chapter 34 - Plasticity index of Soil
Plastic Index ( PI or Ip ) of soil is defined as the difference between the numerical value of liquid limit and plastic limit. Plasticity Index depends on the amount of clay present in the soil. A high value of PI indicates an excess of clay in the soil and that results in greater plasticity of that soil.

A3 soil is a non plastic soil means (PI=0) you can find it in AASHTO classification system these are mainly the fine sands with less than 5% of fines
