I admire the fact that you admit when your struggling. That's the reality of the trade, especially with old houses you never know what you're getting into. We'll done by the way. Take a tip from a older plasterer, if replastering old houses keep your hits smaller to allow for unforseen problems. You probably know but anyway respect and good luck to you.

Just ripped the plasterboard off my partition framed wall which I built. ..the plastering was a MASSIVE FAIL! I wanted so much to be able to plaster that partition wall. At the moment I am ½ way through fitting my kitchen which I self designed; it is a breeze compared to plastering and although I have taken down the plasterboard, I know from watching you Blaine, where I went wrong. 1) watching other channels prior to finding you two weeks ago, I installed the metal corner beeding straight onto the drywall. After watching your goodself, I realised that it is best to plaster the corner first, press beeding into place and then staple. I just put the filigree metal beeding straight onto the corner and used Knauf Fill and finish 60. I tried to get the external corner right but found that I had created a dip. 2) MY NEXT BIG FAIL! Yesterday after watching your channel the most (you are amazing), I purchased British Gypsum Multifinish, I decided to give it a go. However, I accidentally added the BG to tepid water.. this ruined the plaster mix. I calculated it just like you said 12½ litres water to 25KG of BG - 1.2 litres of water to 2 KG of BG, but the warm water "cooked it" and although it looked *thin (due to it be like custard - which thickens as it cools), the plaster went off and became unworkable. Also, *because it looked thin, I added more BG to the mix.... big mistake! 3) Mistake Mistake Mistake and FAILURE... making up a batch and taking too long to apply it.😂😂😂 Anyway, Blaine I haven't given up. This week I am enrolling onto a taster plastering course.. 🎉 Love your channel, it is the best!

I was surprised you decided to do a big hit knowing the circumstances of the hardwall....brave man 🤣 I always test the background with a bit of skim first....Apply a patch to the hardwall, hit the ceiling and and test the patch to see how it's pulling in, if in doubt, leave it out for its own gauge for an easy life 👌👊👍 Great work buddy!

I used bonding and left it to completely dry. As soon I put the top coat on, it started setting very fast and it was stressful. Just had to keep going and now I understand why. Thank you.

Crazy how we all go at things differently I personally would of put less on if I knew I had a few walls with more suction on them its hard to tell the size of the walls on the video but it looks like a decent lift of skim you put on. Am based in Northern Ireland and very few boys would do wet angles we always break up unless it's small areas but if there's a few days work in it we,d break up the walls from the ceiling. But no criticism here it's good to see a man with passion n pride in his work. I always just wonder how yous guys that do the videos have the time to do them 😂 as the plastering always keeps you busy 😂

In that situation I two coat pva over the hardwall. I’d skim the ceiling and fireplace then concentrate on the walls separately. Plasterer of over 25 years and never had a problem using pva ! Enjoy the videos tho !

Nice spray down with water to start with .. then couple of thick coats of pva applied with a thick sleeve sorted 👍🏻 I feel your pain tho as I’ve been there a few times 😅 hard trade for sure 💪

Nice tip re: the grip bond and staple gun. I will set the corner bead into the base coat usually, but its always good to have alternatives.

Awright mate, great video, have you tried the the additive called Extra time? It doubles the set time of multi, even though it will still take up fast, it will give you time to catch up on yourself

use the sbr straight not diluted and allow it to fully dry before skimming. It will kill suction completely, hell of a work around though. Your videos are brilliant and its good to see how problems do happen and how to get on with them

Retired two years ago thank God after 49 years of it , plastering has changed so much since I started , I remember when there were no beads for plaster or render no self adhesive scrim all corners and drips returned with woods , but that's another story , remember using hardwall on price in the Prince of Wales hospital massive job mixed the stuff in cement mixers , after completing a room the Clark of the works would Come in with his own feather edge checking fo hollows and straightness and plum , he was a nightmare to all of us plasters on that site , yes we've all been there mate sometimes we wish we layed on more and sometimes less , it's a stress job no matter how experienced we are , I have respect for all in this trade well done mate 👍

Fair play for showing a failure.. personally when I'm using hardwall I gule everything especially plasterboard that's had HW on without exception. I've watched it failed on an apprentice and that's was enough for me. Bonding got more body also find knocks up better..and pinks over lovely.

To all you guys thinking of plastering for a living. If you like been stressed to the eye bulls every day , being a rate miserable soul. Then yes it’s for you. I spent nearly 20 years doing it , not good for your mental and emotional well-being, fortunately for me I was am now in the building preservation industry ( damp proofing) which for the remedials you do need plastering as a skill … but you don’t neeed to doit under the pressure of site work and the pressures you put on yourself regarding m2 you put on a day.. Become a pca trained damp technician or surveyor… industry is a great place be , especially if you have the skill of being able to plaster. 🙏🏼namaste

Looks great in the end. I am not a plasterer. If you ever encounter a terraced stone house like I live in, where the salts come through, plaster falls off, no cavity wall etc, please do a video on rendering for that damp issue. Rising damp??

How you could make a video in those circumstances is beyond me . Its mad how we're all different for focus. My focus would be best playlist blasting in my ears. Ive never used hardwall on board. Mind when i was an apprentice a guy in the class did that instead of bonding and im pretty sure it fell off in 1sheet off the board and the lecturer made an example about using the right materials for the right backround. we had very similar experience on Friday.. we follow a builder who builds cabins so always plasterboard work. this recent job he ripped out a kitchen and prepped the walls himself. I got told he gave it 3 coats of pva. anyhow such a simple jobs skimming 4 walls turned into a nightmare. it's the closest to losing a set I've experienced. it just pulled in rapid..!! when we finished we saw a bucket with some pva in it. it must of been about 80%water to 20% pva. the mix was so weak. from now on I will always pva myself. in them situations my advice is to just keep calm, get your angles and around sockets right and the middles will sort them selves out.

There’s nothing worse than a builder who’s prepped a wall with piss wet PVA. It happened to me so many times in the past until I decided that I’d do all the prep…Because it bites you in there arse others wise ha! Great hearing from you. Cheers!

I agree with some of the comments. You should of wet the hardwall first. Sbr is for sand and cement as an admmixture to prevent shrinking. Pva would be better had you hydrated the hardwall first. You should use Thistle gyprime on hardwall that you've left in the future mate. Save your arms and fire crazing.

The spray bottles are a good job for spraying the wall down for the suction before putting pva on. They are also good for trowelling up they leave the wall with no fat works. Anyways nice video👍

Plasterer myself, Hardwall is a bloody nightmare if left 2 days onwards even after unibonding. Im sure all us in the trade have had this happen on more than one occasion. Nice job fella.

I always found a wetter mix pulls in quicker on high suction backgrounds a little bit thicker skim and a fatter first coat will see you through

I reckon two coats of sbr leaving the first to dry thoroughly before applying the second would have helped u out in this situation as well blain by slowing up the take up mind u that said like others have already said u certainly bit off a lot by tackling all them walls and lid In the same set fair play to ya ur braver than me

I'm a chippy as I've said before but been plastering for years.. I use a big roller with a painters bucket for sealing walls and I've never watered down SBR only pva.. why don't you use a twitcher (I call them) ie a corner trowel and I was always taught to plaster in the same direction and never against the grain of how you laid it on.. I'm not mocking you, you do a fantastic job every time but it's just questions I have. I learnt form an old mate but have nobody to ask directly now. If I'm sealing high suction areas I will always do 1st coat the day before and the 2nd before you hit it that way it seals better.. I've found two coat sealing the same day sometimes interferes with the 1st coat then the plaster starts curing at different rates and you end up with a cellulite effect if your not careful.. many a times I've struggled with renovation work especially if you have a customer who loves banging the heating on and right up in the rest of the house and like you say chasing the tail.. brilliant video and like so many are saying how you cope with carrying on filming is beyond me... legend 💪 👊 👍

Not all plasterers Yous corner trowels mate u can plaster without very easily but sometimes just nice to run a corner trowel down If the angles aren't good

I do plaster but not every day just like once or twice a month, if speed and neatness is a thing than a corner trowel has to be the way forward as its just so much easier for me anyway else I always dig the adjacent wall no matter how careful I am but I understand each to there own and everyone does things differently 👍

Thanks pal! It’s best to plaster in 2 directions because it makes your walls flatter. If you just go 1 way then it’s not guaranteed to be flat…some people don’t like it because it can show your imperfections but it’s just good practice to go both ways. One decent coat of sbr would have done the job. I’ve sbr’d old render many times and the suction is literally zero after, almost want a bit of suction sometimes as the sets take ages

l always use PVA, you can use a thicker mix to make it harden faster, never had a issue with porous spots with PVA, but then I've never use SBR to seal a wall for top coat, I think you did not go liberal enough with your coat of SBR, I never thin SBR when I key a wall for render and I always use the runs as a guide to say it's wet enough because SBR does not migrate through substrates easily because of the latex and is more expensive, where PVA is the opposite and readily penetrates hence why it's used to seal floors and it's very cheap, just a thought

I'm getting ready to plaster over drywall that had been flipped over so we will be plastering the back side. I read somewhere that putting primer on would make it go right through the board and not lay on top as it would would applying to the front side. What is your experience? We have done a closet without primer and it seems to be ok We are also using the blue drywall in places. Does it require the primer? Thanks for your helpful videos!

Good video pal. But to aviod that. Just put a little bit less on. I would have done the 2 ceilings and fire place. Then done the walls after. Work smarter , not harder. But either way you caught it just at the right time. Dont worry ive been there before ? When your on your own. Buckets need cleaning , walls drying quick. Its hetic, but we all love it.

I enjoy your videos but I've seen a few jobs where hard wall had just all blown on painted walls and also I have been to a few jobs where hardwall has been applied to plasterboard and all you have to do is bang the wall with your hand and it all falls off, definitely should never use it on plasterboard and if you are going to use it on painted surfaces use blue grit.if you use it on a kitchen or a bathroom paint it will probably all blow

I don’t miss them days when I was an apprentice we would float a room out in one day with browning then skim it the next day I would soak all the walls down with a hose before we put sbr on them and it still pulled in like mad i guess it’s what made me quick at skimming but I loved skimming over sand and cement

That’s weird, I’ve switched to sbr and it’s been brilliant, no issues on the last few jobs. Starting a big 4 bed tomorrow, gonna sbr all the old walls which are lathe and plaster. Then render mesh to strengthen it up. Ceilings are over boarded so hopefully no issues with my ceilings!

I wish you had done this video a few days earlier. Im no plasterer and had the exact same issue after leaving hardwall to go off over a few days! I gave it 3 coats of pva (wish I had known about the SBR as I have some of that as well) as it was just sucking it in like a sucky thing! The multifinish was going of quicker than I could get it on the wall but I got there in the end, but I did end up with some crazing which I had to keep wetting and trowling to get rid of it. Every day is a school day and I wont make that mistake again now I know what the cause was. Thanks for the vids and keep them coming, as you have turned me from a complete novice to someone haft competent 👍

EXACT same experience (and resolution) - 1 week plastering course doesn't prepare you for this! The other thing for anyone watching with limited experience is the sheer hard work involved - I could not have done the hardwall and finish on the same day - that's aging for you...

As an ex stove installer I can tell you the board you have used isn’t fire rated common mistake I used to used cement board or fire board. Ps good job chasing that plaster drying to fast 😅

. Tbh I think the situation was totally beyond your control, in an ideal world once the hardwall has gone off enough you can skim straight on it and it’s a dream but illness ballsed it up for you. Me personally I prefer bonding, only use hardwall if it’s specified. Great work though to pull it back from the brink, I’ve been in that situation many times over the years but like you say keep your head and keep going, your skill and experience will turn it around.

Would you say another good way out of the woods is to crack open the sponge float on one or two of the walls when you start losing the race?

Issue with that is cause it drys so quick it's getting sponge lines out

Far be it for me to tell u but I reckon ur sponge float technique that uve demonstrated on numerous occasions would have helped u out on this one by livening up that top coat it might have bought u a bit more time to flatten in just a thought

fair play keeping on top of that set, I can imagine how fast them walls were setting on top of that hardwall and it stinks lol. Now its warming up I keep a pressure bottle like they use to spray decking with full of water just incase anything needs spraying down

Well done for the graft you put in. But also why not do your ceiling then move onto a few walls etc. Surely that's good advice rather than the stress of what you did.

It’s very good advice and usually the way I work. But the others ceilings needed some cables running through so hard to wait for the Sparks. You are right though…it’s the best way 👍

Nothing worse than that stress when it's all gone belly up! Had that myself last week never used blue grit before didn't mix enough skim! Got it in the end thankfully know now for next time! The learning curve is massive lol

@@PlasteringForBeginners quick question mate what's causes blistering also like little holes which are murder to fill in with the second coat! Only get this when I'm over skimming or going over bonding?

You’re applying your second coat too fast. Because the Bonding is rough if the first coat moves then it creates air pockets in the first coat. Once the second coat is applied then the air can’t escape. If you let the first coat take up a little bit then the first coat won’t move which means no air trapped. Hope this helps pal 👍

Quick tip if this ever happens give your first coat a quick wet trowel with plenty of water and that will catch you back up

Thank you man for such a nice videos.Some of products that you have used are rubish like plastic trowel 90 cm.Best for diy is 60 cm stainles stee on plastic and refina super flex 18 inch.Rest is not for real if you use finish 5 grade on lamp,like Knauf super finish premixed.

Firstly thank you for these videos. Can you please help me? What if I left the second coat dry completely for 2 days but it still need the skimming coat. Is that ok to use PVA and just carry on?

There are several different products you can use to slow down the suction. I don't believe SBR is available in the States. We would use PlasterWeld or Acro60. I've even used a white glue and water mixture.

I never use hardball. Only ever bonding. I’m half way through doing a whole house over artex ceilings. I’ve done loads over artex but this house the multi is going off so fast I can barely keep up with it. I even put on 3 coats of pva but it still pulls in really quick. Nuisance..

If you leave hardwall to next day or longer you need to spray the background with water prior to application of primer this is due to the background/ hardwall being extremely porous and it’s a thirsty material. That’s as far as I can see you’re only flaw with using it here. Also even if you pulled that off generally if you don’t put that moisture back into hardwall before priming then it produces hairline cracks like crazy paving as it continues to pull moisture after you’ve finished and cannot trowel anymore. Water is our friend as plasterers

Top job not a fail that ! You just chased your tail all day it happens ! I would of give the hardwall once first coat of skim a good neat pva over the lot for second skim coat .

Pva the board works sound with hardwall, had the same, customer buys it so you need to use it, couple layers of glue and it's bang on

I love your videos they are so helpful, I have recently done my property maintenance course and love the plastering and rendering . I am about to do a ceiling for the first time, It is just plaster board. I was just going to plaster a thick coat then a thinner coat without PVA is this a bad idea? I have also just bought the Ragni flex lite thanks for the heads up. That will help me polish the plaster at the end. 😅

Hi Blaine. Love your work and videos mate. Really helped me out in my new plastering career. Just wanted to ask your opinion on Make Good Bonding? I used it to sort some horrible walls in a property recently and it came up great for plastering over. Just wanted your thoughts on it, man.

I’ve not tried it but it’s funny you said that because someone else here said the same thing. I’ll be trying it because I’ll be honest, I don’t really like BG Bonding. It can bubble up so I’ll be trying that “Make Good”. Cheers pal 👍

When it very occasionally goes horribly wrong, (last time for me was a small return - it was 10yr old plasterboard and sucked the life out of it) I just think positively and if you lose it - I just remember you could always leave that wall and skim it again with a third coat on its own after PVAing the plaster so its never the end of the world. Also as one gets older there's a time to reduce personal stress and just do smaller hits wet to dry do them well and relax, why bust a gut when the chippies are on more cash for less effort, :) skillful nevertheless, but plastering does take its toll on your body.

Would you use bonding if you have a plasterboard brick transition or hard coat? I've blocked off an old wood fireplace but the side protrudes by a brick and a piece of plasterboard would protrude too much.

Yep...thats a no no. If they are using that fireplace/log burner he needed a special board.

@@matthewedwardfield yes, as a registered HETAS installer there is an onus of due diligence to check the specifications and manufacturers recommendations when looking for an appropriate board
