You have gifted us with an insightful review of Polar Grit X. Currently, I use Polar HR 10 Blue-tooth paired to my Samsung Note 8. Viewing heart zones in real time is quite motivating. At 75 years, I prefer Nordic walking rather than trail running. My younger daughter Ivana and I have walked some splendid trails together in nearby parks (western Montgomery County in Pennsylvania).

Excellent review! I've had the watch now for 3 weeks and I really like the overall training and recovery data and how well Polar is using it in it's own ecosystem. I came from Suunto's ecosystem (had the Suunto 7 and Suunto Spartan Sport WHR before the Grit X) and I have to say that Polar is lightyears ahead of Suunto in that department. I've also used Polar's FitSpark training suggestion (mainly the Cardio ones, for strenght and stretching I have my own) and I've developed in running more in 3 weeks with this watch than 3 years with my Suunto watches. Obviously it's not Suunto's fault in anyway, don't get me wrong, they make excellent watches but they are lacking advanced recovery data which is then utilized in various training suggestions. I'd say that most of the people like me need something like this to help them progressing in their training.

Got the watch for the same period as you, my only complaint is the battery. GritX is advertised as a watch for ultra trail runners etc but every 4-5 days I 've got to charge it. Another two cons are the slow sync process and the lack of notifications during a training session. Of course, this polar watch remains more accurate in GPS and hr metrics than the almost double price garmin fenix 6 pros. In addition, I wouldn't go with the plasticky and pricier garmin 945. A honest review, well done Matt!

@@Nomisteaks80 - I grew up in Alabama. I don't have too thick of a southern accent but I'm sure there's some issues there that are annoying. Another thing that can be a bit of a trigger is the way that the videos some times come off unnatural because I'm reading details about a specific watch. Never loved to run on roads. Even then I was training for half triathlon, I always used to run in forests on trails. Hello, i bought the watch and came back to your review just to hear about swimming mode. On my watch it is doesn' t work. Open watter swimming - about 1km and watch measured 50m. I tried it again and result was the same. I think my old M430 did this better... or am i doing something wrong?
@mlegrand
@mlegrand 3 жыл бұрын
Wow, I have no idea why it would be off that much. I actually had really good good results with this watch compared to the Garmin watches that I was testing it against. I would make sure you're using the Open Water Swimming profile and then make sure that the watch finds GPS satellites before starting. I'm guessing you've already done that which makes me think that the watch might have some sort of issue and it might be worth talking to Polar about. Keep me posted on anything you learn. It's always good to have more real world feedback on these watches. Both good and bad. 👍🏻

Great review! A quick question: How do you assess the all-day calorie estimation on this device compared to the Ignite and Vantage series? Unrealistically genorous all-day calorie readings seems to have been a much discussed issue online with the aforementioned watches.
@mlegrand
@mlegrand 3 жыл бұрын
That’s their Smart Calories feature? I think any of these types of calorie estimates are going to be interesting to glance at and maybe motivational but I don’t take it too seriously. I know a lot of people try to take Garmin’s VO2 max numbers seriously but these estimations are just that, estimations. I would expect them to be pretty far off from reality.

I learned to love how to run trails during lockdown - I discovered parts of my hometown that I didn't even know existed, so much nature around here! I do have to mind my ankles, though - I tend to roll them fairly quickly, and while in my twenties this wasn't a big deal, now that I'm pushing forty... It makes for some hobbling the next day. How would you rate the GPS reception in wooded areas? My watch seems to fluctuate quite a bit speed-wise, which seems to indicate it having trouble locking on to the satellite signal.

For what it’s worth. I was an early adopter of the Vantage V. I loved it. I switched to a 945 6months ago only because of the Stryd integration which is much better with Garmin. Like night and day. Other than that, I miss my Polar on an everyday basis. Hardware is great, app is just straight to the point and I never had a single bug with the watch. Plus sleep tracking is class leading. I am still very tempted to switch back to Polar and I would go for the Grit.

I haven’t used Suunto yet. I’ll have to reach out to them. Coros also just announce the Pace 2 which looks nice for the price. This Grit X is excellent and then there are rumors that Garmin is going to announce something soon (745) I haven’t compared the Fenix to the Grit X but my friend Dave over at Chase The Summit has. I had issues with the barometric pressure gauge breaking in the 935. Other than that it was a great watch. Without going through all the comments, you mentioned the water temperature, true (for whatever reason) Polar doesn't offer an on-the-fly way to display the temp, but it does record it into the file and it's viewable in Flow if you turn on that metric (off by default). Would love to win this! One other thought, you mention it being the "best so far for triathlon from Polar" (reader's digest)... in what way(s) is it better than a v800, for that specifically? I know it's added a lot of other (potentially extraneous) features, but in the regard of tris, I haven't seen any reason to consider it higher than (or a replacement for) a v800 thus far (GPS isn't as accurate, and HR depends on "optical" rather than strap sensor recording while in water, plus the form factor I'd consider less "wetsuit friendly" for pulling on/off wetsuits (the relatively smooth surfaced/profiled v800 was ideal for this). Other than that, great video, thank you, and I do think of the post-Vantage era designs, this seems to be by far the best package. To the specific question, haven't done a ton of trail running (not counting our lakeshore gravel trail) but really do enjoy it when I do (I prefer mountain-biking on the trails, LOL, so given 2 hours to do one or the other, the MTB wins usually). have done some in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Palo Duro canyon in Texas though.
@mlegrand
@mlegrand 3 жыл бұрын
Chris, excellent point on the wetsuit form factor. I think I only wore this with a wetsuit once as the water started to get warmer over the past 2 months or so. I still think it has so many little features like fueling reminders that I'd consider it over some of Polar's other offerings. It just feels like a better daily watch if that makes sense. I think I said Polar's best watch thus far. I do expect Polar to make something more triathlon specific. And I'm sure they'll incorporate a lot of these changes into whatever's next. If they do, I'll try my best to get something and test it. (although open water might get tricky here soon 😬). You're entered for the watch. Also, thanks so much for taking the time to watch and provide meaningful feedback. I really do appreciate it!

The Grit X feels like a nicer watch with a higher build quality. The software on the watch is similar between the two but the battery on the Grit X is better. I still think the Grit X is a great watch and I don’t know if any upcoming updates to this watch. I would pick between the size and weight. If you like smaller, M2. @mlegrand
@mlegrand 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. Probably lower price, lower power consumption. Maybe it’s just trending towards more and more devices. For example cell phones all have Bluetooth but very rarely have Ant+. And that would tend to lower costs a good bit. Ant+ does have some advantages but it seems like all of the devices need to at least have Bluetooth.
