In this video, Benj Haisch compares the classic instant film options from Polaroid Originals & Fujifilm’s Instax Square using a vintage Polaroid 600 Business Edition 2 and the modern Fujifilm Instax SQ6.
A few notes in addition that I’ve noticed since making the video, the Instax SQ6 seems to do a fantastic job of metering when the flash is fired. No need for exposure compensation at all.
For those looking for a definitive answer between the two, my lean would be toward the Instax Square. The cost is low and you get twice the amount of exposures for the money.

Maybe in 30 years an Instax photo shot today will have that “vintage” look that 30 year old Polaroids shot in the 70’s have. Many of the early Impossible photos I shot are unstable and have become muddy and faded. I’m hoping Polaroid Originals has overcome rapid fading. I understand that lots of people want the vintage look immediately. But, it would be great if PO could make a daylight accurate film and let time decide how vintage it will appear.

For sure, that’s one of the things that is great about Instax. It’s really clean and accurate. Polaroids Originals are a bit all over the place.

This video is amazing and exactly that I was looking for. I have an old Polaroid but the film is just way too expensive to shoot regularly, and I was curious about the instax square. This video is the first I've found that thoroughly objectively compares the two, so thank you!

Thanks for this run through. I just pick up a Polaroid original from a charity shop with no instructions so this is really helpful.

I’m kind of offended by muddy underexposed images, haha. The 3rd image proves that the details in the shadows is worth some brighter highlights. “Vintage” doesn’’t have to mean muddy. Also, the whites being white (like they are in real life) just feels better to me. Thanks for sharing!

I shoot on both polaroid, and Instax square, And while I like polaroid, I just can't afford it anymore. For only 8 shots and wild inconsistencies, For me, isn't worth it anymore. And Light leaks (while it can be neat) aren't my cup of tea. I love that Instax square has that instant development magic Like how a classic polaroid should be.

Thanks for making this. Definitely useful. I thought it was worth noting that Polaroid started making a newer camera the step one 2 I believe. Also has double exposure capabilities and a self timer. A friend of mine just got one and has created some cool images.

Polaroid pictures were never meant to look vintage. The original formula gave much brighter colours, white balance was always correct and they were sharper. Original Polaroid film was also more stable, giving you consistency in the results just like Instax do now. I don’t think Polaroid originals intended the new formula film to look retro. I just don’t think they have figured out how to correct the colours.

Polaroid originals is great and their film is cool! The main issue is the sensitivity towards light and the dependence on the batch you get. Even in the video you saw several stains. That is why I am thinking about getting a SQ6:) Although the vintage feel might be not that prominent. For that I have still my polaroid:)

I never thought of the eye dominance ... I like both the Fuji and Polaroid cameras, but the larger film size is always cool, but I thin the instax color is better, but love the polaroid B&W!!!

I have read that for the instax film you need to set the camera to the dark mode for the colors to not be so blown out.

Have you tried using some CTO or yellow-ish gel over the lens? Would it work or would sq6 adjust wb to it's default white highlights?

I've never seen an impossible project shot survive a year without degrading massively. Some of the images you describe as having a cool 70's vibe look to me like they're a few weeks away from dissapearing completely, see 11:50. Unfortunately these half developed photos are all too common and have a significantly shorter lifespan than the Instax film. A better comparison would be polaroid originals vs instax wide. The wide camera is sorely lacking in features and very unpredictable in terms of exposure but I have shots that look as good today as they did three years ago. Not to mention that they are simmilar (Slightly wider) in size and roughly half the price. The polaroid has the benefit of being the quintessential "in the moment" camera but if you want to hang on to these memories for longer than six months the Instax is the one as far as im concenred. Go for the 300 wide over the square, the extra width has captured many gorgeous sunny days and moody drinking sessions; for my money, bigger really is better.

For sure, the wide camera options are just too big for my liking though for simple memories and fun stuff. I’ve owned a few Wide and Mini Instax cameras over the years but they’ve never really stuck with me. The square is the perfect balance of a classic look and a small enough camera that won’t annoy me to carry.

The thing with Polaroid is that it feels nicer to hold and the way it works is much faster than Instax's. The iconic shutter sound and the quick film ejection is what made it likeable. Also that pop up form factor is a bonus. Instax gives alot better photo quality in general.

I started out my career delivering the workshops for impossible in the UK. So much fun but so much work to get w good image! If you like the boxy 600 cameras they have a few that have a sonar focusing system (the sun 660) if highly recommend them if you want branch out but don’t want to go the whole hog and get an SLR680 or a manual land camera.

Also for what it’s worth the spectra cameras can also do double exposures :) you hold the shutter after the shots take then close it. Open up shoot again and it deject after the 2nd shot.

I just got the OneStep 2 and Im really disappointed in the I-Type film. Looks like garbage compared to my Instax cameras. Has a brownish/red tint and the colors are terrible. I don't call that artistic, I call that garbage. Ive been a professional photographer for 15 years and I wouldn't dare give a client any of the pics that have come out of my OneStep 2. Not to mention you have to baby the film by refrigerating it and hiding it from light and its stupid expensive to shoot. I'll stick with Instax. Oh, and you need awful colors to be "creative"? Interesting....

I doubt you are as experienced or anywhere near as experienced as you are trying to sell yourself as. And I wouldnt shoot any polaroid or instax cameras its a waste of money. I stick with film in 35mm,120, and 4x5 format I almost exclusively shoot those cameras. If I need to use a digital then I have my Fuji which i dont like cause fujis camera profiles look washed out and dull. You do not need to baby any polaroid or instax film. And a pack is $12 its not that expensive. Less than 2 dollars a image is cheap. But not as cheap as photographic film is. It doesnt matter what colors a film or polaroid or whatever you shoot produces, Creative is what you make of it. The work you produce doesnt mean anything if you arent happy with it. Dont hate on something because you dont like it. Others can use it to great effect to produce great images.

@@pilsplease7561 u do have to "baby" it. They say for best results u should leave the film in the fridge/dark place. And film here is $20 (in the US) where the heck are you getting it for $12 ??
