Is the Polestar 2 as good as a Tesla? Christian Elvidge carries on looking through the current crop of electric cars on offer this week reviewing the Polestar 2.
The Polestar 2 starts at £39,990. According to Polestar they claim it will do 335 miles on one charge. The 0-62 dash is 7 seconds. We want to find out if this under the radar electric car is a viable option over other electric cars on the market.
We loved the Polestar 2..... but watch to the end to hear what is wrong with the infrastructure in the UK currently and why electric cars aren't quite there yet for long journeys and mile munching.

We loved the Polestar 2, the infrastructure in the UK is not quite there yet unfortunately for a few of us that have to do long journeys on a regular basis, but we are sure it will get there eventually! We'd love to know what you think?

@@SliceUK Oversimplification. Polestar 2 is beautiful and well put together. But... less efficient, less roomy than a Tesla and the infrastructure as discussed in the video, still leaves a lot to be desired, and the app that still is being improved a year after launch! I almost went for the P2 but now glad I did't as the long journey charging anxiety is non-existent and the car is fun to drive.

@@molepatrol7529 tesla have the infrastructure I'll give you that. But for me polestar beats it on everything but quickness and charging ability when out and about. Tesla set the bar now watch every other company take over with style of vehicles. Which is why tesla are about the share their charging points with others as they know there is money to be made

@@SliceUK their battery efficiency is better than p2 and their app is better. They set the bar and polestar just copied their online ordering style and is the benchmark. Kia and Hyundai are gatecrashing the market. The sharing of chargers is something which will have to be introduced with the Tesla owners having some form of preferential treatment.

Nice review. Wood is not faux wood. It's recycled wood. A lot of the car's interior, the seats, the vents in the back, the steering wheel and the knobs on it, are exactly like the XC40. if you drive an XC40 Recharge (all electric), you'll see the car is similar but with a much less sporting, though still firm, suspension. Polestar seems to be doing well with updates but they can't update infrastructure. That's something that has to be worked out country by country. It's not good in the USA either.

Spot on review of the charging facilities. Tesla is not my dream car but having owned an i3s for nearly 2 years I know the value of the tesla superchargers. It's the single biggest advantage of that car for me. Plus it has the longest range out of them all!

The map glitches you mentioned in the video is due to a bug with Google maps if your test of the car was in November. This has now been fixed.

To me if you own an electric car. You plan your stops properly at decent charge points. And if you are on a long journey why leave on 80% with a car that goes 270 miles. You're doing 200 mile trip on 80% it's not going to be done.
@Motorflix
@Motorflix 2 жыл бұрын
I understand what you are saying but I don’t plan a journey in a normal car for where the Petrol stations are. Nor should I have to in an electric one. That shouldn’t have to be the case, as when everyone supposedly is going to have an electric car what are we going to do about the amount of chargers. There was only one at each charging station. If everyone has an electric car there is going to be a queue of hundreds of cars. Just based on the shear volume of cars on UK roads. I don’t deem 165 miles to be a long journey, I know others might, but if the car says it has 200 miles and I have 165 miles to go why would I not do that? If my other normal cars said they had that range that is the range they would do. Admittedly I am not set up at home for an electric car as I do not have the right charger as these are press cars that I only have for a week at a time so that would have alleviated some of the pain I am sure.

@@Motorflix so what you really want is the petrol and diesel car industry to be the same as electric which you aren't going to get until the market catches up. Electric is on the up. On the app I use there are many chargers to choose from at high charge speeds. But this is why you have to plan. I get petrol and diesel cars you don't need a plan. But you doo need to plan a stop if you are looking to full up the car at a cheaper petrol station than a services. Or on long journeys you plan a stop in for a services break or a rest break so why is electric stop any different.

@@SliceUK Isn't that what we all want? To be able to keep up our way of life? I appreciate that isn't going to happen for sometime. That just reaffirms my point that the infrastructure doesn't quite work yet for the persons doing long journeys in electric cars. I totally agree that electric is on the up, I am still not sure it is going to be the end goal that all cars will be electric. Synthetic fuels and hydrogen are also on the up but further behind electric. Only last week I produced a film for Goodwood KZfaq channel of getting a Mach E all the way to Scotland on one charge. (film will be live in the new year) We managed it (albeit at 45mph the whole way) but on the return journey driving at normal speeds, we didn't necessarily plan the stops, but used the apps to get us back. I was in a Discovery 5 which managed 45mpg, and did 550 miles on a full tank of fuel. I made it back 3 and a half hours ahead of the electric car and only left them half way through the journey at their first recharging stop. I know this is an extreme, but I am just trying to be honest and show everyone at the extreme ends of the spectrum the electric car and the infrastructure is still flawed. I hope you realise I am not arguing with you at all I am challenging the electric car argument, which I think highlights good and bad things about both electric and combustion cars. There is no doubt in my mind that the electric car has come on leaps and bounds since the G Wiz and will only carry on getting better. I am waiting for a manufacturer to build an affordable, fun, small, rear driven, 300hp (ish) sports car, as I think in that guise an electric power unit could be an absolute hoot.

The range display is referred to by us polestar drivers as the guessometer as it a calculation based on the WLTP range and state of charge. It is useless in the real world and horrendously overestimates . However google maps is incredibly accurate at telling you how much charge you’ll have left at your destination ( never out more than1%) so on a long trip when you’re not sure, even if you know where you’re going and don’t really need routing, you put the destination in and it will tell you if you’ll make it or not. Clearly that doesn’t help the infrastructure issue but at least you know if you can get there or not. Plus , when you charge, it tells you when you have enough real world juice to set off again. This is true wether it’s summer or winter, rainy or fair. It’s really good.

I drive a Chevy Bolt, which has a much slower DC fast-charging time than the Polestar and even slower, still, compared to a Tesla or Ioniq 5. 95% of the time I charge at home and that works fine for me. Long trips require more planning, but I save a lot of time when not on a road trip by charging at home. There's a give and take. Once they charge faster and have a little longer range, with more ubiquitous charging stations, many more people will fit with an EV. Personally, I'll never go back to an ICE car. I'm picking up a Polestar 2 in a few days.

Seems like you charge at Tesla superchargers with a Tesla but at trickle chargers with the Polestar. Not a very fair comparison. You should use the navigation, which will suggest charging stops at fast chargers (150kw +) along your route. It will now also preheat your battery to ensure the best charging speeds in the Polestar. Obviously, at Morrison's or other commerce parking lots it's a very slow charge, for Tesla or Polestar.
@Motorflix
@Motorflix 2 жыл бұрын
I used the Nav, 2 of the charging points were apparently “fast chargers” turned out they weren’t very fast, but were the closest I could get to. I appreciate more planning would be better, but time in my life planning trips is wasted time. I am lucky that I have a Tesla fast charger near me. Even still it is a fair comparison as that is how my life works. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@Motorflix We both know your title is for clickbait purposes. However, to add a little more reasoning to why I called it out. If I'm buying an iPhone I probably wouldn't want to hear thousands of mentions from another brand. You are doing a disservice to the car by comparing it to something else right from the get-go. Instead of seeing it for what it is. If you want to do a comparison section, then go ahead that's fine. But I doubt you would go naming your titles like "BMW 2 series gran coupe, Is it as good as an Audi?"
@Motorflix
@Motorflix 2 жыл бұрын
Of course it is as it is a direct rival….. and of course it is clickbait I want people to see the title, click on the film, watch it, like it etc. As it took me many many hours to make a film for free for everyone’s enjoyment and to help them make a decision as to what to buy as that is part of my job. 🤷🏻‍♂️ If you were buying an iPhone surely you’d want to know if it was better than it’s closest rival? Of course if I were reviewing an Audi S3 I would ask the question of “is it as good as an M140i”
@AW-gj4ji
@AW-gj4ji 2 жыл бұрын
@@Motorflix I'm afraid your title just makes it seem like you have biases. If I needed to know about a rival I would rather look up on a video about it. That way I could analyze in details and I believe as a content creator you could from having a video lead to another one. Although, not everyone thinks like I do. I have very little interest in sitting through a biased review or what I determine as a potential biased review. If you believe your naming is more beneficial to your channel than carry on. This is my opinion as someone who regularly look up on car review videos.
