Lugia's song always makes me cry on command. It's the biggest nostalgia hit of my life, reminded me all of my family and friends when I was only 6 years old. Everyone's grown up now and we've moved onto adult life. Just glad that song exists. It will always be a reminder of how great everything was back then.

God damn Lugias song is one of the most nostalgic songs from my childhood, still getting chills and fond memories from hearing it to this day....

Actually Robin there was no chosen one aspect to the Japanese version. Any trainer could have done what Ash was doing. He was doing it to go along with the Shamui tradition but it ended up being a necessity by the end. Also it highlights cooperation in the Japanese version. Saying that no one person can do anything alone. There is no mention of him in the ancient texts. So basically Japanese version=Ash is a passing Pokemon trainer, they decide to include him in their ceremony. What was thought be just a simple tradition turns out to be the only thing that can stop a global catastrophe. Ash could be swapped out by anyone, but he decides to do it himself because he promised he'd do it. English version= Ash just HAPPENS to be there where a prophesy about him is taking place. Shenanigans ensue.

There's at least one interpretation that Lawrence III considered himself to be the Chosen One of the prophecy, but he interpreted the prophecy's line of "Into your hands, bring together all three/Their treasures combined tame the Beast of the Sea" as meaning that, in order to quell the storm he needed to bring together all three BIRDS rather than all three orbs in order to summon and capture Lugia to save the world and be the hero himself. Also, all of the first three Pokemon movies share a fairly important trait: All three serve as deconstructions of what Pokemon are to a trainer. The first movie showed the issues with trainers who think of Pokemon merely as fighters - namely, they're not. Although they can fight, they are still living creatures, not weapons, and there is such a thing as fighting too seriously. This movie deconstructs the idea of trainers who see Pokemon as collectibles - Lawrence III pretty much does what every single player of the games does; he captures legendary Pokemon and leaves them in his box or trades them for a better legendary. And the film shows that the old Gotta Catch 'em All method has terrible ramifications for the world as a whole. The next movie goes as far as possible, by showing even Ash's idea of Pokemon - seeing Pokemon as friends/enablers - is not safe from deconstruction. Molly uses Pokemon simply as companions, Pokemon who (being made from Unown's illusions) are incapable of being anything but her companions, and this is shown to have detrimental effects on her own psyche/her ability to befriend real Pokemon. Also also, the greatest feeling in the world: Go exactly one year without hearing or even thinking about Lugia's song, then listen to it after that year ends. Pure Heaven in your ears.

In the original Japanese, it was, indeed, happenstance that Satoshi (Ash) was the Chosen One.

The Japanese version had a different message, being about people and pokemon needing each other to survive instead of the typical "chosen one saves the world". As such, the prophecy in the Japanese version refers to a great trainer, which Lugia states must be human, and it's stated that Ash was the best they could get fast enough. It's also implied he's the one to fulfill the prophecy because he was the one strong enough to get the treasures from their pedestals.

Okay, from what I read about the original, is that Ash was not prophesied as in the dub. In the original, he's merely chosen because he was the only exceptional pokemon trainer, as he was able to get the first two treasures, thus they expected he would get all of them and save the world because he was that determined to. Honestly, they could have used that reason as it makes more sense and it doesn't make Ash look like a Gary Stu. (Boy version of Mary Sue). It would have also saved some major mistranslations as the Italian and Dutch dubs copied from the English dub.

i don't know how the original did the prophecy but I kind of like the whole metaphorical sounding prophecy actually being literal thing. That was one of my favourite chuckles trying to read GoT which didn't make it into the series where Melisandre reveals the reason she follows Stannis and he fits her prophecy through fancily twisted metaphor when the reader knows there is someone else in the plot who fits it via literal directness

Alright, I don't mean to sound like a jackass, but for the love of God, Lugia is NOT the "beast of the sea"! He is the "water's great guardian", aka "the guardian of the sea". The "beast of the sea" is the current that runs between the islands. If any one wants to say I'm wrong, go look it up! Both the movie and the game say so. so a mildly funny story about a certain line in the movie, when ash say, "sometimes i wish my mom had named me Bob" this line has haunted me for a long time, as my family keeps on bringing it up, as the name i go by is Bob, just a little bit of personal history with this movie that is a major part of my childhood

One thing the movie (at least the English dub) didn't make clear is that Lawrence III (the film's antagonist) misinterpreted the prophecy. He thought that _he_ was the chosen one, that the "three" referred to the Legendary Birds (rather than the treasures), and that the "Beast of the Sea" was Lugia (when it was the great storm). He legitimately didn't know that what he was doing would destroy the world.

I rewatched this movie a few months ago and I actually found Misty's line when they were captured to be pretty funny when the villain spoke about his exploits. "The way you talk it's like pokemon are just things to collect like dolls or stamps!" Does she not know the tagline for this entire series? Still get chills though from that song.

When she said that line, "The world shall turn to ash", I thought that literally meant the world was going to be destroyed. Great pun. :P In the Japanese version she says, "Wait, that means... Satoshi?!" after the rest of the group wonder about who could control the birds. Satoshi appeared to be the only one who could pry the spheres out thus coming to that conclusion unless it was just an assumption on their part because of that.

There was a lot of changes made by 4Kids in the English dub, one of which was making the legend directly about Ash. In the original Japanese, the legend (which is really more of poetic instructions), it only makes mention that a Pokémon Trainer will be the one to save the world. It does not say "Satoshi," Ash's original Japanese name. Other edits include changing the legendary birds to titans from gods, removing a line in which Kojiro (James) reveals that he and Musashi (Jessie) are 15, removing a line that makes Tracey relevant, Misty getting mad at the unnamed (in the movie) villain Lawrence III for not using poké-balls to catch the birds the normal way, adding the completely irrelevant slogan "the power of one," and several other edits that had no purpose.

I agree. The music in this movie is freaking amazing! The song Melody plays is the song I remember the most from this movie and I LOVE IT! Everything about that entire music is played perfectly with the animation accompanying it. Just listening to it brings tears to my eyes. It's that good. I'm glad you pointed out how awesome Lugia's Song is.

I liked this movie the most out of all the movies so far, with Rise of Darkrai or Lucario and the Mystery of Mew being close seconds. Not only does Lugia have one of the coolest entrances of any Pokémon, but the music and animation are nice. I also have a theory that it wasn't just that Ash was in the right place at the right time, but it is mentioned that the three orbs will only react in the hands of the Chosen One, which they did when Ash grabbed them. It is possible that because Ash has the ability to use Aura, the orbs would only react to him, possibly suggested by Slowking when it says that Ash has to do it. I mean if the staff Lucario was trapped in for centuries reacted to Ash's Aura, other things out there may do the same.

I'm glad you gave a good review on this movie. Pokemon 2000 is the thing that got me into pokemon as it was one of the first movies I have ever seen and one of the only movies I've seen more than twice willingly. I love this movie and to see my favorite anime related channel reviewing it is AWESOME!

This is still my favorite of the Pokemon movies as it had the best soundtrack in my mind, the plot was pretty solid, and it had some of the best Team Rocket moments (though the funniest ones are in 3.) And yes, The Power of One is GORGEOUS!

as a kid Pokemon 2000 was my fave out of the the first 5 that i grew up with. Seeing Lugia come out of that whirl of water in the theaters big screen along with his signature sound was enough to capture my imagination. Overall just made me learning world myths so much more fun and seem more alive in my mind. btw your name isnt lame ^^

This is actually better than Mewtwo Strikes Back. For starters, it doesn't have a hypocritical message about refusing to fight. Mewtwo Strikes Back was incredibly preachy with its message about non-violence despite the entire Pokemon franchise revolving around creatures that are DESIGNED for violence. This movie doesn't try to hammer in a message. If it has one at all, it leaves it to the audience's interpretation because it's more about the visuals, tone and god tier music. Lugia's Song is the greatest soundtrack Pokemon has ever produced and it probably helps that it's completely unique to this movie. As awesome as it would be to hear it in the main anime, which has occasionally happened with other great soundtracks (for example, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew's soundtrack was used during Ash's battle with Maylene), it's better to leave it as a one and done. It makes The Power of One all the more special. The scene with Ash flying on Lugia alongside the calm Articuno, Moltres and Zapdos before the Beast of the Sea bursts out of the ocean is perfect. No dialogue, no need to explain what the massive stream of water is, it just lets the music and the visuals do the talking. Show, don't tell. This movie knew when to stop talking, something that Pokemon in general isn't very good at. Lugia's introduction was purely a visual spectacle whereas Mewtwo started talking as soon as he showed up. And finally, this movie actually has Team Rocket do something useful for once. In Mewtwo Strikes Back, they were only involved because they're expected to be in every single Pokemon episode and movie. In The Power of One, they have a reason to be in the story because without them, Ash and Lugia would have failed to stop Articuno, Moltres, Zapdos and Laurence III.

Pokemon 2000 and Pokemon 4 Life were two of my favorite movies growing up.

Lugia is hands down my all time favorite Pokemon thanks to this movie. And that power of one score... as someone who loves listening to Movie Soundtracks every since I was very little, I wanted this movie's soundtrack so bad because of that amazing score when I first saw this movie in theaters... ALSO I'M KICKING MYSELF TO THIS DAY FOR NOT KEEPING MY ANCIENT MEW CARD...!!! THAT ALONG WITH MY GOLDEN OCARINA OF TIME CARTRIDGE!!! T_T

i started to cry when the song power of one played on the movie when i first got it, 2000 was a movie that had really great music while mewtwo had really great animation and story and to this day i still watch the two movies even with my nice and nephew

I love Pokemon The Movie 2000! It is my favorite Pokemon Movie. Yes, it's not without it's flaws (no movie is) but it's still a wonderful film.

I especially like the soundtrack "To the Third Treasure." It starts off triumphant and cheerful when Team Rocket picks up Ash, has a bit of danger and tension in the middle when the birds attack, and it's all uphill from there, having a climactic build-up after build-up whilst the hero and villains ride through the roller coaster of the island caves.

This movie came out on my 12th birthday in theaters. I still remember every moment of that experience. That score brings tears to my eyes every single time, and I am SO disappointed that I can't get a low enough range on my sweet potato ocarina to play the first portion. This will always be my favorite Pokemon movie, even though I agree that the first one had a better plot, it didn't have my favorite legendary of ALL TIME....or come out on my birthday. Edit: Oh, and Weird Al doing Polkamon was beautiful. XD

This movie is by far one of the best, with its exiting amount of lightning paced action, the thrilling soundtrack, the crazy battles between all the legendary Pokemon, and the pure meaning of peace in the movie is what makes it good, I saw this years ago on CW50 and it was AWESOME!!!! I couldn't believe what I saw I was so amazed, such an amazing movie, and as always peace✌🏻️

I agree fully. The music and the four lengdary birds, especially Luigia saved this movie. Lugia's song is too one of my favorites and to this day one of my favorite legendary pokemon.

I do agree that is has a more shaky story than Mewtwo strikes back, but so do actual events in history and legends. Though I personally don't like the story as much as the Mewtwo story line and wish it wasn't set up that way. I still think that it is a good example of showing that even on a random adventure; that happens to be prophesied or otherwise, adventures can happen anywhere and at any time and you should greet them with vigor in your step and determination in your heart. Good job on your review and I hope to see more soon :)

This brings up a topic that I think we can all agree on. There are two thing the Pokemon anime needs to stay away from: Prophecies and Time Travel. From what I've heard, in the original japanese version, the prophecy didn't label Ash as the chosen one, but he decided to do it anyway. I like that setup better. Ash is already the star of the anime, he didn't need to be the chosen one. It felt forced to me. "Pokemon4Ever" and "Arceus and the Jewel of Life" were both badly written. In 4Ever's defense, it's better than Jewel of Life, but that's not saying much. 4Ever is easier to follow, while Jewel of Life is convoluted, confused, and has more plot holes than 4Ever.

+Anime American hope you can review Pokemon 3 the movie in time; the elements in that movie is pretty good. Nice Review! Keep up the work!

This was a good review, Anime America. I definitely agree that the music was a big reason for this movie's popularity. I also read in a fanfiction called Traveler that Ash's position in the Orange Island prophecy was that anyone capable enough could've done the job, similar to the Japanese version of the movie. Ash just happened to be quick enough to react in the fic. I kinda think the English version forced the intention that Ash was needed to save the world. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he succeeded but I think as long as Armageddon was prevented, that's all that mattered. Anyways, keep up the good work. Looking forward to other videos for Pokémon month. I think my favorite movies are the first movie, the Manaphy movie, and the Darkrai movie. Though that might be because when I used to just watch and rewatch whatever movie I had playing over and over and over again while I played with my toys. I think I saw some of those movies 100+ times.

Minor nitpick about Lawrence III's motivations. He didn't want to destroy the wrld if it would get him his prize, he misinterpreted the prophecy and wasn't aware that the world was in danger. Or at least, thought that if he caught Lugia, the troubles would disapear. He's selfish and an egomaniac, no doubt, but he's not a genocidal villain.

I do not know when you will review it or if you will; but my favorite will probably be Celibi's movie (Pokemon Forever?). The use of time travel to lend reason to why Oak became so great and the fact they combined two of my loves into one movie was awesome. Time travel and Pokemon is awesome, because what have the Celibi been responsible for.

Out off all the Pokemon movies I've seen over the years the first three are my personal favourites I saw the Pokemon movies in theatres the very first three what when I saw Lugia Moltres Zapdos and Articuno for the very first time on the big screen Lugia became one of my favourite Pokemon of all time when I was growing up and now I'm nearly 30 years old and I still love the Pokemon movies that the 1st free and I'll never get tired of it
