This was an interesting experience for me. I went into this agreeing with Crito, thinking that Athens had no right to withhold Socrates' wisdom from the world for such charges as they did. I was thinking that if I were Crito I would have hired somebody to kidnap Socrates from prison against his will and suffer whatever punishment was the result. Socrates managed to persuade me to his opinion.

I have to make an essay about platos crito, it's an argumentative, and I have to point out inconsistency and such, does any one have any suggestions to kind of help me out? it is about 1,000-1,200 words.

I'm sure that your essay is finished by now. It seems to me that the chief inconsistency is that if Socrates' were to wield his influence to get released from prison, then he would be validating the proceedings against him, cf. Plato's "Apology" : “Ignoble, fellow, if you suppose that a man who is of even a little benefit should take into account the danger of living or dying, but 28b not rather consider this alone whenever he acts: whether his actions are just or unjust, and the deeds of a good man or a bad." He goes on to invoke The Iliad (it is worthwhile to note that the real Socrates was said to have been a capable soldier). "[Achilles, presumably] rather than endure anything shameful, he despised danger so much that when his mother (a goddess) spoke to him as he was eager to kill Hector-something like this, as I suppose: ‘Son, if you avenge the murder of your comrade Patroclus and kill Hector, you yourself will die; for straightway,’ she says, ‘after Hector, your fate is ready at hand’-he, upon hearing this, belittled death and danger, fearing much more to live as a bad man and not to avenge his friends. d ‘Straightway,’ he says, ‘may I die, after I inflict a penalty on the doer of injustice, so that I do not stay here ridiculous beside the curved ships, a burden on the land.’ I hope that helps. Also, it's hard to refuse acknowledgement of the majority if you show them that their punishment has gotten to you. Crito seems to be almost as craven as those who made the original arguments against his friend. Maybe, if we're trying to go deeper, there's another inconsistency in that disobeying an unjust law causes harm, so justice comes in following injustice. More of a paradox than an inconsistency perhaps.
