Here’s my suggestion. Just put a little water in the tub. Let him get used to that and gradually add water letting him get used to each new level. He clearly doesn’t understand he can float. So when he sees deep water he panics.

That's what I was thinking, he can get in the little plastic dish pan well enough. Yeah, it takes a world to raise an otter. It's funny, I've never seen one of these in life, but I'm watching all these updates. The otter really seems like a hunter, stalking and biting everything. HM, maybe if one sat in the tub, he could get in the water a little, then climb up on you if he doesn't like it. Something like a bathtub toy!!!!

He's scared that he can't get out. Try making a plastic ramp with a rubber mat inside the tub so he can get up and out of the water. Once it gets too deep, he has a really hard time getting up and over the edge and he only feels comfortable with somewhere to jump over the edge from. I think maybe this fear stems from when he was put in there in shallow water alone before (I know you were next to the tub but he started to panic a bit before you took him out). He'll likely need extra assurance in that area before he starts to feel comfortable and safe again.
@bingobelle9355 жыл бұрын
We will try to get a wider pool but not that deep so that he cat get in and out by himself.
@BlueEternities5 жыл бұрын
I think he'd be more than happy in the tub if he had some sort of ramp to get himself out. I was thinking if you just have a long piece of plastic and rubber cement a layer of rubber onto it and put it in the tub at an angle, I bet he'd love that. That way, he can ease himself into the deep water without the fear of getting stuck in there. It would definitely be cheaper too. = ) Really love watching your videos by the way. He's such a playful, happy, cutie.

Maybe try putting a towel on the edge of the tub and drape it over both sides so hes not slipping when he tries to climb out. That may be part of his panic that he thinks he cant escape when he wants. Also you might try sitting down in there with him. Bu

There's a YT vid titled "Animals Being Jerks". It includes a scene involving a reluctant otter pup being forced into the water by its mother. Once in, though, the pup goes to town. Perhaps, in general, otter pups are initially fearful and must be dumped in?

All these people speculating....watch how otter parents do it in the wild. They don’t baby them. They hold them with their mouths and the babies have no choice. Yes the babies protest but the parents don’t let them away with anything. It’s essential for their survival they learn to swim. Although it’s not essential for Bingos survival it’s good for his physical and mental well-being to be in the water.

Kerry Mulholland wild otters hug their babies in the water and serve as an example of that there is nothing to fear if they do like the parent. They are taught to float with their parent right next to them, not outside of the body of water.
@barbie51545 жыл бұрын
Yup, but they are firmly grabbed by their necks and close to the mother's body. Humans are not fit to teach them how. In conservationist parks biologist use a subtitute mother... and even this is not easy to do. Not all otters accept pups that aren't their own and they need many tries. I'm sorry, but I don't think forcing him would do any good to your relationship with your pet.

Bingo's mummy and daddy are assholes for keeping a wild animal as a pet. Dogs and cats have been bred over many thousands of years to be domesticated animals. Otters have not. If he became an orphan, he should have been taken to a sanctuary/refuge and then released back into the wild. Not taken to some damn apartment in downtown Tokyo. Or wherever they live.

In the little tub, He can touch the bottom and get out. In the big tub if its not full he can't get out. If its full he can't touch the bottom. If you watch river otters in the wild unless they are hunting fish they are playing in and out of the water in the shallows.

@charylliss14725 жыл бұрын
MarcoM512 he is afraid for some reason. You can see by the way he plays in the little blue tub he has the otter instinct for water play. He shows many of the otter behaviors in water and is fine when the blue pan is being held for him in the tub. Maybe a type of ramp for him to be able to get out of the tub with that and patience introducing him into the big tub with the little blue one, I think he will eventually come to love being in the tub.

From now on, make sure that his little blue swimming area is _always_ in the tub. Don't push his challenge line, just allow him to start associating the tub with fun time instead of with fear. The problem is that he's now conditioned to feel fear of the tub. Over the next few weeks, slowly break that conditioning.

@schloops84735 жыл бұрын
"you could try and put a platform in the middle of the tub that he can get on"... that is actually a great idea... it'll need to be steady and allow him to get out of the bath altogether as Bingo always makes sure he has an exit and will use it regularly to make sure he is safe. I believe it's the absence of an exit on the first try inside the bath that "traumatized" him. This being said, Bingo is a ton more adorable than he is courageous :D.
@elfiefromangelcity61425 жыл бұрын
River otters spend their early life on land. They have to build confidence, and learn how to swim, and build up their lung capacity. They don't start out swimming in the deep parts of the river. They play on the edges and gradually go deeper with age. Dunking him in a full bathtub like the beginning without an exit he can use so he can leave when he feels he needs to was scary for him. The second half of the video was done much better. It wasn't too deep, and he had an exit which made for a more positive learning experience.

Bingo doesn't like not being able to see over the sides of the tub. He feels like he is in a hole. In nature, he could surface and look around to see if he is safe. If he surfaces and all he sees are the walls of the tub, he feels trapped. That's why when you hold him in the blue tub near the top of the water, he can see out of the big tub and, therefore, he feels safer.

He is probably not sure how deep the bath tub is, bc there is no contrast for him. Just put a colored rubber mat (anti-slip-mat) on the ground of your tub, so he'll probably be able to see how deep the water is and feel much saver. I mean for human eyes its obvious the check the water deeth or check the dimensions of your tub. Try it out, maybe its the key for tiny Bingo.
