For all of you who are either standing at the fork in the road OR are programming already but curious about what's on the other side of the fence, here is a VERY high-level overview of the differences between the two career paths.

While most of what you have said is true there are a lot of instances where the two meet. We design systems from instrumentation and up. My engineers can program the PLCS, touch panels, SCADA HMIs with SQL databases and generate reports using SAP. Not to mention on larger systems one has PLCs and SCADA machines communicating via radio and ethernet networks. Now, it does take time and a fair amount cross training before a single engineer can do it all. I usually hire either control or electrical engineers with CS background either in college or work experience.

Hello Paul, so what really are the opportunities of working as a PLC programmer but without change of residence? I'm talking about the work in a hybrid or maybe on a remote modality

I worked remotely from Bolivia programming PLCs for years before I retired. For myself, opportunities weren't hard to come by. Other people's experience may vary...

@@PaulLynn Had you been working with companies abroad or on your own? Do you have any advice on some good companies to look for? I would appreciate a video of your experience this way as the feeling about it is that, as you said in your video, one has to move to where the manufacturing is actually happening.

@@hectorarturopachecosolis5885 Well, in my career videos, I do talk about working remotely and how to find work. There are 30-something videos of my experience right there. I could tell you some of the companies I worked remotely with ten years ago before I retired, but half of them don't even exist anymore, so I'm not sure that would be much help.

I am still on the first parts of your PLC courses, on Udemy. I have bought some Python programming courses as well, that i want to do later on. (And have some C courses on my wishlist for even later than that 😅) Im thinking about either getting the rest of your courses on PLC Dojo afterwards, or if the Python courses would be ve better to do first? Im doing it mainly for the interest in the CS programming skills, and to become more well rounded overall.

If computer programming is your main objective, my courses really don't fit into the equation at all. They're just going to slow you down!

@@PaulLynn My interest is in PLC programming, don't get me wrong. But would it not make sense to build on top of it with a programming language or two as well? I have heard from other sources that it can be very useful to do that, since automation is becoming more integrated within everything (IIoT, industry 4.0, etc.). What is your opinion on that?

@@Gilgork Oh, yeah, it's DEFINITELY a nice complement. Absolutely. But it's just a matter of deciding (for 100% certain) which direction you want to go. If it's PLC, learn that first. If it's CS, learn that exclusively. There are no wrong answers here. 😉

@@PaulLynn Good to know, that confirms that I'm going in the right direction 🙂 Thanks for answering my questions.
