20 years ago my father passed away. I got a lot of stuff as a result of moving our mom to a different house...I got dads tackle box which sat on a shelf for 15 years. Digging through it about 5 years ago I found this exact same Boy Scout knife. I cleaned it and sharpened all the blades and gave it to my brother.

Great Video! I am getting ready to give my son my old boy scout pocket knife which has been sitting in drawer for probably 30 years now.( I had kids late). I have the one right after this. It has a white casing. Probably from 82-83. It even has a cattywampus lanyard ring on it. It is in slightly better condition than this one but slightly grungier. This video will help tremendously since I am going to try to do it all by hand.

That’s awesome! Always wanted to be a Scout when I was younger but my parents wouldn’t let me. Back then we did have Royal Rangers affiliation with Churches so we did get some camp skills. We lived to far out in the country for Scouts though. I’d like to think I made up for it by becoming an 82nd Airborne Paratrooper but it would have been cool to be both. I wish more young guys had the metal of the older Traditions of Scouts.

I learned to sharpen on a tri phone like yours, I still have the stones. The adhesive failed years ago, I have worn halfway through the course stone, the medium stone has been stained black with swarf, and the fine stone has been cracked and repaired. Other than adding a black Arkansas stone for that extra fine edge I still use the same stones in the same order a wonderful set.

Great job and excellent tips. When I clean up an old knife like this, I like to place the blades at a 90 degree angle, one at a time, and clean up the part of the spring that is showing. I find that this helps the snap and doesn’t break the spring.
@357magdad

@@patriot-hz1dy I usually use mineral spirits on tools with wood handles. I does a nice job of cleaning without swelling the wood like water might. It also won't harm most paints. A good traditional looking finish for wood handles/scales is 0000 steel wool and a few coats of Johnson's paste wax.

@@357magdad a part of me doesn't want to clean up the World War II era electricians knives kind of like the look up the way I found them gives them character and some mystery I think there is one tl-29 with the tl-29 etching painted on it on wood scales that I really want to be careful with not sure if the mineral spirits wall take some of that paint off. That knife looks like a better quality version of my British Richards scout knife, which my parents gave me when I was ten. It's in my pocket as I write. Recently, it ended up lost in a garden, and turned up a few days ago in the grass, severely rusted because none of it is stainless steel. That knife turned out great. I had one like that when I was in scouts. But not sure what happened to it. Always learn a lot of tricks from you. My son has a little knife that belonged to his grandfather. I tried restoring it but it's messing a part. If it's ok I will send you a email and picture and see what you think. Miss Magdad always impresses me with her skills. You and your family stay safe and healthy in this crazy world. Thanks

That was just an amazing restoration. Except for the minimal use of the Dremel everything was done so primitively. I had a very similar knife when I was a Cub Scout back in the 1950s only mine had blue scales if I remember correctly. I used to hook it on my uniform when we had meetings, I don’t think that would be allowed today. I’d probably wind up in jail!! Again great job! 👍

Best advice my old daddy give me about a pocket knife; was when I first started lettin' them girls sit next to me at the drive ins. He said be sure and move your pocket knife over into your left pocket. When I asked him why? He said to me... so they don't warp it's handle!

I bought one online basically identical. Mine however has a broken pin on the lanyard hole. I’m having trouble getting the old one out. Can I pull it out with a pair of pliers or should I drive it out from the opposite side with a punch?

@@357magdad that’s sort of what I figured but thought I’d ask. It’s in about the same shape as yours other then some piting so I’m really excited to see the end result. It also has a bent liner so I’m hoping I can just set the bolster with a ball peen hammer and not have to replace that pin also
