A look at the home of the 351st Bomb Group, during the time frame my Dad was there. Some of my photos married with the help of some home movie footage. My Dad was assigned to the 510th Squadron as an aerial gunner, surviving 35 Missions. I visited the base in 2008 and have more footage to put together.

Thank you so much for this. I lived near Polebrook in 1980's and explored the grounds (where Clark Gable was based) and found the officers mess as well as enlisted mens canteen deep in the bushes and brambles and found a mural of a swing band o the wall. Amazing..wonder if it is still there?

I was there in 2008. I met a local named MARTIN at the old pub in Polebrook gave me a tour of the base. MARTIN had old drawings of the base layout so we were able to locate my dad’s old barracks. Of course all that was left were the outlines of the foundations. It’s great that you found this interesting. It’s awesome that you found the canteen. Did you visit the old museum near the farm office?

My dad was a bombardier on a B-17. He was in the 351st. He was shot down in Aug 44 on the first raid over Berlin after 22 missions. He spent the remainder of the war as a POW in Stalag 3. Where the great escape occurred. He would never talk about what he saw but he said he would never forget his Pilot and friend that died on that run.

Great video to come across today. My grandfather was in the 351st Bomb Group in Polebrook from 1942 through 1944, his name was A.P "Bud" Miller and he was a waste gunner. He would talk about Clark Gable being there and remembers the last mission the Memphis Belle flew.

Pablo Cortes I’ve visited what is left of the base in 2008. It’s has the only surviving wooden hanger In Britain to my knowledge. It is a farm now and there is a tiny museum inside the administrative office.

Thank you very much for this fine video. My uncle flew with the 351st out of Polebrook from September of 1944 until January of 1945, in a B-17 named Mollie Mule with Call Sign TU-F. It was interesting to see several other B-17s with very similar call signs - TU-C, TU-N, TU-T - in the scenes you included. I'm looking for more images and information about the Mollie Mule, and your video was very helpful, showing me how similar planes looked.

Thank you Eric. It’s great that you’re taking such interest. Have you seen the book valor at Polebrook? I had some other videos in my military history playlist, relating to my dads service with the 351st. I visited the airfield in 2008. My dad was with with 510 squadron. My motorcycle has the tail number to his aircraft on the front fender.

@@MarkKratzMC I haven't seen that book - thank you for telling me about it. I'll have to search for a copy. I want to make a trip to Polebrook some day with my cousin Carl, who is Leon's son. Carl lives in Wales and has already been to the Polebrook memorial - we are searching out more info on Leon's service together. It is hard to believe Leon was just 22 years old on those first missions. My mother was born two years before him and just celebrated her 102nd birthday. I gave her a list of Leon's missions from September 1944 to January 1945 and she was thrilled. I wonder if Leon and your father ever met? It's certainly possible.

My dad Wendell A Kratz arrived around April 44 and was also with the 510 bomb squadron. His original crew crashed prior to takeoff on Presque Island Maine, where he lost half of his original crew.his Aircraft was called the “devils mistress”.

Upon further review... Our dad's flew 14 common missions together, (although in different B-17's). Three of those were Berlin raids. Misions: 121, 122, &155 from Polebrook. I have several original photographs of a Berlin raid my dad was on which I need copy you on. It is an absolute certainty that Wendell was "present" when these were taken, although 5 miles up and a likely few planes over. The Tiergarten and Reichstag, are cleary visible alongside bombs raining down and assorted flak bursts below. (p.s. several fellow aviators were common crewmates of our dads.) It is also a certainty our dads knew each other. More later...I need your email address.

Timothy Martin Timothy, my grandfather was in Polebrook around this time, and flew on Devil’s Mistress - depicted early in Mark’s video. I’ve been compiling documentation and photographs for a few years now about his experiences and Polebrook. Do you have a site where you’ve posted the information you’ve referenced? I’d love to be able to see it as well. I can be reached at joshua.cagney@gmail.com

@timothy martin @mark kratzMC Just stubbled upon this video! My grandfather flew with the 510th from October of 43 to Sept. of 44. flying 9 missions with Marks dad and 8 with Timothys though never on the same aircraft. Looks like all 3 were T/T gunners. He spoke very fondly of his time at Polebrook and I grew up listening to his war stories. He always said if he knew he wouldn't got shot or killed he'd do it again in heartbeat.
