I just moved to Warsaw from Mexico City 2 and a half weeks ago and I couldn't agree with you more. I heard and read a lot of complaints from Polish people about all the bureaucracy and how hard it could be to settle pretty much any official matter, so I was like "Oh well, that was troublesome in Mexico, so it'll probably be more or less the same" and now I'm really shocked at how easy everything has been so far! The incorporation of technology into official paperwork is wonderful, it makes stuff much more agile, simple and easy to understand and do, and I haven't had to stand in any huge lines and get copies of 100 documents for anything.

No, Warsaw never remembered Chisinau, even in the communist era (also, because it is the town with a very different history and mentality). And in the mid-90s it was an incredibly fast developing city, with lots of interesting solutions, great public transport and so on. Of course, Warsaw was not as rich as it is today (now it is one of the richer regions of the EU - in 2021 the GDP of Warsaw alone was equal to 80% of the GDP of all of Ukraine), but the attitude of people to it was similar to what it is today (a human being like an individual, citizen, customer - is the most important, and the city, state, shop - are to improve his life). They have always cared about their city and life in it. There were no such contrasts as in Chisinau (ostentatious wealth alongside deep poverty). In Polish cities, both the city center and distant districts develop similarly, they are all cared for. The first years of the transformation from communism (1989-1994) were difficult, but each year was strikingly better than the previous one, and changes were happening quickly.

Hi. Interesting observation. I'll tell you this. You are right, I myself can see how many matters can be settled on-line. The pandemic sped up a lot. However, as for the ease of running a business, there is still a lot ahead of us. The company can be settled in one counter in about an hour (there are special business incubators. You enter with basic documents and arrange service of several state offices and courts with one person). Difficulties appear later. The tax system. It is very complicated. There was a reform last year. 700 pages of the new law. And then a dozen more corrections because there were a lot of mistakes. The accountants and tax advisers had no idea how to solve the problem. It was so hard. But it seems to be slowly getting back to normal. But that's our biggest problem. This blocks our further development. For complicated tax law. But I hope that in the coming years they will simplify it as well. Because as a 37-year-old I can see how much it has changed in the last 10-15 years.

I started my business in Poland without leaving my apartment and actually, I never visited any gov office :). When you have your "trusted profile" which you can create by connecting it to your bank account (to confirm your identity) you can do almost everything online filling out premade forms and signing them by your trusted profile (profil zaufany). On the other hand, there is still much complicated stuff around taxes and social security (ZUS). I truly hate it and I hope that someday it will change.

To be honest as a Polish citizen from Gdańsk I'm kinda happy it is still underrated. Aside from all the downsides I love my country, but the fact that it gets noticed more and more, makes things like prices of houses, cars and other goods increase in a much bigger rate than our pay, because foreign investors can still afford it. That's why more and more people are forced to either rent, or move out of the bigger cities to afford the living and it's something I'm constantly trying to avoid. Anyway, great video and a sub for You!

Hi James thanks for a great vlog. Poland as many post soviet countries was deeply corrupt, and put a lot of effort to get rid of corruption. I am not telling that they were 100% successful but they are very clear in their message. After the 91 there were the years of ruthless capitalism which were not very pleasant, and then Poles were allowed to go to EU and gather experiences. They were very smart about that and brought back views on what is good as well as on what is not so good out there. I think that gave them opportunity to avoid some of the mistakes through the pioneers in the west had to go to get where they are now.

I agree with most of the stuff you said about Eastern Europe (bureaucracy, customer rights, etc). However, as someone from a Western European country, some services work better in Eastern Europe. For instance, Internet is much cheaper and you can buy a SIM card with unlimited data in less than 10 minutes, whereas in my country you would need a lot more time. Same goes for WiFi installation: the technician might take a few days or a week to even show up, fixing problems is a slow process, while in Eastern Europe you can have it done within the same day. This also applies to healthcare (especially private), most Eastern Europeans who live in my country go to their home country to get medical check-ups and dental care, it's so much cheaper and faster.

I'm Polish. I used to think that Poles were complex. We are Slavs, but we betrayed "Great Ruthenia" over a thousand years ago. We didn't want to be East. We didn't want to be pagans or Orthodox. We wanted to be the West. To be Slavs with a Latin alphabet, Catholic faith and a king who listens to the Pope in Rome, not Constantinople, Kiev or Moscow. That's why we are weird, we are often drunk, we drink coffee with ravens (see KZfaq), bears are corporals in our army, we chase beavers in the street, and we sell a song about drugs to a cactus toy for children. But we want to be free. We want to live. We want a country that will be ours. A world where no one tells us how to live. A world where no one will teach us democracy. Because we had the election of a king. When other countries had absolute power and burned "witches" at the stake. Do you want to live and work? Here you are. We invite. You don't like pierogi and you don't like Poland? Fuck off and good luck.

I love that the first things you point out to us are the amazing balconies! Can you tell us about the scooters I see here and there on your walks? Maybe you’ve already explained and I missed it. They don’t look like they’re locked up, so why are they not stolen? I counted at least 8 in this video. How is your sweet “lady?” She must be close to full-term by now. Take care, and I wish you all the best.

Now it is for sure good to live in Poland, but in years 1945-1989 we had eastern, soviet nightmare. In years 1946-1950 my grandpa had a small restaurant in northern Poland. His business was killed by tax officials. He died in age 40 just after he got a huge tax fine ( because state fought with a private businesses...).

Last night I was looking in KZfaq for the coverage, in English, of December 1981. I thought that's when it was and it looks like that is when it was. I just walked past it in my living room on the news, worried verbally that Russia was going to get mad, and really pissed off my half Polish roommate. Maybe that's why I remember. There was a lot of stuff that it was too late at night to watch it. I really have to go to sleep. But I plan to. At least I know how to find it again. Because everything I look up now, gives me current day American news about Poland and that isn't what I'm looking for, Good as it is with all the praise for helping Ukraine Sorry about your grandfather

For sure, country is build by nation. Poland was build by Polish nation and their huge effort to live better and not go back to Soviet times. Everything which you see was not granted for free. 30 years ago Poland was a typical eastern european country: poor, with backwards infrastructure and generally full of unfriendly people and badly organized administration. It's been changing gradually over the years and it's so much better now. It means there is hope - for every country and it is possible to imrpove a lot within one generation. I highly recommend a book "why nations fail" - they captured pretty well a few key factors why some countries are more successful than others.
