Little piece of advice, don’t go crazy on the leg extension machine. The open chain nature of the exercise mixed with very heavy weight has been theorized to create a lot of sheeting forces in the knee. It’s actually been studied fairly extensively and it’s been known as one of the exercises to cause the most damage to a knee. They’re not bad at very low weights or as rehab exercises with a lower load, but once you start getting into big boy weight it can deteriorate your knee health excessively. Just a thing to note

@@Banana-jb2hf it’s funny, my trainer had me doing these when I was rehabbing my ACL but for some reason they always causes me a ton of discomfort even at low weight. It wasn’t until a year or two later when I got into my athletic training program in college that we were talking in our biomechanics and lower body rehab classes that the research suggested those types of open chains exercises could be so detrimental. It makes me wonder if I could have optimized my rehab even more at the time.

I also agree, I always thought that I was the only one who looks down on leg presses. You are right, most people who leg press seem to only do it because you can load a lot of plates on there making people think that you're a badass. You're really only lifting about half of the actual weight because it's at about a 45-degree angle.

I second this. Stopped doing leg presses a long time ago. Heavy, high reps squats made my quads explode. Thanks Tom. I litteraly do 3 sets of 15-30 reps squats, starting with the heaviest weight and building down. Then do hack squats with a low weight, just to go really deep and then finish off with 2 drop sets of leg extensions.

@@santiiiiiiiiii7 in my experience, heavy weight high reps will leave me paralyzed lol. It feels like i can never recover from it. I've been doing well with sets of 5 and three because i can do it multiple times per week. If i ever improve my sleep/nutrition I'm going to try high weight high reps.

@@abyss7082 sure it does. 70 percent of my max for twenty would be pretty heavy. Also, i could go to failure at around 12 reps and take 10 seconds betweent reps to force 20. Shit sucks

That's why tom platz say so.. ronnie could do 8, 10 or more reps in a 2 thousand pounds leg press, but ronnie couldn't even think about lifting half of this weight in a squat or other exercise..

Leg press is actually really good when you use correct weight and control the eccentric motion. Plus get a deep stretch an pause at the bottom.

A friend of mine could not squat because of arthritis in his knees. But you know what he has an incredible set of legs. How did he do that? LEG PRESSES with very heavy weights and varying foot positions. I don’t think It was a waste of time for him at all. I never quite understood Toms argument against this particular movement. He never seems to explain WHY he feels they are inferior just that they are. I mean you are definitely using your quadriceps muscles and if you overload them they will grow like any other muscle. Why wouldn’t they?

Yesterday I did leg press for the first time in years, and got a pump unlike anything I've felt during any squat variation I've done. Not having access to a hack squat makes for long and intense sets on the leg press instead. And 4-5 sets until failure on the leg extension afterwards made me whimper xD
