Excellent video and very timely. I was in the military for 33 years and my son is a police officer and we were just having this conversation about plate carriers on Father's Day. When I discovered his department would allow him to purchase his own plate carrier as long as it is black rather than use the department issued plate carrier I bought him a Crye JPC 2.0 with multi curve level 4 plates. You are so right about buying quality plate carriers and the way you described sizing the plates was one of the best explanations I have seen on any KZfaq channel. Level 4 plates are just there to protect your vital organs. You also make excellent points about not loading down your plate carrier with miscellaneous junk for every possible scenario. Glad I stumbled across your channel today and look forward to watching more of your content.

That's awesome you were able to do that for him and I'm glad you're enjoying the content. I wear issued soft armor on duty but am authorized whatever I want as long as it's Coyote, multicam or ranger green for tac work, training and response rigs

This video got you a subscriber. Thank you for saying the shit nobody wants to hear, but everyone needs to. I'm an old man now(54), and I can tell you that after spending 30 years in the Army, speed and mobility are THE answer. I don't move like I used to, but jumping out of planes and rucking to the range or the field does that to you. It ain't the years, it's the mileage. I do still wear plates, because DUH, but I don't carry much more than you talked about. 3-5 mags, IFAK, a small-ish fixed blade knife(because you always need one for something), admin stuff(map, compass, protractor, pencil, etc.), a CamelBak and not too much more. I can add a GP pouch for pogeybait and fire making if I need to. I simply can't bear the weight like I used to. It's hard to admit that, but it's true. I don't have a team or a squad or platoon to back me up any more, so protracted gunfights simply aren't on the menu. If I need more ammo that what I mentioned, I shouldn't still be there. The thing I have done over that long career and still practice today is making all those rounds count. Thanks again for a great video, keep 'em coming.

@@unclefreedom213there's nothing wrong with having 12 or 14 mags on your plate carrier as well as one in your rifle what you fail to remember is the civilian has no resupply we are not in the military where we have everything we need and it can be flown in and dropped off personally I don't carry a IFAK I do carry 4 tourniquets on me that is to simply slow the bleeding once again not only do we not have resupply we do not have a medical tent where I can be worked on I am simply in the fight until I die that is what people need to realize I train carrying as many mags as possible why because I remembered nobody's going to give me one when I run out just something to think about brother
@unclefreedom213

@gregoryminor5823 carry them in a bag or a vehicle if you're engaged and you've burned 7 mags and they're still fighting you. you need to move 100 loaded mags won't save you from a determined force if you can't maneuver. Your TQ logic is flawed a junctions sight wound think pelvis, armpit, hips can cause major bleed that a tq can't and will not fix you have to pack those with pressure unless you're running a junctional TQ in which case you're immobile. chest wounds require occlusion dressings to seal it up even with plates it can be a problem

@@unclefreedom213 I carry plenty of mags on my person as well as in my my tourniquet method is not flawed I said it the first time we do not have any medical tents to go back to we do not have anyone to operate on us nor do we have all of the equipment needed so it's simple I'm in the fight until I die the tourniquet is only to stop bleeding where it can be used so that I can stay in the fight maybe if we survive fighting for two years we will have acquired things from the enemy so that we will have medical tents to be able to go back to but until then I'm in it until I die the rest of y'all want to run around looking slick go for it that's on you just don't look to me for a MAG when you showed up with three or four this land actually mean something to me my family came here in the year 1623 before it was a country my family's name is well-known up and down the East Coast there are plaques and monuments thanking them for the things that they had achieved to help expand the colonies my family's blood and sweat runs deep through the soul of this once-great nation I will do what I have to to preserve it for my daughter and grandchildrenthese generations today or weak and pathetic I would rather fight this fight so that my future generations do not have to deal with it I'm ready to die that's not just talk I have no problem dying for a righteous cause in a yawl that want to look cool pop off a few rounds and then run away go for it more power to you

@gregoryminor5823 your basic premise about lack of resupply is all too true. However, you also can't carry everything with you. You'll be too slow and lack ability to sprint or maneuver. There are other options -- though all have one or more downsides, as well as advantages. If you're defending a home or Homestead, the obvious solution is to have necessary supplies cached at your primary defensive points/posts. Ammo cans make a safe storage bin and have strong handles for moving. Choose the size/ # of cans based on how much you need to store vs. any needs to move the items. The larger ammo cans -- say for large caliber rifles or even mortar rounds -- are excellent for high-use fixed points. If we get to that point -- and let's hope/pray we never do -- older kids and younger teens unable to wield weapons could be your ammo carriers and help resupply posts under attack. (Dangerous? SURE. But less dangerous than marauders/looters gaining control of the home and eliminating all witnesses to the crime. Yes, they will kill the teens and kids, too. So, come up with a plan for your self-resupply and teach everyone what, how and when to implement.

Excellent Video! My military service pre-dates Plate carriers and chest rigs by more than a few years so all this is new to me. I now know how get what I need not necessarily what I think I need. Since I have rifles in all three rounds 5.56, 7.62x39 and 7.62x51 the plate carrier with the interchangeable placards seems to make the most sense. The physical side is going to take longer to fix. I was laid up for 2/3 of 2021 and even longer than that in 2022. I have been working my way back into better physical shape since the first of the year. I really learn a lot from your videos.

And getting a setup based off of your needs. Pay attention to the direction you put your mags into your carrier, so you dont load a mag in backwards in the heat of the moment.

This is a really good refresher for the peeps that “armored up”during the Germ Days. The key point to remember about armor that always bugs me is what you say at 23 minutes and 50 seconds in. Face shot. Nut shot. You’re fucked. You may as well keep yourself as light as possible. I see many of these guys today in the Ukraine, wearing extra abdominal armor to keep their guts from being blown out from a drone-dropped hand grenade. They adapted to the situation. It’s hard to tell what your risk factor will be a future zombie apocalypse, but no doubt flexibility of movement is your best friend. War is destruction and death, and in the end, there’s nothing that can protect you 100%. You just may get to live to fight another day, and die then.

@unclefreedomvalleytacticsa7521 an old friend of mine is in law enforcement and when he started, he would tuck steel plates behind his soft armor. He's a beefy dude and says the weight doesn't bother him but who knows if he's trying not to cry His reason is he already had the steel plates and believes the soft armor should slow down and catch the round and the steel will stop anything that may push through. I don't know if it's legit but I'd be interested in seeing that tested

Finally someone who says it; unless you have a need for it, don’t put it on. Big difference in needs between people in Military and LE and Civilian use. Being a commo guy I laughed at the ATAK part, so many people will buy a mount and case and just use it to hold their phone. What they don’t realize is the actual military version is meant to work with a radio compatible with it, and it’s cell services are disabled. If SHTF and you lost cell services, you’re screwed, better hope you know land nav.

I have a shellback carrier with cheaper (heavy) rma lvl 4 plates with a placard that holds 3 rifle mags a multi tool and flash light. The cummerbund would also hold 8 mags if i wanted, I’m in the process putting together medical to go in the cummerbund. The idea of having medical on the front of my carrier never appealed to me as a lot of people are taught to aim center mass and i don’t want holes in my chest seals. As a “prepared citizen” it mostly just sits in the closet,i dry fire and wear it to the range sometimes. I set it up a few years back when i heard some politicians talking about banning lvl4 plates and had the same thought as you lol.

I'll preface this by saying "I use poly/ceramic plates." But for steel, I think they make sense in an environment where you might get hit 2-3 times over 6 years of living in Somalia. There are 1 or 2 companies which have great spall protection coating. And there are kevlar bags for spall protection.
@woodsghost9088

And you ask "do you need a Crocodile Dundee knife and 5 mags and ..." crap. To answer that, there are guys with lots of combat experience who say "I never used more than 2 mags in a fight so all I carry is 4" and other guys who say "based on my combat experience I carry 9-13 mags because we USED that much." I'm not here to argue anything other than, yes, I need a Crocodile Dundee knife. Back off. ;) My only answer is "depends what you are doing." I don't have enough experience to say "THIS is the right answer for everyone in all situations and contexts."

True on all points I have shot the frag bags for steel and they do work quite well actually. I also agree it depends on what you're doing we had guys in the Army with 14 mags but of all my use and experience I've either had it figured out within 5 or had broken contact. If you have a dundee knife you have to say "that's a knife" in the proper accent everytime you draw it

I've been on the fence between ceramic and steel. For SHTF type stuff where that will likely be the last set of plates you'll have access to, I'm leaning towards steel with frag bags. It's heavier and still has a spall risk. But they're generally more robust and durable longterm. I've seen guys damage ceramics just by dropping them. My thinking goes more along the lines of your Somalia example. If I've found myself getting shot multiple times in one engagement, I've already made some terrible decisions that no plate will likely save me from. In that case, I'm probably not making it home either way. But being able to take a few rounds over several years could make a difference. Ceramic would definitely be better if switching them out if damaged was an option. I need to do more research into poly. I hadn't heard of it until fairly recently, but I guess it could be the best option. Though I'm guessing it's much more expensive.
@woodsghost9088
@woodsghost9088 Жыл бұрын
@@ryanburns3921 in short, Poly let's green tip and 7N6 punch through. It may let other rounds punch through, I don't know. I suspect Chinese mild steel core would go through. There is work being done to make poly stand up to rounds will a little steel in them and my understanding is those efforts are successful and the plates are already being sold. For bigger bucks. Another issue with poly plates is they break down over time. They are basically milk jug plastic and studies have found they lose bullet resistance when exposed to heat. This seems to be more of an issue for soft armor made of fibers and left in cars in the summer where it can get over 150F. I believe what I saw is that poly rifle armor is thick enough it does not absorb enough heat before nightfall to experience chemical changes and degraded performance. I don't have a recommendation. Just a lot of information. I went with a combo ceramic face over poly backer. It will be fine for a few hits in Somalia 2.0 but after that I'm going to look a lot like an Afgani whose been fighting the last 20 years with no armor at all.

If you're overweight, like me, keep in mind what he said in the video. Your vital organs are still the same size. Some people are rich. Some people get issued gear. Start with a chest rig and 3-5 mags and a rifle and IFAK. Get training. Build out as funds allow. But bullets, bandaids, and training are worth more than gear. Especially fancy gear. Get super basic stuff. Use the hell out of it

Get a Chicom chest rig, run recycled Gatorade bottles out of a Jansport or Swissgear backpack, run irons on your rifle, get a set of snap caps and run thousands of dry fires. Get good with basic gear if you are not swimming in money.

Then you have the guys who bought “armor” from wish and run around with the same foam inserts in it thinking it makes them look like a door kicker

Oh yeah, I've seen that. My thought is you want to LARP go for it. I believe all citizens that can legally own gear and I don't mean their state says I mean, you don't have a felony or domestic charge." The states" shouldn't be able to violate the constitution. You should own gear and train at the highest level you can. You should own the best, most viable, and effective gear you can own. Essentially own the best gear you can, save up, dont go into debt and be a red blooded American protector of innocence

These guys who think they are going to “CQB” if SHTF, are living in a fairytale world. There will likely be no need to clear a room or building unless a loved one is inside, otherwise, don’t do it
