Short Plott Hound description:
The Plott Hound is a medium-sized, powerful, muscular dog. Their height should be between 20-28 inches which is 50-71 cm and they should weigh between 40-60 pounds which is 18-27 kg. The females are naturally little bit smaller than males.
Plotts are hunters by heart and they have extremely strong hunting instinct. If they smell something interesting, they will most likely follow the scent no matter what. That is why it is advised to keep your Plott on leash outside and you should have good fence around your yard.

Kona was rescued two years ago from a rescue in South Carolina. The absolute best dog we could have asked for. She is a mix of Plott, Black Lab and Aussie Shepherd .

We got a rescue Plott hound from a shelter in Texas and shipped here to Oregon. We love her. She can run seems like 40 MPH, and jump very high, she can glide over a 4 foot tall fence effortlessly. She does like to chase but the only thing I saw her get was a skunk, and that was a lesson for her, I'm sure.

@@Rocadog Thank you. She was difficult at first and even after a couple years STILL has some trust issues. But anyway I first was figuring she was probably part greyhound and part boxer... but found out it was a Plott hound using Google Lens (image recognition apps are well trained with dog & cat breeds). Some research said this breed has excellent night vision. That made sense as to why she is the only dog I ever had that has purple eye shine reflecting back at me in the dark when I'm wearing a LED headlight.

My Plott Hound Harley is 14 now. He's totally fearless. and still full of energy. I think our vet told us that since his resting heart rate is so high, he's going to live forever. Lol

We adopted a Plott Hound without knowing the temperment of the breed many years ago. I would not hesitate to get another. A very powerful breed (think linebacker), he was loyal and was very patient with our kids. He loved his belly rubs, naps and food! He was definitely a hunter though. Would watch our cat for hours - would NOT recommend Plotts in a home with cats, bunnies, etc. He did have separation anxiety from being overly caged as a pup and was very destructive when we left the house. We tried everything and several thousand dollars later, discovered a dog door with a fenced yard was the key. As long as he could go out at will, he was at peace! He was a companion dog for us, but definitely needed to explore the outdoors regularly. He was a VERY hearty breed and could easily live outside in appropriate weather. RIP buddy, I miss you!!

I recently rescued a Plott at 3-4 months old, now going on 6. Did not know what type breed she was, but it was love at first sight. She is a handful and at present she has beach access and lots of interaction with other dogs her age. She is very sociable, loves children and she gets along with every other dog she meets. Yesterday she got to run, swim and play with an18 month old neutered male Plott/Pitbull. What a fantastic sight they were as they raced across the massive lawn at the beachpark. Wish I’d have videoed it! I would appreciate advice anyone may have to offer. I’ve always had dogs from small to large lab/pits. I learned she was a Plott from a fellow who happened to have two of them. So I took to the Internet to Learn about them- so here I am.

Adopted our Plott about 10 years ago. Very loving and chill temperament. Unsure if she was abused, was told her previous owners had another dog that tore into her and they wound up getting rid of her instead. She's very socially withdrawn compared to our rambunctious black lab lol, but she's always been like my shadow.

We just rescued our 2nd dog and we believe he is a Plott Hound. He's slightly on the smaller side but aside from that this description fits the bill. He's adventurous and LOVES our morning runs & weekly hikes in the NC Mountains. The moment he steps outside he's onto something and needs to explore so we bought a 30' leash to give him the freedom to do so. Training him has been more of a challenge when it comes to keeping his attention but he's a quick learner and is eager to please if it means he gets what he wants (sitting for food etc). He's quickly become part of our pack and is the perfect addition to our family.

Adopted our Plott Hound 3 years ago from a 2-day kill shelter in North Carolina. Our “Boomer” is the sweetest dog ever. It’s true very loyal, and protective. But a cream puff to strangers. He isn’t stopping a burglar....LOL. Highly recommend this breed

I rescued a Plott 5 years ago. He had parvo when he was born, and the pound spent a lot of money saving his life. He had been adopted and returned to the pound several times before I found him. Don't know why anyone would think of my lovely best friend as garbage. A beautiful red brindle, and not overweight at 120 pounds. I guess I got a big one! He's a fantastic hunter and companion, and he is a part of the family -- which includes a cat and another dog. They all hunt together.

We never knew what breed our rescue dog was until I saw this! She was about a year old when we got her, our kids grew up with her, and she was alive and healthy for almost 15 years! She was the best dog ever - we have 3 dogs now, and there is nothing that compares to our Sally! We miss her dearly!

A plott hound was dropped off near our house and we found him on our porch, ribs showing. Fed him, kept him, got his chip changed, and hes been the best dog ever for the past 5 years.

Plotts are the best dog man can own. My Bonnie will run along with me on my ebike at a constant 25mph for a long time,. Its crazy the energy she has, she can jump a 6 foot fence like a deer.

I raised and hunted with Plotts for 40 years on about every kind of game animal in the Appalachian Mountains and they also make excellent turkey dogs . I could tell you hours of Plott stories. I sent dogs from coast to coast and border to border to many happy hunters and to people as companion and family dogs . They are a very versatile breed. Take the word of an old Mountaineer on that. My bloodlines came from Dale Brandenberger Plotts and West VIrginia Plotts ( Curtis Walker). Google either of those to see exelent example of Plotts in action.

They are very athletic, they had to be to be good hunters 👍 But they are also very strong

You’re not wrong. My plott is almost 3 now and also extremely lean. He seriously cannot build fat! He has constant access to food and eats about 50lbs of premium kibble each month. Even spoiling him by greasing his kibble doesn’t fatten him up. Their metabolism is just too fast to build fat, which is normal for a hound.

We are adopted a dog 2 months ago. She is around a year old. I got a lot's of compliment how nice she is, so I typed tiger stripe dog in google...I never tought we have a plott hound. :) I still don't know she is mix or not but I don't mind, we live in Hungary and I never see a dog like Fanny (she). I try to learn now as much as I can, from this breed, I liked your video and I have to agree with you. All facts is true. :)

I had no idea what kind of dog I had for the 10 years I had her...I thought she was a lab pitbull mix, but after she passed away I realized I didn't want any other kind of breed but what she was because she was the best dog I've ever had. She was a great family dog, could walk off leash and not run, never had accidents in the house, and insanely smart. I would highly recommend a plott as a family dog.

I learned about this breed half hour ago from almost the exact same scenario. Thought mine was lab/pit. Lost her to cancer after 10 years and decided to do a bit more research to try and get the same breed again. Best dog ever.

We rescued a Plott Hound about 5 years ago! His name is Bruce. He got no attention when he was a pup and was left outside for weeks at a time with no food. Eventually one of the neighbors couldn't handle the mistreatment anymore so they took him and gave him to us! He needs a lot of attention and anyone who will pet him is his new best friend! He is very loud but at least no one will be lining up to rob us.

Adopted a 1.5 year old female 2.5 years ago. She is a brown brindle and weighs 45 lbs. She is a sweetheart and loves to retrieve tennis balls in and out of the water! Needs lots of walks! Very food motivated and loves to counter surf. Hopefully we can get some professional help to curb this behavior. Would not trade this loyal dog for $10,000,000- love her!

Mine gets into my kitchen cabinets. She has ruined the finish on several of them by scratching at them trying to get in. I have to keep the garbage up high (top of fridge) or locked up or she will get into it. She swims like a fish. Loves to fetch. Will sniff out anything. You can't hide stuff from her. She finds all the dead deer carcasses that the hunters leave. She really likes the legs for the bone marrow. She will eat baby rabbits for a snack. But she is the best dog ever. Well, I've had other best dogs ever too. She is 13 now and is finally slowing down.

We got a plott hound and even though he has chewed up at least 2,000$ worth of shoes and clothes he is the cutest and best thing ever. When we go out to shoot targets for fun the bad thing is that when you fire a bullet they run after where you were shooting. The reason for this is because they are adapted for hunting raccoons and they think that you are shooting raccoons

They are very similar to a mountain cur, I have a dog I believe is a mountain cur but don’t know for sure if his a plott mix or mountain mix.

Ive finally come to a conclusion that my dog is plott hound with some lab. She has all the characteristics of plott but has size added by the Lab. She is 87 lbs and 6 years old. Very vocal.

Anyone know anything about them having separation anxiety or barking/howling problems? It says they like always having a strong leader around.. if they were left alone for a few hours would that cause incessant barking/howling?

My Plott is extremely bonded to her family, when any one of us leaves the home, the family members who remain always note a change in her behavior. She is a little depressed and watches the windows waiting for her absent loved one to return; when they do it is as if the most wonderful thing just happened to Holly -kisses and "zoomies" galore. Sho does not vocalize when she's lonely, just acts visibly depressed. As a long time dog owner, I have never seen a more intelligent, loyal or family-oriented dog.

Something to keep in mind the can climb trees and fences we had a chain-link fence not good the male plotty would always be climbing the fence. He never went never left the property but he wouldn't stay fenced in.He was a trained to hunt but his sister wasn't so she wouldn't come back if call it would take hours to get her back if she got loose.

Mine gets a lot of compliments on her beauty. She is a red and very shiny. They say white anywhere but the chest is a fault, but I love the little white tips on her toes, tail tip, chest and tummy. For me it’s not a fault at all. So smart and smart Alec!

How many days old does a trail have to be for the Plott hound to smell it??

In my experience it matters more dog to dog some can pick up a track 2 days old at the most others dont have the nose for it and struggle after 5-6 hours depending on other conditions such as how wet the ground is

I have a plott/pitbull mix. She has the coloring and body shape of a plott, but the head and personality of a pit. She is definitely not independent like plotts though.

Best dog I ever had. Some guy was traveling through our town in the upper midwest; the mother dog either got away, or was dumped because she was pregnant. 4 of the pups looked Blue-tick, but the 5th looked like a Plott brindle, like his mother. He looked just like these dogs. He got away once, and was gone 6 months, leading an assortment of dogs in a pack. I finally trapped him one day, and got him fixed. That was the cure. Best hunting dog, best fighter/protector, and he even pulled my milk sled. I couldn't stop him from going into a badger den, and was horrified because badgers can kill. He came out all cut up, but he won. When he found something interesting out in the prairie, he'd come and grab my hand with his mouth, and lead me there. One day, I hope to see his angel in Heaven. I'll recognize him by his "Awww-ooooooo" howl.

I lived in Missouri for a year and once me and my ex broke up and took the dogs I started looking around and found my boy who was found alone on the side of the road at 3 months old. No idea where he came from. I got him from the shelter at 8 months old and terrified of almost everything. He’s 6 now and is well trained, smart, confident, loyal, loving, and the best dog I could ever ask for. Still has the energy of a puppy too!

How long did you have your Plott before training them to help with your disability? I also have a Malinois who is my personal service dog, but my partner and I adopted a Plott about 6 months ago now and he’s been quite hard to train to specifically focus on my partner.. any tips? :)

The chewing is anxiety it'll stop once it gets comfortable with the new surroundings. Oh and RUN your plott the build up of stored energy will cause chewing and digging

Also another fact is they are one of the few hounds that dont originate from english fox hounds, also they are bred to hunt bears. I have one at home and he is amazing

Do not own if you are new dog owner!!! Can't stress that enough! I yell at my dog once a day!!!! Especially if we are out. Use an ecollar! Use ecollar!!!!!!

first time dog owner and just staying on top of our plott hound is definitely a must but not unobtainable. high energy but once you keep them tired from exercise they do listen.

Plott hounds are eager to please? Umm...my Winston was not very eager to please. He was stubborn! But he was such a wonderful dog, almost human in his ability to understand emotions. I miss him so much.

Wrong. My AKC registered Plott Hound (Loki Cora of the Jasper) is very large. His best friend is a cat and is currently in the process of getting to be friends with a kitten from the front house that wants to hang in my zone. He does have white markings on his breast plate but he also has one white toe. He is a rescue that I adopted so there has been extra work, but he has caught on quickly on everything from sit to drop.
