Plays and Strategies to Score vs 1-3-1 Zone

The 1-3-1 Zone is one of the more uncommon zones teams run, and it can create huge problems for an offense. Both Virginia & Creighton struggled in the NCAA Tournament against their lower-seeded opponent when they ran this zone.
In this video, we breakdown 4 different areas to attack when facing a 1-3-1 Zone. There are a few scripted plays that can be run to get open shots, but the focus of this video is to teach how to use principles to create open shots.
The 4 areas are; 1. Corner Touches, 2. Driving Gaps, 3. Room Touches, 4. High-Post Touches

Oklahoma State is NOT running a 2-3 Zone there. THAT is a 1-1-3 sometimes known as the Amoeba Defense. I was Coaching a team KNOWN for the 1-3-1 and a Top Defense in our State every year. Last year we added The Amoeba to continue to give the 1-3-1 LOOK in a totally different and more aggressive Defense. You can tell it is the Amoeba because the Top 2 Defenders start in a Front that looks like a 2-3 Zone.. then they SPLIT with 1 becoming the UP Gaurd and the other becoming the Back Guard. And there are ways to rotate who is the Up and who is the Back, so they are interchangeable BUT only 1 of the Up and 1 is the Back at any 1 time. The other tell is how the Back 3 Rotate. On the pass to the Wing at the Free Throw Line Extended the Ballside Forward covers the Wing and Center Guard the Post and Weakside Forward becomes the Hoop Man guarding the back of the Basket. Then when the ball goes to the Corner the Center sprints to cover the corner. And either the Hoop Man or Up Forward rotate to become the Post Man and the other is the Hoop Man. It depends on if your team wants to use the LONG SWITCH or the SHORT SWITCH. The distance is based on where the Up Man will rotate to.. the Long Switch makes him the Hoop Man. Short Switch makes him the Post Man. It is a hard Defense to Install if your players are not already ELITE ZONE DEFENDERS. Our team was already ELITE i the 1-3-1 and a Trapping 2-3. SO they already understood everything you need to know to be GREAT at Zone Defense. So they only had to learn the Funky Rotations of the Amoeba. It makes ZERO SENSE to Players when you first start implementing it. We actually brought in an EXPERT in the Amoeba to install it to make sure WE didn;t mess up the Instruction and did not use it in games until January to be sure we knew it 100%.

Have you either of you seen Greg Kampe's current zone defense at Oakland University (Horizon League)? I mention that because when I watched them in person play Michigan State a few days ago, their rotations were exceptionally "funky". That full game is on KZfaq under Michigan State vs. Oakland 2013.12.18. I think there may have been some customization of it specifically for MSU with extra eyes (4 sets according to Kampe) on Tyson Walker with almost no attention paid to MSU's 5 men (Sissoko and Cooper). MSU slowly began to figure it out and probably won the game by getting 3-4 transition buckets to end the first half before Oakland could convert/set it. I wasn't what I'd call gimmicky, but it was and wasn't a traditional 1-3-1 and both was and wasn't a 2-3. There were elements of both and some "planned haphazardness" if that's a thing. I no longer coach after 29 years. Just curious. It tested MSU's decision making all night.

@@superquadlh I haven't seen it. But it could be the 1-1-3. Try watching an Old Film of Jerry Tarkanian's UNLV teams at their PEAK. They were running it. Maybe you can confirm from watching that if they were the same.
