"Deliberately" is not the right word. It implies that there was some time taken to think about and possibly plan and act. Barnes was in the middle of a fight for his life, in the dark, and Taylor grabbed his arm and pulled him from behind. I can easily see how any person could be so preoccupied with violence that they attack anyone that comes into their field of view, in a circumstance like that. I am not saying Barnes deserved to live, I am just saying he might have not really wanted to kill Taylor, even though he tried to. Just sayin... and stuff

I first saw this in a movie theater, shortly after it was released, I was really taken back. When the movie was over, and the lights went on, a man in the audience was sobbing uncontrollably, and his wife was trying to console him. I'm not old enough to have served in that horrible war, but I remember the guys from the neighborhood who did. I later worked as a police officer. Almost all of the older guys in my precinct served in Vietnam. I tried not to ask questions, but when you a riding with a guy for 8 plus hours, it would eventually come up. I am truly in awe of these men, and feel for the issues they have suffered through.

If it were really about avoiding suspicion, then Taylor should have stabbed Barnes with the bayonet instead of shooting him. Rifles are loud, and if someone was firing off a rifle when everything had already gone quiet -- like everything was quiet when Taylor finally shot Barnes -- then it probably would have gotten some unwanted attention from someone. However, I don't think it was really about that. I think it was more about drawing parallels between what Barnes did to Elias and what Taylor was now doing to Barnes, and showing that Taylor -- in spite of how much he hated Barnes -- was in danger of becoming like him.

As Oliver Stone himself noted, friendly fire is highly known about in the military. It happens more than the military would like known. Stone himself estimated 10%-20% of all battlefield casualties are friendly fire and not just small arms. Also, artillery and air support. In a battle that large, they aren't going to do a CSI investigation. Action report: "died of small arms fire while engaging the enemy."

Because directors today are lazy. They try and put a whole lot of fluff (very famous actors, a lot of effects, high action scenes, and almost always a ‘happy’ ending) and pretend like that makes a good movie and not an actually good and/or realistic plot. They don’t try as hard as they used to because they don’t want to and feel like they know how to avoid it.

I think its different if you saw Platoon on the big screen when it first came out. Being in the Marines at that time I could understand how the lack of sleep, exhaustion, oppressive heat, lack of food, despair , hopelessness and the constant threat of death leaves you on the brink of a nervous breakdown. How if leadership encourages inhumanity to man the futility in opposing that becomes as Taylor opines to King. I wasn't really judgmental on anyone I just understood if you put men with no moral compass in brutal situations where they are forced to kill other men in the name of whatever-ism nothing good but evil will result. That is probably why I admire Pacifists such as the Quakers and Amish.

I feel like Barnes was so sadistic because, he had been in war and had been fighting to the point where he started to not fear, and not be afraid of dying. And, I feel like the amount of war and PTSD that Barnes suffered caused him to go sadistic and go crazy. In the village scene when Barnes shoots that woman, that was the point where he went insane. And when he killed Elias, without hesitating, bc he knew that Elias was gonna rat him and half the Platoon that was on Barnes’ side out for what happened at the village. And when Taylor confronted him with the NVA rifle, he knew that he was gonna kill him and he wasn’t afraid, so he said “do it” and he didn’t seem afraid or petrified, he seemed like he was wanting it. When Taylor picked up that AKM, he checked to see if there was a round chambered. Nice little detail, but I've heard that by that point in the filming, the actors were doing things like this without having to be prompted.

Taylor was full of rage yet still smart up enough to grab the AK to frag Barnes with.

Barnes deserved friendly fire by Taylor in massive retaliation, he had it coming, it was revenge for Elias.
