Quality over quantity!! When builders brag of how much there spread covers in m2 in a day… and then it gets painted and full off bulges/trowel marks .. mess everywhere on floor.. don’t rush just take pride in the finish and be clean , if an average size room can be skimmed out in a day then that’s good going… speed only comes the longer you been spreading.. but there’s 2 types of speed … 1 quick and messy 2 quick and clean … for any plasterers who are new or even just 2/3 years experience behind them this lad is worth following before you pick up any bad habits

Wish my boss had your outlook mate . He’s always just “go , go , go” . I done a 6 week course on 2 coat skimming , dot dab, filling , ceilings etc and my boss wants to go 100mph . I like to take my time and get it looking minted , actually gonna say this to him tomorrow about how it’s better to have that nice good looking finish over all the rooms being done ✅

I would really recommend that beginning plasterers do NOT try and do two coats from one mix. You need some experience behind you to make that judgment about whether the area is small enough, and also if the plaster still has enough life left in it. One of the most annoying mistakes is thinking "ah, still seems to be fine", and then it all starts turning on you too early to save it. Until you feel confident with two mixes, I would say don't add in these complications. It's so much better to take a little more time and get it right than to have to fix up a botched job (particularly a ceiling...)
@PlasteringForBeginners

I agree mate! Beginners should be focusing on the basics and sticking to 2 seperate mixes. That’s the process I teach to any beginner who comes into our programmes...I’m just showing examples to people/Plasterers who want to up their game 👍👍

😥as one who rushed to finish up for dinner and the next day had whole chunks on the floor because...yeah! I stopped spraying the water heavily before each trowel and misting after before smoothing...oh well. Guess I just got more practice time in patching before my last full coat.

Hi blaine thank you so much for providing these tutorials, I have learnt so much from watching your videos, I have just started taking on clients after having passed a course at college but I am struggling with the technique of putting it on the walls in that flowing motion up and down without the trowel leaving the wall , I can see you have given good tips here but could you do a video soon please in slow motion close please, and again thank you for the videos they have improved me instantly

Thanks pal and well done with your Plastering! This technique takes time and I must admit that it’s quite advanced! It’s all about the pivot at the top of the trowel movement - that’s when the tough part is. It comes with time but just keep practicing...you’ll get it!!

Your videos and explanations are brilliant, they really helped me in getting my first wall right after a few failed attempts, but having said that, can i clarify that you're not calculating your water incorrectly? I tried your 12.5 litre mix, and this was very thick compared to your videos, brand new bag of multifinish, mixed with a good paddle mixer in about three minutes. After experimenting, i work with 15 litres of water per bag, and this mix looks exactly like the one you use in your videos. Are you working the volume of your bucket out correctly? Sorry to question the master, i found every other detail in your video worked spot on apart from that one.

Great tips and thanks for making this available, but I suggest you do a future video on how to handle difficult situations, such as when the plaster starts to set and time it running out. Is there a retardant that can slow down the setting process once it has started, either in the bucket or on the wall? If the walls harden and what remains is a mess, do you recommend grinding it off, patching it with more plaster, or maybe some other actions? With experience like yours, this is probably seldom an issue, but for beginners such information might save the day.

I like to remind myself that there's always the option to just scrape it all off and start again >< Obviously you don't want to be doing that too often, but it's easy to scrape off when it's still semi-solid. Of course you can always go over it once dry, but also you've added more thickness/weight and that's not always ideal. I actually did a scrape off with a ceiling recently. I thought I'd risk a bag of plaster that was about a week out of date. But unfortunately it didn't pay off - by the time I'd got from one end of the room to the other, the plaster was too dry to flatten. I don't regret the decision because honestly I just didn't see it coming together, and the second time (with a new bag) went perfectly.

Hi Blaine. Do you put you 2nd coat on straight away after flattening the first? So is your first coat still wet?
@PlasteringForBeginners
@PlasteringForBeginners 2 жыл бұрын
I always Speedskim first and then apply the second coat. However, I never really skim small areas anymore so the plaster is always semi-dried. You never want to apply your second coat to really wet plaster because it can blister 👍

Just a quick one. Love the work but I noticed when you was plastering room on one hit you had put plasterboard on wall on its side rather than upright so the was one continuous joint in middle. Is there a right or wrong way to board walls
@BigSteveFairchild
@BigSteveFairchild 2 жыл бұрын
In the Us you will see all there boards done horizontally rather than vertical to be honest it doesn’t really matter but most standard wall heights are especially new builds are standard height is 2.4m ( standard plasterboards are 2.4 m ) so many board them vertically

Do you use a hard trowel or the nelaflex to put the 2nd coat on? I prefer the nelaflex as it goes on flatter and really no need for the speed skim. I really don't know if thats the way to do it so thought I'd ask lol only been plastering for a year n half and never had any training but doing good so far so I have been told

Get the 600mm 👍 I'm a plasterer of 20 years and I only ever use the large speedskim on big walls or ceilings I prefer the amount of control you get on the 600mm speedskim as well Only get the 1200mm if you are doing bigger jobs That's my opinion anyway

If your not fast enough tape it off and work into it. Best bet is getting another spread on it with you throw it on together. Get a speed skim to flatten with saves loads of time between coats

how do you know when a second coat needs to be applied? and if the wall or ceiling starts drying where you did bonding and the rest is wet then what u do? Everyone on youtube says how to apply plaster but nobody says the big things just mumbling around. Check your video and check others' videos, same thing. I am a beginner in plaster I put the plaster on walls or ceilings in no time but always happens to me the plaster is not drying uniform. In Some places is too dry other places is too wet and I never get it perfect. I feel all the time so disappointed and frustrated. Is not that I want to do this job as a trader but I like to "master" the skill. In the end, if you check with a lamp my plaster you can observe uneven parts.

Something else that will make it quicker if you have got a lot of electrical boxes, get those cables tucked up inside the box so they don’t get in the way when you are plastering, better if you can sweep your trowel over the box , noticed that Blane’s was hanging out, top man though!
