The biggest lesson I learned keeping Bees in a colder environment was how I dealt with their needs in early spring. It took sometime but maintaining the early brood nest momentum was big.

Good morning Ian. As always I enjoy watching your videos. Even for us who are in a completely different environment, your advice is always useful. Greetings from beautiful springtime Greece - Hellas!

In Calgary we had beautiful weather last weekend and started the week with 6 inches of snow. Definitely a slow start to the year.

It's a great idea to have control colonies and validate your methods 😊

Looking like you should have a great year with splits and honey production

Look at that weather. I don't have that in the middle of winter. I'm trapping pollen every chance I get to relieve the brood box. This weather.. there was 30C for couple of weeks now we're down to more normal 12 - 15c

Chilly here in Michigan...having to add boxes on the brood nest ...brood nest is starting that second big hatch but very little open larva they are plugged up.. hopefully by holding off they really pop nice.. going to give them some syrup fondant did a nice job but it's hard to work around.. everything getting nice box of drawn comb on top get that filled then I'll split them...

The girls were flying hard today .22 april The maple sap stopped flowing to the taps and pails we have So im thinking the maples are starting to bloom . I keep feed on the hives full time even if i have to remove full frames to make laying space once the nectars flow the syrup consumption slows 🐌. I see running your huge hives in singles keeps you busy . It wont be long before you will start adding a second box 10 days and kaboom 🎉

That’s a good test should save you time and money next spring knowing witch one you need to feed and not to feed on growing the nest

Is there any chance the bees air simply filling brood nest with honey and have more food available to them than you are thinking?

Your boxes look good. I guess this is the time you just really need to feed. Keep pushing the colonies. Keep them going forward. Even if it's baby steps. Mother nature can be like a politician. Promise one thing and deliver another. 😅
