The legend Rickson Gracie talks about the difference in cultures between the Japanese and Brazilians. We also dive into the critical aspect of learning for this white belt generation, and the JJGF purpose for the progress of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

That was the fastest 32 minutes of my life. I felt like I wanted it to go on another 3 hours! I also see you did a Gokor interview that I'll watch next. I would have sold my soul to see them fight. Sakuraba has developed a similar, almost mystical reputation in Brazil. He is very respected, and in a different way than Rickson. When he arrived in Los Angeles to graple Renzo.- The BJJ community showed up just get a glimpse of one of the gratest lutadors in history. when he entered the arena limping, and smoking everyone was stunned.Maia said 'hes the man. No one could touch him in his prime."

PlugOneTwo I respectfully disagree with this comment. When you have somebody like Rickson Gracie speaking, let him talk as much as he likes. The man is a legend and doesn't waste his words, so why would you want to add comments... I was actually thinking that I love your approach to this interview, you let him talk and gave him gentle direction when you wanted to steer the conversation a different way. Great interview with a legend.

Great interview. It would seem to me that any type of competition JJ is nearly mutually exclusive from combat JJ. And although reforming the rules may make the sport more exciting and slightly more realistic (to a real fight) its still a long way from a street situation. Certainly the mission of trying to get the JJ schools to refocus on the true meaning of JJ and its self defense applications in combat is a worthwhile endeavor. I just don't see a significant correlation in "that goal" versus modifying sport JJ current rules. After all, the over riding philosophical principle behind Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is "survival". Certainly that principle in no way fits into being successful in competitive JJ. I respect Rickson's opinion more than just about anyone in martial arts so I would appreciate anyone that has insightful feedback.

I struggle with his comments on cross academy training. "why should i give you my time and love"... you can keep the love but I will pay you thousands of dollars to show me the techniques. I played football for over 10 years and would play for different teams and representative areas in the same year. After years in BJJ there seems to be this fading idea of it being some sort of secret. It's a sport at the end of the day, and a academy is a business with customers. Sometimes I want to roll and train with my friends across town.

Rickson is spot on about stalling !!!! I think the exact same about mma now, more so the UFC !!!! the UFC does not show mma the way it was meant to be, it has turned into a joke to be honest. look at Miocic... beating hunt, he musta stalled a minimum of 20 times. I think he leaned on mark against he cage at the end of 1 round for about 15 seconds without even moving or trying to attack or advance positions. when people understand this they will notice it a lot more. stalling is not fighting. stop idolising guys who stall like gsp etc. these people exploit rules to win and do not win based on the actual FIGHT which is totally against the whole point of why mma fighting started. it makes me sick to see referee's allow guys to lay and not advance position or strike. the ufc has the KINGS of stalling. I feel like if I paid to watch that shit I would be sick to my stomach that I pay to be entertained and have to sit and watch a guy dry humping a leg. the fighters are PAID to entertain !!!! if they don't then they are basically sticking a middle finger up to anyone who does pay to watch it !!!!!

Main cultural difference between Japan and Brazil, in Japan, they respect the guy who's beating their guy, in Brazil, the brazilian team insults the opponent all fight long, just learn 3 words in portugese : "filho da puta", which mean "son of a bitch"... now, just watch any Gracie video, MMA, dojo challenges etc, and just count how many times you'll ear "filho da puta" by the brazilian camp...

+Debiruman1666 I agree it's a cultural thing and that japanese people tend to be way more respectful. But think about what master Rickson said, brazilians are very emotional people. If you're a fighter, you know that in a fight there are millions of emotions going through your heart, and millions of thoughts through your mind. It's normal to shout that kind of insult (and we have many more in portuguese, believe me). But in another environment, even a competitive one, brazilian tend to be polite as respectful too.

My prof, being the humble guy that he is says: "I've been lucky". I asked him about Rickson's ears and he says: "Hard to put pressure on Rickson".

I dont think his right. A person can study Bjj in the morning and sricking at night. That is what Wanderlie silva did, That is how they train in the Chute Boxe- Kicking ,punchung and later BJJ. Silva came out of there and was a great muay thai fighter-Knoxking out many of his rivals and a great Bjj fighter.

I like how he said the country have a big lack of education. Yeah , including him... The martial artist has to adapt to the martial art , not the opposite. It's not because you're brazilian that you have to forget respect and say that your challenger is a son of a b... , a motherf..r... One thing the Gracie will never understand : the practice of martial art teaches you to respect yourself , to respect others , including your challengers . It teaches you humility and kindness , 2 things that the Gracie absolutly don't know. All the asian real martial art master have those qualities. The Gracie are doing fight sports , not budo , not martial art. In their "method" , there is no education , no philosophy , no way (do) , nothing that could make you grow and become a better person , except if your basicaly a stupid punk thug. P.S: I WON T ANSWER ANY COMMENT LIKE : THE GRACIE WOULD KICK YOUR ASS ' , etc...

Great post man, I am 100% with you on this one. And it's sad because they could have brought so much more to the martial art rather than just winning some UFC/Pride fights and then make a fool of themselves by disrespecting, complaining about the referee's decisions, accusing their opponent of cheating, bending the rules to their own advantages...
