Thank you for this video and your dedication to teaching. I am a veteran teacher of over 10 years Kindergarten and 1st grade. I have had collab classes in the past and have had one or two students with an autism spectrum diagnosis, but this year I will have FIVE! I will have twenty students total and am trying to do my best to prep for what’s coming, but I am concerned about limiting disruptions to the learning environment. The exceptional education teacher(s) at my school push in to the classsroom at various parts of the day, but it’s not all the time. I feel like I am going to have to have at least one person (if not more) in there to constantly hand hold and re-direct. The stress of having to do this by myself is already daunting.

Great review, very complete if you are a student. I'd just change the name to "review for students". As a teacher we might need other functions like zoom meetings for example... 😔 Which is what I needed to know

Yes once you have synced you can open on your other platforms. You just need to click open other notebooks and it should be in your recent files. I personally prefer the 2016 version but thats on the PC, Im not sure what version it would be for mac

VERY important feedback: Just delete the page versions BEFORE you make your templates available as download, cause 1) everybody has access to the page versions with VERY sensitive information 2) the template is VERY big (+1GB). Without the page versions it will be small...

Last Thursday my son is 8 years old he had the Meltdown as you speak of at school but we had to pick him up he physically harmed another student and proceeded to tear up the classroom put all the desks over except for his friends desk and then was told that he had to be restrained by five people grown adults that doesn't sit well with me because you can hold him down and tickle him and he goes crazy I had a meeting today with the IEP team Special Education team principal assistant principal so on and so on they've decided to switch his homeroom and to do half days and we have to try this for 30 days and then reconvene what is your opinion on seclusion and or restraints during these meltdowns mind you the teacher had evacuated the classroom already and then they proceeded to hold him down
@talkinchalk
@talkinchalk 9 ай бұрын
Restrictive practices are not allowed in my school system. The only time you would hold a child is if they were seriously harming themselves. Ruining the classroom is not a reason to hold them down so this is highly concerning to hear. The part-time attendance plan can be highly successful but 30 days is also a long time. At my school we check-in weekly and review to see if part-time plans should be extended based on how the student is doing. I hope things improve for your son.

I just came across your channel, the first part of this video it got me teared up. My daughter also is on spectrum level 2 and without her wonderful preschool teachers and therapists she wouldn’t be thriving and progressing so well. Thank you to all the teachers who are so patient and understanding of our ND children. shes starting kindy next year jn a support unit and my level of anxiety is rocketing. her school isnt allowing therapists to come in so i know its going to be tough for me losing oursupport system.

Big fan of your content ❤ what kind of adjustments work for a 5 year old kindy boy in mainstream? He says some words and likes to have a wander while classmates are listening to teacher, enjoys personal interest activities like word puzzles when classmates, doing handwriting. Can be triggered with sensory overload but behaves well at home but doesn’t always listen to teachers. What is your expectation for a child like this?
@talkinchalk
@talkinchalk 11 ай бұрын
I would recommend a visual timetable that builds in movement breaks. So for example, first do reading, then do spelling and then have a movement break. Using pictures for a timetable. Headphones might be helpful when the room is a bit noisy. And definitely visual cards to help when overloaded with break choices such as a calm space.

@@talkinchalk thank so much. Is there any training for teachers to learn this (his teachers look they’ve recently graduated so lacking these skills and experience). Terrific walkthrough! I've been using DnD in the classroom for a few years now and it is definitely high on the engagement factor. When you got to where you were managing the 18 characters, did you run full classroom sessions or did you form small groups for the students to be a part of a party? I've tried both and there have been pros and cons each way.

I wanted to comment to say it's wonderful to hear a teacher that has such a great understanding of kids with Autism in the classroom. It's really sadly not that common from my experience. I have two girls with Autism that are 14 and almost 16. School has been a huge challenge for us over the years. This is why I am passionate about being a special education teacher myself. I have recently gone back to school for this. The one feedback I have is that I wish you could have touched more on the misconception that being verbal means you're higher functioning, and being nonverbal means you're low functioning. As you have said, "Autism looks different for each person." They can be verbal but can't toliet or shower themselves and be really good at math or art. Or they could be nonverbal but can dress themselves and work a job, but needs help with cutting their food or riding a bike. I wish more people would understand this. Because my girls are considered verbal, there has been so much misjudgment that they shouldn't need supports a nonverbal kid gets. So much more expectations are put on verbal autistic kids, which they might be low functioning in that area, which unfortunately causes more stress and anxiety for the child. More aware is definitely needed amongst every profession even doctors and therapists who work in the field.
