unless you move the cursor very fast. It sounded nice to be able to click on items that are close to the border more easily, but in practice, it gets very annoying when you move your cursors very often between monitors. The cursor hide on typing is great, and frankly. That's something that Windows have had for over 2 decades. It was about time. Regarding the cursor shake thing, it's nice when you have hi-dpi displays (you can sometimes lose track of it indeed!). Unfortunately, it's too sensitive IMO and I often get the enlarged cursor even when I don't intend to shake it, just by moving the cursor normally (it's probably worse when you use a high DPI setting for your mouse). The fact that the cursor is just a bitmap and looks not so good when magnified is not that bad - unless you use a cursor size that is already big relative to the resolution of your display, the aliasing is not that noticeable, and using this feature for lower resolution makes no sense. All in all, Plasma is the DE that has the most features of anything in existence, including Windows and macOS. The parts that would require more work are the "KDE applications", which are not all great. I use Okular as my main PDF reader, and it's good enough, but it still have annoyances, such as a very high RAM consumption (never seen a PDF reader that was so memory hungry, and I'm talking about the "normal" memory setting). It also still doesn't have more than 10 entries and in recent files, it's not configurable, and it still doesn't have any session (saving the list of currently open files and being able to restore it).

11:10 honestly, I still want the old style power interface back. I'm so used to a single power button on my panel just opening old interface and then choosing either shutdown or reboot from there depending on what I want to do. It just looks better to have a single button on my panel, so at least having the option to use the old interface would be nice. On to a bug, I've noticed that if you use the Super key to open the app menu (start menu) then you can hold Super and press Ctrl to toggle open and close the menu. This is extremely annoying if you have any shortcuts that rely on both Super and Ctrl as you have to make sure to hit Ctrl first; in my case I use Super+Ctrl+"Arrow Key" to move windows to another screen, and I just end up moving the app menu to another screen if I hit Super before Ctrl. It also doesn't seem like old bug with Plasma Search where plugins aren't saved correctly and are reset on reboot is fixed yet. Personally it just feels like unnecessary clutter when I just want to search for my installed apps and it also shows system settings and stuff, so while not a massive thing I still find it annoying.

@@sharp14x That's not really a valid replacement for being able to just click a button on my panel using the mouse though. I found a way to bring the old interface back (excluding the timer) but having to copy and modify a file to do it instead of just having a toggle in the settings is not great. It doesn't have to be default, just give people the option to choose.

The setting at 15:24 seems to be working as intended but the name is far from clear. From what i've observed, it seems to refer to the cursor speed (in pixels traveled) needed for it to change between displays. If you set this to a low value, less cursor movement is required to change screens when reaching the border. If you set a high value, more movement is needed. If you set this value to... idk... 900px, and you move your mouse so slow that the cursor never jumps that amount of pixels on the screen, you will never change displays. But yeah, "Edge barrier" doesn't get that across imo.

I can finally switch from Gnome to Plasma. Plasma 6.1 is the first release that works with comparable performance to Gnome and without major crashes when running the Nouveau driver on RTX 2000+ series cards. Things are really coming together with Nouveau, nvk, and the mesa project as a whole for recent Nvidia cards. Between the GSP driver updates from kernel 6.7+ and this update to Plasma, Nvidia cards using Nouveau are becoming much more viable as a daily driver.

The freesync flicker bug is actually a hardware bug, some implementations of freesync are kinda crappy and when they're at the lower end of their freesync refresh range (the range that freesync can actually make the given frames smooth) will begin to flicker. I had a monitor that would do this on Windows in Unity's editor, insanely annoying, and it wasn't just me, there were many other's who's freesync displays would flicker too. My new monitors have never had this issue in Windows or Linux, there's likely a software workaround where you can disable freesync _before_ you get to the lower end of the freesync refresh range that would solve this.

Personally I kinda miss the all in one power menu... Let me just set a shortcut for one of them and Go from there. As for the edit mode jumping around, personally I think it's ok for the panel settings to cover the desktop (if that's open then it means you're not working on the desktop, especially now that the chances of misclicking the bar are low), as for the widget panel.... That's more up to discussion but you could make the panel retreat when you tak a widget out and come back when you hit a confirmation button that you're done with the widget. It'll probably be a more complicated thing to write tho
