Model Roundup: www.modelroundup.com/Plan-9-F...
Plan 9 from Outer Space is a 1959 American independent black-and-white science fiction horror film written, produced, directed and edited by Ed Wood, starring Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson, and "Vampira" (Maila Nurmi), and is narrated by Criswell. The film also posthumously bills Bela Lugosi as a guest star (silent footage of the actor had actually been shot by Wood for another, unfinished film just prior to Lugosi's death in August 1956). Other guest stars are Hollywood veterans Lyle Talbot (who claimed that he never refused any acting job) and former cowboy star Tom Keene. Plan 9 from Outer Space was released theatrically in 1959 by Distributors Corporation of America (then credited as Valiant Pictures).
The storyline concerns extraterrestrials who are seeking to stop humanity from creating a doomsday weapon that could destroy the universe. The aliens implement "Plan 9", a scheme to resurrect the Earth's dead, referred to as "ghouls". By causing chaos, the aliens hope the crisis will force humanity to listen to them. If not, the aliens will then destroy mankind with armies of the undead. The film was originally developed under the title Grave Robbers from Outer Space, but its financial backers objected to this title, which they saw as being sacrilegious, and it was retitled Plan 9 from Outer Space prior to production.
Plan 9 from Outer Space played on television in relative obscurity until 1980, when authors Harry Medved and Michael Medved dubbed it the "worst film ever made" in their book The Golden Turkey Awards. Wood and his film were posthumously given two Golden Turkey Awards for Worst Director Ever and Worst Film. It has since been retroactively described as "The epitome of so-bad-it's-good cinema"[2] and has gained a cult following.

Have to agree Joe. We live in the age of competitive "super realism" compared to how things were and we're putting the money and man hours into kit building. But I bet it was more fun when we were kids and weren't so uptight.

It's the kit they used in the movie. Back when it was Lindberg's kit. They didn't use the engines and they painted over the dome. This is pretty well known.

I got the original Lindberg model for Christmas in 1957, when I was 7. The saucer was cast in gray. In the kit, the alien pilot was cast in a light green, and each engine had an exhaust flame made out of transparent red fluorescent plastic, about an inch or so long, which had a socket that fitted over the rear "rod" at the back of each engine. None of the recasts have this feature.

After watching this, I ordered my own copy of this model. I was curious to what that chrome paint could really do, or was it some sort of behind the scenes mastery from the master?!? I must say....I was blown away at the results of that paint. This will be my new go-to paint when painting Air Force jet/planes, etc. No Hogwarts spells needed to make this stuff shine!! If I can make it work, anyone can!! Thanks!!

Cool Model for sure...Great post. I like your enthusiasm, and it's clear that you truly love to build. Really liked your build... I love modeling... And I like that you encourage others to put their own twist on it if they want, but at the same time, you also explain how u did your particular kit. There are a handful of modelers out there who pick apart some people builds, ( me for one, so I pulled all my builds) by pointing out what they screwed up or just an overall negativity in general. I'm with you it should be fun no mater what level your at. I'm gonna see if I can't find it on Ebay. Thank you, I subscribed.

Here's a tip for anyone who uses the Tamiya paint stands. You can cover the lower base in Glad Press N Seal when the stand is new. You can easily punch holes thru the seal and then paint away. After a while, peel away the Press N Seal and add a new layer. That way, you won't get a massive build up of paint over time. The other part of the stand doesn't really need this treatment since you're generally painting a car body and aiming at the car more than the stand, so you don't get the same level of build up.

Kinda funny that the aliens in the pictures of the movie don't look at all like the alien in the kit. lol. It's actually a nice kit. I was surprised of the finish that that chrome paint give. Seems even better than Alcad. And yeah, for a cheap paint company, it's pretty awesome. I mean, here in Canada, they're sold around the 6$ mark, while car paint and model kit paint sell 'round the 10$ mark. I'm about to try this paint company on a car I'm gonna make. And since I'm finding the color to my liking albeit a little too pale, I wanna try your black primer trick. Hopefully, it'll give me the color I seek.

2 things. Do you need to spray a primer before the actual chosen color? 2nd...that chrome color on the can says its not for spraying on plastic! Is that true? Have you had any issues after painting with a spray paint not made for plastic? It looks sweet, just concerned about the paint not for plastic.

So far no, but it does scuff if you are rough with it.

How do you get so many models built and filming? Are you building multiple models at the same time in various stages? And where do you keep them all? They are not small like Hot Wheels. Keep them coming.

I just work fast, one kit from start to finish. I store most of them in cabinets or sealed storage boxes, and give others away.

Quick question? Did you coat this in Future? I built this model and absolutely love it!! One of my faves!

Just the glass dome.

Also, how would you paint the clear dome? Primer then paint?

How long did it take for the Rustoleum chrome paint to cure so you could handle it? That’s a scary proposition because I’ve ruined silver coatings because of their lack of durability! And of course my constant handling of the subject doesn’t help. Oh yeah, and I agree about the clear coats! No matter how glossy the clear coat is, it’s not as shiny as the base coat itself! Is that rattle can paint that durable?

I let it dry a day, it stayed softer than average color coats so it took longer. I can handle it now without issues. I have no idea how durable it is because I don't play with my kits, but for display and assembly it's been fine. Just used it on another review coming up this weekend and weathered over it with no ill effects.

I had the original which was glow in the dark. Great tutorial! So the gloss black was the primer? Just curious.

No gloss, flat black primer.

What happened to the top part at the front of the left engine? Is that a defect int he plastic or a paint glitch? BTW, great job on a cool model!

Thanks for watching! It's just a paint defect that I wasn't going to try to fix and ruin the rest of the chrome.
