These "blowing in the wind without flapping animations" would work if they were actually moving forward, but they're staying in the same spot, and even then birds flap their wings occasionally

The 2D animations in Gen 5 were SO GOOD. Archeops clumsily flapping its wings trying to stay airborne, Cofagrigus' shadow arms retracting inside its coffin, Zebstrika's stripes shining yellow when he attacks, Ferroseed constantly spinning 360 degrees and Ferrothorn trying to stay attached to the ceiling with its vines. Now all these Pokemon look lifeless in the 3Ds and Switch games...

Why is no one talking about the moving animation for over world wingull for sword/shield??? THEY JUST T POSE AND TURN RIGIDLY

These animations are all perfect, you just don't understand the aerodynamics here. The pokemon are actually gliding on hot air currents that constantly permeate from Masuda and Omori's mouths and their own rectums. If they flapped their wings, the raw stench of lies and unfinished work would get into their trainer's noses, further ruining the experience.

The saddest part about this is that the flying and gliding idle animations could have easily been used in tandem to emulate how birds actually behave in the air but of course, between flapping its wings and stiffly gliding GF had to choose the one that defies all laws of gravity as their only idle animation

I actually never noticed how weird the floating thing was. Now the problem is not noticing it.

You know I kinda wonder why they do this. If they are so afraid of the mobile market then why aren't they competing with it by blowing everyone away with new mechanics, great graphics and lively pokemon. Instead it feels like they're just doing the bare minimum in games these days and removing features

Not gonna lie, when I saw what the did to Skarmory back in the day I refused to use him because of how stupid they made him look. Stadium 2 Skarmory was the best.

Didn't even talk about my boy Scyther. The N64 had him down perfectly, and then Sky Battles happened. Though considering he got cut from Sw/Sh entirely, perhaps I should just consider myself lucky I got two more games with him.

Skarmory actually has a second Idle animation, at least in Sun and Moon, where it flaps it's wings in a very interesting way, with the motions suggesting it has three seperate pairs of wings on each sides, suggested by the subtle latency of the red "feathers" rising to meet the steel feather, adding some interesting flare. Perhaps the other gliding Pokemon have these animations, too, I've just never seen them because I was to busy trying to either catch them or defeat them. And it's way more interesting to see airborne Pokémon actually gliding, and I think salamance is 10x as intimidating this way, and I think it's better than them just sitting there. It works with the smaller bird pokemon, doesn't really work with larger ones, especially considering that Pokemon with flight capabilities are probably more effective when they're swooping around, and flying in for the attack, like real birds and insects. Which they didn't used to. Still doesn't explain Electross, though. They could've incorporated that wavy-ness into his animations, while having him floating a bit in his idle. But now he just looks really weird...

Oh my god, I just noticed that while Swellow is flying its wings are still stuck to the side of its body. All they did was stick an extra pair of wings on it and didn't even bother removing the stationary wings

My favourite flying animation is Archeops, his animation captures that he's struggling to fly like the pokedex describes him as not flying well My least favourite is Salamence's. He's one of my favourite pokes and it's really disappointing that a Pokemon who basically willed itself to grow wings just... T-poses in the air...

It looks like all the flying animations are for the Pokemon when they're soaring or moving forward. Birds flap their wings for vertical motion but typically lock their wings and soar to move forward. And eels don't wiggle around like that unless they're trying to move forward. Why gamefreak thought it was a good idea to give pokemon forward moving animations while stationary, I'll never know

I know I'm 7 months late, but when X&Y was released there was an interview somewhere that stated they did this on purpose cus they wanted to keep the "cutesy" style or something along those lines where it wont be as realistic as Battle Revolution. For Swellow's bad flying animation, the literally just pasted an open pair of wings over his closed wings. Look at it, he technically has two pairs of wings.

Skarmory, one of my favorite pokemon designs, is completely shafted by it's animations. Hell, it stops flying in Pokemon Refresh for USUM, and at that point it's design clicks again and looks good. Skarmory hovering and flapping it's wings occasionally as an idle animation should have never been the way it battles

Swellows flight animation didn’t even bother to rid itself of its folded idle animation wings. They just gave Swellow _four wings._

Also, if you look at Xatu's T-pose, they took the standing model, moved it's head up, made it horizontal, and gave it wings. I say this, because if you look, Xatu somehow has both its wings across its front like if it was standing AND has its wings out for flying. They gave him an extra pair of wings cuz they were THAT LAZY.

It makes no sense that Gamefreak wouldn’t hire or poach developers capable of these types of animations knowing they were going to make the jump to a legit console. What a letdown.

I always hated how the flying types looked in the 3DS games but it never hit me it was because of Sky Battles.

The Xatu one pisses me off especially since its supposed to look like a totem pole when it stands but instead they have it floating in an awkward position which goes against what the design itself was trying to convey.

Although it's probably too ambitious I've always wanted to see gamefreak make different idle animations for each pokemon based on it's nature Like a mankey who is calm could just be kinda pouting or stomping it's feet while a rash mankey could be jumping angrily and hitting it's head I know that there are so many pokemon and so many natures but I think the pokemon company could give gamefreak the resources to do it

Its kind of strange in gen 6 for flying Pokemon. They are either hovering and flapping their wings. Or they appear static but are actually soaring in space. Swellow is actually mid flight but is just stopped in place. Birds while soaring tend to not move their wings and will just glide. It seems that is the part that Nintendo froze. I agree this looks stupid and the hovering in place flapping their wings like Pidgeotto looks better even if most birds can’t actually do that in real life.

I bet there are millions of animators worldwide willing to work at Gamefreak to improve the quality of the series. "Do better then". Ok then, hire me.

It confuses me so much that they go with the static, lifeless animations rather than the much more animated and alive animations that they made themselves??

What makes this sad is how some Pokémon are actually visible in the overworld now. It adds so much character to Pokémon like Haxorus when it runs at you like the T-Rex from Jurassic Park, and then there is Wingull just T-posing in the air.

I've always hated how dead the Pokemon look in the 3D Game Freak games, and the bird/winged Pokemon have bothered me immensely since X and Y. It's absurd that they just recycled the same shitty animation for so many Pokemon, ruining their appeal for me and so many others.

I just want another company to be given the mainline Pokemon games.

Tbh I prefer the swimming electross animation, it gives it a much more lamprey like movement and fits in better with its first stage

...Did anyone notice that Xatu and Swellow each have 4 wings in their X and Y models? What I mean by that is: Gamefreak had models with their wings tucked in on their chests for their grounded animations. But when they made their flying animations, they didn't bother removing those wings from the models. Instead, they added gliding wings and left the other ones still tucked in their chests. This becomes more noticeable when you compare the flying animations from Colosseum with X and Y. Do you notice how Xatu has a green colour on its chest in Colosseum when it's wings are extended? Notice how X Y doesn't? That's because X and Y still has the wing pattern on it. It might take a bit, but you can also notice Swellow's huge bulges at it's sides when it's wings are extended. Those are wings.

I grew up on Pokemon Heartgold. WHERE YOU COULD SEE A BIRD FLAPPING ITS WINGS EVERY TIME YOU OPEN THE GAME

No ones going to talk about the fact swellow's flying animation just adds new wings to the model so now it has 4 wings instead of 2?

I honestly don't blame game freak for the animations in pokemon X and Y, because they had to do over 600 new models and their little animations but what I don't understand is why they didn't fix that in ORAS, SM, Usum or SWSH.

A lot of the “not flapping it’s wings” is to imitate the effect of it soaring through the air.

Maybe the region is so impossibly windy that all the flying pokemon can just hover via gliding
