Someone asked about "PE melting to stop bullets" and per an SME in the armor industry that's not how PE works. "Strong fibers function as a membrane and stress wave guide. The higher the strength of the fibers, the more stress they're able to take before failure -- and the higher their elastic wave speed, the more they're able to engage fibers over a large volume of the ballistic panel. When a UHMWPE plate is hit, the top layers (up to about 1/2 of the panel, but usually closer to 1/3rd,) are perforated very rapidly due to shear failure, compressive failure, and tensile failure in the fibers, but they disrupt and decelerate the bullet. After that bullet has deformed and decelerated to a certain threshold velocity, it can no longer break those high-strength fibers, and delamination and plastic deformation through the entire ballistic panel become the dominant energy sinks. ...Melting has absolutely nothing to do with it, but fiber strength is very important... "

I have no problem with the company asking you to destroy their product. I would like to see more companies in more industries do the same. In this case, it really isnt a lot different then a viewer sending in a homemade plate for testing. And I mean really; what is a shooting focused channel gonna do, say "No we dont want to shoot at your thing"?

Some good quality poliethylene there. Most PE plates that can stop m855 are about 28-30mm thick. Nice results for a "made in china" plate.
@googoo7750

Made in china probably only means the assembly not the source of the polyethylene fiber. Just like dyneema hb 50 that used some made in USA plates are sourced from the original supplier based in Netherlands.

I see a lot of vests and plates claiming 3, 3+, and much fewer claiming 4, except the bulky "swat" blocks. And "meets" actual NIJ certification, not a genuine certification. What I'd like to see is what stops a range of .308 rounds since 7.62x51 is a common threat, and especially with a NATO or heavy game load, they tend to go through anything less than NIJ4. And minimal rear deformation.

The low velocity coupled with the hardened steel make it like an ice pick. As long as the bullet doesn’t deform PE doesn’t seem to want to melt around the projectile and catch it. sB193 in 5.7 will do the same thing against rigid IIIa that uses PE

Nice review. I wonder if the Vism brand, poly 3+ plates would also stop m855 out of a 16 inch barrel?, they have vary similar thickness and weight. Also perhaps you should consider testing poly level 3 plates with a 3a backer, so folks could use these type plates with a 3a vest and have some data on effectiveness. Thanks so much.

I spent 15 years at dyneema. It's good when it's good. But man is bad when it's bad. After all that I would wear it if weight was everything. Otherwise 3+ high end steel. It just works every time. We spent so many years perfecting how to get dyneema to get to this point. One mistake in processing and it fails.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with trying to get a 14.5" AR these days. I know you're probably trying to chase as many data points as you can, but I really think that the only people who care about 14.5" are lusting after the GWOT aesthetic and not much else. It doesn't offer anything substantial over some of the other barrel lengths that are more popular these days. While plenty of 14.5" barrels and uppers are for sale online, I really don't ever see them for sale in physical stores these days and I think that's indicative of that particular length dying out. If you absolutely have to have another data point, I think a 12.5" would be more interesting. It's not all that popular probably for some of the same reasons as 14.5", but in my opinion is more interesting since they can be run with a mid length gas system. I don't own one, nor do I plan to, but the concept interests me more than the compromises of 14.5".
@dbmail545
@dbmail545 2 жыл бұрын
From what I have seen, the improvement of a 16" tube over a 14.5" is negligible with 5.56x45 while the difference in handiness is significant.
@Seth9809
@Seth9809 2 жыл бұрын
Ballistically, the difference is serious and someone going shorter than 14.5" is getting a barrel length that matches Delta and such, which to me see like going after the GWOT aesthetic even more. Shorter barrels (Without fiddling with the gas system) is really rough on reliability.
