Fun context for people: Persona is a spinoff of Shin Megami Tensei which was the FIRST monster collecting game that went on to inspire Pokemon. So yes in a way SMT and Persona are responsible for the biggest media franchise lmao.

You can save personas you want to keep by recording them in the compendium while in the velvet room. You can update them when you level them up or add new moves too. Though you do have to pay.

As someone who has been playing Persona and Shin Megami Tensei since 2013, and Pokémon since 1998, I'm glad to see that both Atlus franchises are finally getting recognition for their feats in the monster collecting genre and in regards to both their gameplay and story telling, as well as presentstion, especially because SMT itself predates Pokémon by a couple years. I'd recommend SMT 3, 4 and 5 to newcomers as they're all solid gameplay wise, and Devil Survivor Duology has an excellent and gripping story as well as characters. Good review too btw, hopefully Persona 6 builds on the complaints many of us had for 5

You say talking to the shadows to acquire personas felt detached from the SMT gameplay, yet demon conversations are a core part of mainline SMT games. Not all of them have it, but it's a large part of the series' identity.

I actually got Persona 5 when it first came out in 2017. Was pretty fun. I do think that the moments where Ryuji is the butt of the joke are pretty unfunny though.

I finished the first dungeon today and it hit me. “Crap this game is getting complicated and technical”. I’m gonna have to plan out how to rank up confidants, boost my social stats (which might have benefits in certain conditions)…all while preparing, and taking down palaces and momentos. It’s all a little overwhelming because I know the game happens over like an entire year and confidants, social stats, personas, and palaces are all connected in some way. I have to watch all of them to make sure I’m optimizing for the ending I want. I want to make sure I unlock third semester and probably want to romance Kasumi and get the showtime move for Kasumi. I’m both excited and overwhelmed. I must also say this art is incredible. When I mean art…I don’t just mean the visual art. The anime style is beautiful, but the soundtrack is also captivating, and the story is engaging.

I'm glad you enjoyed P5R, it's a fantastic game :D Seeing more and more long time Pokemon fans like myself become jaded and critical, I can only encourage people to think about what draws them to Pokemon and try other games. For me personally, I've always enjoyed collecting all my favourite cute critters, building different teams on every replay of a Pokemon game, and I enjoy minmaxing IVs + EVs even if I'm not into competitive battling. So when SwSh came out, I had decided I would not be buying it after dexit, so I wanted to try out other JRPGs. After starting my branching out with Digimon and Dragon Quest, I ended up buying Persona 4 Golden on a friend's recommendation and I've been hooked on Persona and Shin Megami Tensei ever since. Going from Pokemon's evolution system where you have *your* Pokemon that stays with you the whole game (and likely evolving a few times), to the Persona/SMT fusion system took some getting used to. But now I absolutely LOVE it. Figuring out the mechanics behind the fusion system was an eye-opener. It went from 'random bullshit go' fusing and holding onto my personas/demons for way longer than I should, to pouring over fusion calculators and abusing the compendium to tailor-make my party to handle anything thrown at it. SMT IV and Persona 2 duology have been my favourite experiences with the franchise so far. I look forward to playing more JRPGs (I've got my eyes on Fire Emblem and Xenoblade next) while I hold out hope for Game Freak to improve.

You might want to get a pc or another console varient for strikers. The load times on the switch are concerning.

It's called POKEMON UNBOUND, it's really good and in my opinion better than most of pokemon game, I will not spoil you anything about the game but it's pretty good. Btw it's gba fan made game btw and the quality look like ds more than a gameboy advance.

I’m glad you joined the Pokémon defectors and started playing persona, that’s literally the gateway game into JRPGs for a lot of frustrated Pokémon fans. Now go preorder reload and have a blast. If you want more, Yakuza like a dragon has an amazing story and turned based gameplay that’s addicting. Xenoblade might be too out there for you to jump right into, but it’s really fun once you give it a chance if you’re into all of these games. The sky’s the limit from there with suggestions

You should play a real Shin Megami Tensei game. Like Shin Megami Tensei IV. They fixed the emulator issues, so you can play without weird black boxes. 👍

personally i absolutely loved the turn based combat and persona fusion, most of the story, and didn't care too much for the social stuff. so maybe the shin megami tensei series is for me instead. not sure. also i totally agree, yaldaboath was the dumbest thing ive ever seen in a game. they shouldve fleshed out the shido palace and then better game!

The entire persona series is a goated RPG franchise. You will at least fall in love with one of the main games. Both Persona 5 and Persona 3 Reloaded are good places to start. Playing P1 and P2 on the PSP is also worth the time imo, they are underrated.

If you really want to expand your JRPG horizon, my completely out of left field suggestion is Dark Souls. You said you like exploration and world building? Dark Souls has it, you said you don't like turn based combat? Dark Souls doesn't have it. You may be scared off by the "notorious difficulty" but it's not that hard, the hardest DS boss is still less annoying than Okumura

What I don't like about this game is the illusion of choices most of the time joker felt like a ghost even if you don't choose any dialogues the story will just progress anyway. It felt like a downgrade from persona 4 since joker is just a really boring protagonist with no personality, he doesn't have a character development, his dialogues are all boring trying to be polite all the time trying to progress the relationship. And also, these characters don't talk like real high school friends do, they more like someone you just kind of work with, which I don't think they should be talking like that when they all have to works together risking their lives. That's why persona 4 is my favorite since it has a campy vibe feels and funnier more interesting characters.

Pokemon has always sucked ass compared too other RPG's, they've always been a easy, lazy, portable games and i have no clue why people for some reason believe pokemon was ever good to begin with. hell even back in gen 1 you could easily beat anybody in the game if you had the correct type match ups and just used super effective attacks even cynthia's legendary garchomp got fucked by 1 ice type, or just solo the game with a lv 100 starter. seriously pokemon has never been good, it's a time waster. we aren't wide eyed kids anymore, we do adult things now so can we stop with the rose tinted glasses for pokemon nostalgia?. move on too better games that are worth your money already, i know i have and i haven't looked back.
