Young People's Concert: Holst: The Planets / Bernstein • New York Philharmonic
Leonard Bernstein conducts the New York Philharmonic in Holst's orchestral suite, The Planets. Five of the seven movements-Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, and Uranus-are performed, and then Bernstein and the Philharmonic improvise a piece for Pluto, whose discovery in 1930 postdated the Holst composition.
Originally broadcast on CBS Television Network, March 26, 1972.
Produced and directed by Roger Englander.

This sounds like the music used in 2001: A Space Odyssey, when Dave Bowman was in that trippy hyperspace window. Of course, that's impossible, since 2001 was made in 1968, and this was performed in 1972.

It reminded me very short the soundtrack Jerry Goldsmith composed for Peter Hyams' 'Outland' (1981). My goodness, the marvels of spontaneous improvisation...

Ah, you mean György Ligeti's masterpiece, "Atmosphères". Magnificent work of avant-garde, micropolyphonic music.

This was the ending of the final televised Bernstein Young People's Concert, shown in 1972 - a strange way to end the series! Bernstein and his orchestra had done some improvisation in the 1964 Avant Garde series as well. It would take thirty hours to compose and three hours to rehearse. This method saves on overhead!

@@santicruz4012 Every improvisation is a one-time experience. But you can keep improvising more one-time experiences.

Sounds inspired a bit by Elliott Carter's Concerto for Orchestra that the orchestra had recorded recently at the time of the broadcast.

Lukas Foss is the one who showed Bernstein about improvisational conducting. Of course there are many others who have done this....Sun Ra, Muhal Richard Abrams, Butch Morris, Dizzy Gillese and your truly to name a few....inew creative processes yield prototypical music.
