Dr. Christopher Phillips is the John and Dorothy Hermanies Professor of American History and the University Distinguished Research Professor in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Cincinnati. His research interests are in the area of the Civil War and Reconstruction - in the South and West, especially the border States and he is the author/editor of eight books on slavery, emancipation, the Civil War, and memory. Here, he talks with Kent about the occupations of Kentucky by Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War, what they were like, and how those occupations affected the bitterly divided people of Kentucky.
