As someone who sews, but knows nothing about pointe shoes, it might be worth getting a sailmaker's palm to help with sewing through that difficult material. It's a leather strap that fits over your wrist/thumb with a little metal disc held on the squishy part of your palm. It's like a much beefier version of a thimble, allowing you to push with more force than just a finger, since it was used to get through tough canvas and other heavy fabrics used to make sails. Used in combination with pliers, it makes getting a needle through difficult fabric much easier.

Wait we made it through with out cups. Why its she not rejoicing? This is what Josephine wanted right? I can relate to the pirouette fail. I did that once with a pique pirouette. Band new slippers and for some reason I didn't step in the rosen box. I went up and came down crashing hard. Learned my lesson the hard way. Quick tip for sewing anything, by hand. I thimble is your friend. Save your fingers from bleeding.

For something that thick use pliers! I am a thimble advocate (it goes on your middle finger, to help push the needle through, a lot of people try to use them on the pointer finger) but when working with that many layers and that much glue pliers are the way to go! You get much better leverage and purchase on a needle when your whole hand can be pulling it.
@SimpleDesertRose
@SimpleDesertRose 2 жыл бұрын
@@thebadpoet I would think for something that hard to punch a hole through your would want a heavy duty leather awl to punch a hole in the fabric to get your needle through as well. Pilers can break needles. They do make little rubber pads that your can wrap around your needle to help you pull your needle through the fabric. I feel that basic sewing is something everyone should know. Especially dancers who do pointe, because things like this happen and the shoe needs a quick repair. Basic knowledge of the tools and how to properly use them can go a long way. Save hands and frustration.

Oh man - for darning pointe shoes I recommend curved upholstery needles (you can find them at most craft stores), and a pair of needle nose plyers. :D Or if you use an awl, pre-punch tiny holes or use a seam ripper to try and wiggle a hole between the threads/weave. It's what I used to do with mine and now as someone who does sewing it helps with PITA fabrics that would otherwise make me cry.

If you don’t have a thimble, use a coin and a band-aid. I prefer this to normal thimbles for sewing leather. The needle sticks a little in the band-aid and doesn’t slide no matter the pressure you put on it.

When I got my Pointe shoes, I had to sew on the ribbon and the elastic band around the ankle. But after about three practices, my laces came loose and I had re-sew every one of them so they wouldn’t come loose in a performance. But you know what happened? They came loose, I tripped, and fell off the stage. IM FINE NOW! THAT WAS LAST YEAR

Lol, I relate to the hip-hop one. I did ballet as a child/teen and switched to belly dance as an adult (been doing it almost 20 years now). My first workshop with a professional performer in belly dance, she immediately recognized my ballet background from the way I held my spine/shoulders/neck 😂. It took a lot of work to be able to make my spine adapt to more serpentine movement.

When I got my first pair of pointe shoes (from you, Miss Josephine!!), I used a curved leather needle for everything, including sewing the ribbons. And a leatherman for pushing it in and pulling it through, because Capezios are made of steel and ambition. The sailmaker's thimble is probably up for my next pair, once I get back to dancing. Seeing pointe shoes is a labour of love and determination, and terrifying the first time, too!

I love the Tik Tok reactions…I don’t even have Tik Tok and have never used it…but the stuff they have that you show is hilarious…even better is the looks of horror on your face, lol! Love your channel, never taken a dance class in my life, but always wanted to take ballet growing up…mainly for the pretty costumes and cool pointe shoes…but I love watching ballet (and dance in general) and it’s really cool to see you fit pointe shoes, and just what a total difference the correct shoe for each individual is. I was a figure skater, and when I was skating, the really good boots (i.e. crazy expensive, Mom loved paying for those) were individually made for you, and they sent off plaster casts that the skate store made of your foot up through your mid calf, so it fit the ankle correctly and didn’t “cut into” the back of your calf. It was cool, and they were awesome…made a huge difference in how well I could skate (land jumps, control spins and edges, and do school figures…yes, it was a long time ago, school figures were still a thing in figure skating then.

Freed to a few of those vids actually but my favourite is the one where they partner with a company called Ballet Black...for those dancers who won't be given a chance in big famous companies, because they don't have the body type or skin. Oh man, ballet dancers need to get them some sashiko thimbles! They go on like a ring, and have a pebbled surface. You can push through damn near anything with them, but I'd highly recommend getting the sachiko needles and thread. I've broken US needles with that thimble, and you need a sturdy thread to work with that gauge eye.

4:20 for sewing around the box, i'm not surprised regular sewing needles don't cut the mustard - there are special curved needles for tapestry or quilting that're strong enough to go through leather, and the curve would be easier to maneuver around the box. my local craft shop sells them under the name mattress needles, they're $5!

Dental floss seems to be very popular for darning ballet shoes, but it seems a bit expensive? Reach is 1.87 for 55 yards and Glide is 18.29 for 262 yards (a six pack on amazon), while a spool of hand quilting thread is 4.99 for 220 yards? And if anyone knows JoAnn's, they know there are always sales and coupons. I wonder if anyone has done a darning and functional use comparison?

I think a lot of dancers don't realize that you can buy different weights of thread and wax it yourself for far, far cheaper than sewing with dental floss!
@thebadpoet
@thebadpoet 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t use quilting thread for your shoes! It’s cotton wrapped cotton and will degrade much quicker than cotton wrapped poly or poly wrapped poly. I would suggest buttonhole twist which you probably have to order online since I don’t think Joann’s carries it. It’s a very heavyweight thread meant to go in the bobbin when you make buttonholes to make sure they are strong. I use it for the bobbin thread when I’m doing a very long piece of gathering as well. It’s also called hy-mark but that’s a brand name and I’m not actually sure they are still in business.

I feel like pointe shoe makers should get to go to performances for free. Like yeah maybe you cant always show up to the opening night but maybe they can have them attend dress rehersals or something. it seems unfair that they dont get to see the product of their hard work and im sure their ballerinas would love to meet the man or woman behind their shoe. the thing they literally wear everyday that allows them to be so amazing.

It has to be your own, and the blood has to be fresh. There are enzymes in your own spot which can get out a little bit of your own blood. Also, use curved upholstery needles and pliers to sew something that thick! Just a thimble won’t cut it, you’ll snap the needle before it makes it through.

If you're having difficulty with sewing, use jeweller's pliers to pull through the needle so you don't even touch the needle and lose grip on it. Also with using rosin or beeswax to strengthen the stitching threads helps with longevity; in addition to the pliers, I fine doubling up the thread, running thru beeswax, then knotting the two ends together and threading a LEATHERWORKING needle (because of the shape of the needles used fornleatherworking are 3-side, it makes them ideal to pierce multiple fabrics, and you can even get bent ones to make ghings even easier. They are also much more hard-wearing than some random mattress or darning needle, and are not super expensive like the kits sold can be). I recommend getting a sets of two pliers (fine/needlenose, jeweller's pliers, due to size and because the hardier ones for electricians are far too clunky and sometimes come greased up) are going to be especially useful in guiding your needle thru hard material without much pressure or risk of pushing the needle into your hand like ghat poor girl if you aren't familiar with sewing and or don't have a thimble. Source: I am a historical reinactor and have made about 15 sets of leather turnshoes, which started when I was 15 and couldn't afford the ghillies I kept running thru for irish dance, so I was determined and found cheap but high-quality leather offcuts, and because I have tiny feet (size 5 USA) it was more than enough and only took me 3 tries before I developed a usable pattern and method that worked. I only used this for my practice ones as they have soft-suede-soles, but the performance ones are more akin to jazz shoes, ballet shoes and that iron age shoe found in europe had a baby and added like 10 extra seams and laces for no apparent reason haha (just look up irish dance ghillie or highland/Scotland dancing pump to see similar)

So, as to the "are you sick of these yet?" I do not dance, nor does anyone I know, yet I am terribly entertained by your videos. Also, speaking of mind blowing, Sofie Dossi 10 min photoshoot on youtube, would love to see you react to that.

by the way, if you ever need to get a small amount of blood out of fabric (like in that one tt), your own saliva has enzymes which will break it down, hydrogen peroxide also works, but it can bleach the fabric a bit

So I do WERQ (it's a dance workout, like Zumba but better) and we dance to Todrick Hall Nicki Minaj Cardi B etc. Well one of the dances we do jumps to the side and with me being a ballet dancer I can't help not to make it ballet with hands and all. Also when the guy was doing the "ballet look" that is so relatable because every time I have class I try to look as tacky as possible because when I stop at the store I love the looks I get from people.

Yoo I almost went to a dance school to become a professional dancer, but they required you to also do hiphop and musical dancing and I had only trained in classical ballet, so I had to do a year long prep course for hiphop and musical. And that TikTok is so real 😭 they would be like 'just relax' and I would be like 'I don't know what that means 😭'. 'Stand with your legs shoulder width apart', me: second position, them: no, just stand like a normal person, me: *confused*.

It's kinda sad about the point shoe makers never having seen a performance. I also wonder if they'd change anything about how they make them if they had

OMG I am legit so concerned about the girl who tried to sew her GM shoes. I wear GM shoes and I have the same problem with the seam breaking apart, otherwise the shoe totally still works. So I glued a suede tip on and darned across. You definitely need PROPER tools for darning GM shoes, these are no joke! I had a thick awl that they use for sewing leather, which is literally how durable and thick these GM fabrics are anyways!

Use an upholstery needle on your shoes. better for thicker fabrics and easier to use. Don't forget the thimble.
