Scott's Bass Lessons

Күн бұрын

Playing chords on bass can be tricky! In fact right from the start we're at a disadvantage simply because of the low register of the bass.
That said, you can certainly play chords on the bass - and, it can sound VERY cool!
In this lesson I'm going to teach you about voice leading - what it is, how it can help you gain more freedom on the fretboard, and why we need to start thinking like piano players!
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

I'm glad you mentioned Ted Greene at the end my friend, I was about to call you out. Reminds me of the cycle of 4th lessons Ted did in his book 'Chord Chemistry' decades ago.One of the best books ever, all written in shorthand and Steve Vai himself mentioned it as a major influence.Good lesson, thanks for posting.

Very helpful! On contrary to the complaints I felt like the 'talking' helped me understand how you chose your notes better and imo is a huge part in bass. Thanks!

Just to clarify, you need the 5th in a m7b5 to define the chord as a m7b5 chord. Otherwise it sounds like a m7 chord

Technically your observation is correct, however, you don't need to play all the notes all the time. If you consider the other musicians will be playing some of the notes you miss then over all you will still have to correct sound for any chord. He uses the same voicing without the 5th on the min7 and min7b5 and they both have the correct function and sound within the context of the sequence he plays.

I still don't get though why half of the time he is not playing the root notes of the chords... as a bassist I'd imagine that playing the root of the chords at the "low end of the spectrum" is a relatively important thing to do.. think about it, if a piano player is playing lets say a Gm7 chord, and the lowest note he is playing is a Bb, than it will sound like he is playing a Gm7/Bb = first inversion of the chord = Gm7 6/5 (quin-sext-achord in classical terms...) = etc... my point is, that if one instrument is playing a chord and the lowest note he is playing is not the fundamental root than the chord he is playing sound exactly like an inversion. now what's the difference between one instrument and one band or one orchestra for that matter? if everybody is playing a chord and the lowest note that someone is playing is not the root, the whole band sounds like it is playing together an inversion. now usually the lowest instrument in a band is the bass. if the bass isn't playing the root than the whole band is practically playing an inversion of the chord and not the said chord itself. someone care to explain why this would not be the case? I sincerely want to learn the reason for this, and therefore the reason why Scott is playing inversions half of the time instead of the chords non inverted (like the chords of the actual standard "autumn leaves".... thanks in advance to any responders. have a great day everyone!

Hard to see what frets he's playing he's always pushing down all 4 fingers even though its only three notes, at some point it looks like index and middle are on the same string, it's probably the glove also, could someone tell me the patterns Like "index on 15th fret on the a string" etc. for those chords please

Uncle Phil It's explained on his website. He has a neurological condition called Focal Dystonia. His hands were severely affected by this. The glove acts as a sensory trick, that allows him to continue to play.
