A couple of things I'd add. Firstly, it is essential that you are PHYSICALLY present in all areas of your designated duty area. If you have a school oval, you can't just stand in the middle and look around. In order to properly assess that you have fulfilled your duty of care, you must be able to prove that you were in the areas in which you are supposed to perform your duty. We had a court case that involved a student being injured, and our school had to prove that the very specific area she was injured in was consistently monitored (which, at the time, it wasn't, as the duty area was split into a canteen and outdoor area). The circumstances where unavoidable (we literally could not stop the student being injured). However, we had to prove that sufficient measure was taken so that the occurrence of the injury was not due to the duty arrangement. Secondly, if you are required to supervise outside the school grounds (such as supervising the bus stops outside the school), you need to be extra vigilant. You are the only school representative that the students have immediate contact with, and you are probably on your own. As you are outside of school grounds, your authority is much more ambiguous, as is your access to the normal processes and support. Have a phone on you, and know when and how to call emergency services on your own initiative. I was once involved in a gang fight where a student was jumped by half a dozen youths which spilled into a local shop, and I was in the middle of it all. Called police first, then the school. While the situation was handled correctly, it was very clear that there were no standing operating procedures for this specific duty and it relied on "common sense".

Wow what an intense situation to be in! I'm glad you were able to call for assistance. Thank you for adding those points about bus duty, I forgot to put that in my notes as my current school only has a few students that catch a bus. My last school was much different and I totally forgot to add my tips for that! Maybe another video for monitoring kids outside school grounds 👍 thanks for the important information 🍎

Great tips. When talking to staff about outside supervision I always emphasized the importance of moving around, not staying in one place. Children who want to chat with you need to understand that you have to walk and talk. I agree with you that it can make a huge difference if the classroom teacher is made aware of an issue that might spill over into the classroom especially if it is already in process of being dealt with or has been dealt with. Thank you for your mention of role modelling both through following school rules in regards to wearing a hat etc. and in picking up rubbish. I can not agree with you more that we cannot tell students that they must follow a rule that staff ignore. I have always made it a practice to clean up with children or model picking up rubbish in the hallway or classroom, the impact doing so on the mind set of students can not be under estimated. Thank you for another great video. :)

At my school it was called ‘outside teaching’ for a long time. The theory was that we should still be actively teaching cooperative skills whilst out there with the kids. The new principal changed it back to yard duty.

My second ever PGD a year 7 managed to headbutt a cement landing for the fire stairs next to the library. split right along his hairline. Headwound = lots of blood, so he freaked out. welcome to your new career! Right next to my Staff room & DP was in their chatting, so all the steps went well 2 weeks later I round the corner and a yr 12 is sitting in almost the same spot with a smashed nose and blood & I think "Oh no, Not again!" but it was the drama students filming a horror movie with wounds and prosthetics.
