Aside from holding the ferrous blade, what benefit does the magnet have? I guess it allows quick release? I can see a modification to this project, adding an additional benefit: adding an inductive coil in opposition and attraction to the magnet at a set frequency would allow the guillotine to oscillate in a linear motor fashion. With a set feed rate of cutting stock, such as with a another linear motor, one would get exact thickness of cuts, so for example, it would make for an interesting food processor.
