the Galway obsession with extremely forced low notes was always an evil to his playing, and any traverso flute isn't made physically to have a linear sound power output on its lowest and highest pitches.Pushing to hard just makes it get less and less fundamental tone and more and more just harmonics, which isn't beautiful and sounds squeezed out.Try on a pipe organ to rise the wind pressure:you first get higher pitch and more fundamental, then the fundamental disapperas gradually for mostly the first and second harmonic(overblowing).It is exactly the same on the flute.Reed instruments can live with an overpression, they even like it .Underpressure however kills their sound, they even shut to silence under a certain pressure.We can accept the natural physical sound limits to the flute, and composers didi it naturally and never thought a low C or B would have to be able to keep in control an orchestra or a piano on fortissimo

Hahaha, I wouldn't go as far as "evil" but I sure am enjoying exploring this new way of letting the flute speak in a much more relaxed way. :) I feel I get more of the true voice of the flute, and it's so so lovely and fun!

@@JustAnotherFlutist absolutely correct , the limits of the flute are at the same time its strongest points, and the orchestra, the piano accompanist or whatever else happens around has to adapt to the flute's spectrum and possibilities. A violonist alway would dream to have the fundamentals of a fat scaled organ bass, the flutist wants this thin tube to have mega sound and linera output, the horn player wants to be able to play pppp and every pianist dreams from 100 organ stops , but just has a hammer on a string.As soon as we love and exploit naturally every instrument, we are close to perfection, to ITS perfection.Like with beautiful Classic Cars(I am a collector.....): drive it like they were thought, and they are sublime, drive them like a modern car and they are dreadful :-)

I love the way you expressed this. It's so true! Playing the flute in this manner is allowing me to enjoy the flute for what IT is good at, not what I can MAKE it do. :)

@@JustAnotherFlutist I went off on a jaunt to learn to play trumpet and found when I brought back that relaxedness that you need for the low notes on the trumpet to the flute, the dropping of the jaw just gave such vibrant low register on the flute. At the same time applying how you play the high register on the flute really helps the trumpet but seems to be counter-intuitive to how the high notes are taught on the trumpet. It really made me think about how much technique we probably understand "wrong" for our primary instrument.
