You could restart the cardigan and check the new size before frogging! That way you won’t have to restart a third time if you change your mind about the size again ❤

That is a great suggestion. Also block the one you think is too big. Some yarn opens, some actually shrinks.

And yes: you do pronounce the E in Tynn Line 😊 I’m quite sure it’s a play on the norwegian word for linnen (Lin) and the norwegian girls name Line. So it’s «Skinny Line» directly translatet. Love from Oslo, Norway 🇳🇴

That's what I'm doing for the sweater I'm knitting now. It was turning out too big (especially after blocking) and now I've started a second one with the yarn I had left over. The smaller one seems to be turning out better. So far I've kept the first version for reference. Good luck!

My lace work gauge always seems to be bigger then stockinette stitch, I often have to go down a size in needle just for the lace work

Really great episode Amy! I enjoyed the discussions of shoulder construction and short rows. Your Whitmore cardigan is so beautiful! Before frogging I would do two things: 1. Recheck your gauge. You now have a giant gauge swatch! Check it in several places. See if you can figure out why it is coming out so large. 2. If you have more yarn, start the smaller version before frogging the bigger…make sure the smaller size is going to work for you. Also, I agree with you about the pure silk…I tried that yarn and did not enjoy it. Will not use it again.

I always have same feeling before I frog a project but I NEVER regretted it. It always gets better, it knits faster and smoother and I’m always happy i did it. Good luck with the cardigan, it’s a beautiful project

Literally clicked on this video because I saw the cumulus top in dusty artichoke and I’m mid-cumulus tee in dusty artichoke so it grabbed my attention! Everything looks beautiful… and in making the cumulus tee with the silk on the tiny needles, I also found the purling particularly unenjoyable … glad there was less of that for me… but the body has flown by so hopeful for you 💚💚💚💚

It’s kind of hard to find patterns that utilize the same shoulder construction as the Poppy pattern because the construction is often referred to as “English tailoring”, “French shoulder”, “Italian shoulder”, “Japanese shoulder“, etc depending on who is writing the pattern. However, the technique comes from RTW and “classic shoulder” is the true name. Many of the older knitting books for machine knitting outline how to draft in this manner.

Don’t worry about frogging the whitmore sweater because if it’s not fitting how you like it when it is complete you won’t wear it. I did the same thing with an Andrea Mowry fingering weight sweater that I had been working on for 6 months.

I recommend frogging the cardigan, I made the sweater version in superwash wool and it was fitting really well until I got it wet. Its got so big that I will need to either give it away or harvest the yarn in it. Yours is so pretty though!!! I hope it turns out the way you want.

When I have to frog as much knitting as you have on your cardigan I usually leave it knit and restart with the rest of my yarn. I don’t frog the original until I’m past the point of where I was on the new piece. Somehow psychologically I feel better about frogging when I’ve got another piece at the same point. Then as others suggested you can compare the sizes and pick whichever one you like better.

Ohh Amy, you should trust your gut. Put your cardigan on a Time Out and revisited on a month or so, and then you an frog it without hurting. The yarn is too precious to be on a project you will avoid wearing. Good luck. You can always do another Cumulus tee with the Tynn Line. I was hoping that the silk from KFO was going to be easy to handle ( no splitty) I am sad with your news. I had this crazy idea I will need at least 3 cumulus tees this summer, but I also got burned put with the purling on the first one with Truboo. I got yarn from hobii Tencel and linen to CO the secinf one, but I need a palate cleanser before I start purling again 😬

Really useful information in your podcast today. I didn't appreciate the difference between the Cocoknts method and the contiguous method so thank you for explaining it so clearly. I haven't yet tried either of these methods but some of the patterns you mentioned are in my Rav Favs so I'll be thinking about bumping them up to "Queue" status. It's always annoying to have to frog something but you probably won't regret it as much as carrying on having a garment you don't want to wear. It's a balance and your engineering mind will help you get your head round it. I made the Cumulus Tee last summer with KFO PureSilk and it took FOREVER. The tee is lovely and drapey and cool to wear. But after several super careful hand washes the texture has changed and has kind of "pilled". It's not a smooth texture - a bit like slub silk fabric. Very strange.

I so agree about the issues you had with the KFO pure silk. I am currently knitting a camisole with it in 10x10 rib and the start was very rough. I'd say I am getting used to it and how to handle the yarn differently but I have made many mistakes, especially in the purl sections where I knit into half the threads or picked some threads from the row below. Thank you for sharing your experience, it feels better to know I am not the only one.

Hi Amy! I agree that the tension in your poppy tee looks great! I loved hearing about your experience working with that yarn! I’m so sorry that your cardigan isn’t fitting as you hoped! I’d encourage you to go with your gut and frog it - you have a great mindset about wanting to use your investment in the yarn as best as you can. But who knows maybe blocking will change it! A Cumulus Tee is a dream project of mine but I can’t pull the trigger for some reason! I loved hearing your thoughts about it and your silk yarn 😁

When using interchangeable needles I switch to a smaller size on the purl end to compensate for the looser stitches. You do beautiful work. Great video😊

Your channel is my favorite knitting podcast. I love all your projects, your thorough and thoughtful analysis, and your pragmatic approach to yarn selection. Thank you for the time and care you put into making great and useful content. I learned so much about shoulder construction this time. As others have suggested, I would restart the cardigan before frogging the current one. With regards to purling, perhaps look into Portuguese knitting. I learned it several years ago and frequently switch between throwing on knit rows and Portuguese for the purl rows. It's a very fast way to purl.

Great episode! It was so nice to see another post from you. I really like your style and color choices. I did make the Cumulus Tee a few years ago except that I used a merino cotton blend. It was the wrong choice as it’s not very drapey. It is in Time Out and really should be frogged. I feel your pain!

If you're not 100% happy with the Whitmoor I would totally frog it. I know personally if theres ever a shadow of a doubt I don't end up wearing it haha. But definitely block first to decide! You may find the lace opens up a ton.

So much great content in this episode!! These are my two favorite shoulder constructions along with saddle shoulder. With your cardigan if you frog, I wonder if you can size down and then add some waist shaping or just cast on some extra stitches in the underarm? That first big frog hurts so bad. We have all been there!!!

I prefer 9” circs for socks too, but determined that using magic loop or DPNs are easier to manipulate when making patterned socks! Also a left handed knitter! ❤️❤️

I fished my first cumulus tee and immediately bought more pure silk and started a second one. The first one was cream and I found the front V to be too deep so I stitched it up with the silk and it looks like a design feature. For the second one in Rosie pink I reworked the pattern for a shorter v. I’m really short so taller or longer bodied people will probably be ok with the V Depth. I really like your green color, I may have to make a third one. 😮

You could add in some bust darts on the cardigan and start to do some decreases along the sides to bring it in.

I love my cumulus tee out of kfo pure silk but knitting it was definitely a struggle… I had exactly the same experience as you’re having, splitty yarn, hard on the hands, etc. I’ve now also knit a cumulus tee out of viking garn bambino and the fo is just as nice but it was a lot more fun to knit :)

Thanks so much for all the sleeve information it was very informative. Your cardigan, I was going to suggest blocking it first because swatches lie 🤦‍♀️ it may drop more than you expect so the width may not be too bad. I’d frog too if it wasn’t what I wanted. I frog/fix and restart straight away, no thinking just do it and don’t allow the pain to mess with my head. Thanks for sharing 🥰

LisaR: Your cardigan is gorgeous- but I can see why you're concerned about the size ...You did a beautiful job with the yoke & short rows def raised back neck ;) The second time around will go faster.You'll forget the frogging way faster than a finished cardi you won't wear (?) Been there - many times ..Great thing about hand knitting, you can always do over if it's not steeked when you're ready ;)

Fabulous episode! I think you explained those two different but similar yoke shaping perfectly! Thanks for taking the time to research them and convey the info in a clear manner 😊 As soon as you held up your cardigan I said to the screen it’s way to big, especially when the lace blocks out 😢 I question if even the next size down would be too big?? I seem to knit my lace work bigger then my stockinette gauge, I often go down a needle size for just the lace work….maybe a combination of going down a sweater size and needle size just for the lace would work?? Good luck finding the answer. 💓 LOVE your Poppy sweater in that AMAZING blue colour on you ! Take care

Hi Amy, I love your videos ❤. In the Kuutar Tee by Sari Nordlund those short rows are worked after the sleeves are separated and the turn points located on the underarms, so it uses less yarn and adds zero fabric on the yoke. Hope this helps!

Hi, I think the cardigan looks beautiful even when a little big. I would suggest before frogging to add some more rows to the body to make sure you get a better idea of the width of the body as well. It could be that you might like the width of the body of this size and just the schoulder part needs adjustment

I have only used KFO pure silk for scrunchies (for which it is amazing btw, and so gentle for your hair), but I have some for a larger projects. Excited to try and see if I have the same experience. If you have leftovers though - scrunchies are the best. My favorite pattern is shamelessly my own (sand scrunchie, unfortunately not yet in english). If you find a pattern that fits the gauge, try it with the scraps! 🥰

Am wearing the Cumulus Tee that I just completed! I do love the FO and found that a lot of the rowing out of the purl rows for the flat-knitted portions evened out after a wash. I am neutral to the experience of knitting with the yarn, mainly because I am generally a loose knitter and I work quite a bit of yarn with zero stretch in crochet. Am considering the Moonset Tee by Ozetta which uses the same yarn in the original design but I am put off by the amount of knitting that goes into the garment. I took almost 8 months to complete the Cumulus Tee and I don't think I have enought willpower to do something similar again!

I’m working the Kumulus right now and having same experience with flat raglan portion especially purling. Truly feels like a cursed pattern. I am working it in a cotton that I normally love so don’t write off the pure silk yet!

Frogging def hurts a bit, but I'm pro-frogging! I have a sweater WIP to frog, and a tee I'm considering frogging a part of. Also, 0 ease won't necessarily be tight on your tummy if your bust measurement is bigger! If you're worried about that, you could do a bit of waist shaping on the body too. Also, love the Poppy tee (that color!) and all the construction info. Thanks for sharing 😁😁

Girl I dislike KFO pure silk so much lol I even did a reddit post asking for tips on using it bc the swatch I forced myself to finish blocked beautifully but working with it was a tactile nightmare. I just bought a ball of their cotton/merino blend and that was much more enjoyable for me to work with. Moving forward if I do a summer top with this brand it’ll definitely be in that base.

you know i had the exact same thought when i first started working with kfo pure silk! i’m knitting the dappled lace raglan by james n watts in pure silk and i’m not enjoying it tbh..and it’s weirdly squeaky on the needles which is really testing me right now 😩 i also don’t think i’ll be using it again

I just finished a Kumulus tee in dusty artichoke! This knit was such a slog but I’m happy to have the finishes garment. When you get to the I-cord bind off DO NOT do any decreases as recommended in the pattern. I frogged and redid the bind off at the end. I followed the pattern on the sleeve bind off and that was okay, but it didn’t work well for the body.

My Whitmoore cardigan turned out too big. It was only my 2nd or 3rd sweater but I realize now that my gauge is a lot bigger on the top of a sweater when knitting flat. Especially PetiteKnit patterns. I am still thinking of frogging and reknitting it but I used mohair. 😢

Firstly, enjoying your podcasts very much😊. Without reading the rest of the comments, I would say the yoke is definitely too big on you and yes, it will stretch more with blocking…sorry! How about doing the S or even XS and after the yoke section and short rows are done, gently adding some stitches as you progress down the cardigan so that there is some more ease where you feel you need it? Good luck whatever you decide 👍

I don’t recommend blocking it first. Frogging it is better. I’ve frogged my work five times sometimes.

to me it is worth frogging anything I don't like, even if finished and worn sometimes. We put a lot of time and money in them garments and I don't think it is a race to the finish line. We do this because we like it not out of necessity so we need to enjoy every stitch and the final product too.

KFO silk is not fun to work with but I think it's a necessary evil 🙂 It is so splitty, has no recovery. But it wears exceedingly well. And you can put it in the washer and dryer (on delicate and low heat, try that treatment on your swatch if you are concerned). It's exceedingly cool even when the temp is 32C. Also, you will not find better colour options in silk anywhere else, IMO. The drape only improves with wear. I've only used it once and I will use it again. But I'm not rushing out to buy another batch!

Sorry but isabree you should go down a size you would love it more. It is beautiful and we’ll do e on the short row adjustment. I recently had to do the same with my cumulus tee. It was just too big and so sad to pull it out but right decision I love it even more now.

Very good point! I know in previous episodes I referred to the April Cardigan having a saddle shoulder. Perhaps saddle shoulders are a type of contiguous shoulder, but I would have to do more research to confirm!

thx for the shoutout for contiguous shoulders-- Isabel Kraemer's Cloudesley is one of the best fitting swtrs i've made...i've also made several round-yoke swtrs, and they often come out bigger than i'd like--if only i could grow bigger boobs! ;-) i have pretty narrow shoulders, and i never use all the incrs in the pattern. on one of these round yokers, with Sea Glass type colorwork, i added the short rows into the ribbed collar, which was fine. short rows in back--always! your texture on the Whitmoor looks terrific, so frog or not, i think you'll end up with a wonderful cardi. thx for a fun & informative video!

Did you check your gauge with the lace for your cardigan? It may be larger than the stockingette - you may need to consider a smaller needle size for the lace yoke….

I have not checked yet! Changing needle size for the lace portion would be a good idea.

I am so pro-frogging. Yes, you've spent a lot of time on something, but that's the sunk cost fallacy. No matter if you frog something or not, you're never getting that time back. The more important consideration is "do I want to spend more time on something I won't like?" For me, the answer to that is always no. In this case, I think blocking and then making a decision is best, but I tend to agree that the cardigan is too big.

I just did a major frogging on a tank I was crocheting using the new Lion Brand Truboo yarn. I got the back done and found the yarn was going to be too stretchy. I hated taking all that out but I’m glad I did now. I’ve started a different tank and I’m knitting it. I’m happy how this one seems to be going. You hate taking out all the work you put in but in the end you want to be really satisfied with the final piece. 🧶
