basically plasters are in still-life category for sure , however plaster drawing trains you every aspects you required in real-life sketch and painting in the absence of color , it is about the form , anatomy , facade , value , mid-tone , stroke... , and these are essential to real-life sketch and painting , i have seen the classical drawings and paintings for years , like Juliette Aristides that kind , definitely no match to master Yim , master Yim is one of the greatest portrait and presentational painters of all time .

Tony, good point. As mentioned though, the absence of any color , hair texture and highlights the plaster cast is unique as a foundational tool. BUT, true to your words, essentially, live models preceded plaster casts!

The argument here is plaster cast drawing helps build a foundation for easier transition to draw from a live model which is challenging especially for beginning artists. The academic approach at Repin institut or florence academy or in China or in any Ateliers begin by drawing plaster casts then real humans forms...if you begin directly by drawing human forms you will not understand well values and structure.
