Polestar is now arranging for test drive cars to be dropped off at your home. We recently bought a Mustang Mach-E but we wanted to see how it stacks up against the Polestar 2.
Although we only had a short test drive, it was enough to give us a good idea about the Polestar 2. Some of the highlights for us were the acceleration and the Android Automotive system. We also check out the Polestar 2's storage, interior, overall driving dynamics, and road noise.
Watch the whole video and let us know what you think.
And if there are other EVs you want us to test drive, mention them in the comments!

Really great review, and "unbiased" despite your caveats. You point out a lot of things that are for sure personal preference, instead of positioning them as faults. I prefer the P2 because it's smaller, more "car like" than the MachE, and has that cockpit feel with the centre console. But all your counterpoints were super valid, especially as it relates to your specific needs. Saw the two of you on the Out of Spec road trip vids and now you're popping in my feed with this. Not a Mach-E person but will follow your stuff for sure. Cheers.

I'm an early adopter of the Polestar 2 and have been driving it for more than three months. I think your review is balanced and fair. The center console doesn't bother me, but it does bother others. The sign recognition is a known problem, but they should fix that with an OTA update. I think people really should cross shop the Polestar and the Mach E. It's good to have some solid choices out there.

Nice review guys. Thanks. I test drove a Polestar 2 in October 2020 in England. I have no recollection of bashing my knees on anything. Maybe we move differently Liv so this isn't an issue for me. I also thought the build quality was of a very high standard and I liked the vegan materials used for the passenger compartment. As a driver, I doubt I would be sitting there feeling the materials but I thought they looked good. The driving experience was really good with a nice range of steering and driving setups. Loved the 1 pedal driving and got used to that very quickly. The car I drove did have the Performance Pack added (gold seatbelts, break calipers, and adjustable Ohlins shock absorbers for an extra £5,000 (about $6,900)) which was set up with a harder ride, which I prefer. I saw the Mach-E in Marble Arch, London, in January 2020 (before virus overdose) but wasn't able to drive it (cars were left-hand-drive and even journalists were being taxied around in it by Ford employees). Yes, the Mack-E is very much larger than the Polestar 2. Looked like a bit of a tank while walking around it. I thought the internal design and materials looked good, but as I didn't get in I can't comment on the seat comfort or other ergonomics of the cabin. I intend to test drive the Mach-E when lockdown and vaccinations are done.

I'd love to hear your personal thoughts once you test the Mach-E! They both certainly have different vibes and aesthetics and there were definitely things I liked about the Polestar 2. Ya I didn't realize I get in a car that way either! Haha, yet every time I banged my leg! I'd be really interested to see if other people do that too. So in essence you wanted a bigger car? I picked a P2after driving basically loads of EV’s and picked it because it also reminded me of a WRX STI. I was actually happy that it had a more traditional center console and to me the P2 is the most ‘natural’ driving EV I tried. The Tesla Y and 3 felt like appliances. That said there are so many great choices now that everyone can find something that fits. They all seem good!

You don't have to push/pull the gear lever twice to go from N to R or D. You can just push/pull it once all the way (in either direction). The center console is a divider (pun intended) for many people, but it's not as big an issue as many would have it. The review is clearly somewhat biased (as fresh owners of the Mach-E, that's to be expected), but that's fine. Everyone should try for themselves before deciding. People commenting that they'd avoid this car based on this review are making a decision based on too little data.
@MachE_VLOG
@MachE_VLOG 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, exactly!! If people are about to invest $60,000 in a car, they should test drive the options. I tried not to be biased in this video, but really there isn't anyway to do that. I've already become used to the Mach-E and I'm excited by my purchase. If I didn't need an SUV size vehicle and there was a service center near us for Polestar, it might have been more of a consideration. I even wanted to test drive it before I bought the Mach-E but they only recently began doing that in Denver.

I do like the screen directly in front of you, looks bigger and has more information? I like that you can have the map right there. That middle center console makes the inside look cramped for sure. Quick question about the Mach E, when you get in, is it like a sedan or an actual SUV? I can never tell, it's sold as an SUV but seems short? I am asking from a back prospective if that makes sense. I want a higher car than what I have now. (Nissan Altima) I also like how you describe the boom box as if it was on your shoulder, ah memories...lol.

The driver's screen was definitely a plus for the Polestar - especially with the map. The Mach-E is definitely is in the middle between a sedan and SUV. And I'd say it is closer to SUV than sedan. Liv has a RAV4 and it is pretty similar to that.

Good comparison. Thank you. I do like the look of the Polestar 2 and I did consider one, before I finally decided on a Tesla Model 3 Long Range, for various reasons. I've never sat in a Polestar, but I think I would like the cockpit feel given by the large centre console. One thing I could not excuse was that in spite of such a large console the placement of the cup holders was completely ridiculous. One cup holder is placed way too far back and the second one is behind that, UNDER the centre arm rest! Dumb. Apart from that, it is always reported as a well built car. Has a few software and charging glitches that should get sorted out over time.

In the Performance version, you can adjust the suspension with *tools*; it isn't adapatable. The MME GT will have adaptable suspension. At the end of the day, the decision of Polestar and Volvo to *not* have Volvo dealerships in the U.S. service the Polestar 2 (they will in the U.K.) means that any service will be inconvenient at *best* (if you live near one of the few cities where Polestar has set up its centers).

We cancelled our Polestar 2 order after we found out there's still no SiriusXM or CarPlay at ALL currently. They're supposed to add it at some point but no exact timeline. We love and use both these features everyday so that plus the terrible service model (of needing to either drive to, or have the car towed to, a Polestar Space) was a deal breaker for us. Also, only 1 regularly availabile cupholder was the dumbest of all design choices and part of me says I would've canceled my order just because of that 😁

One of many reasons I did not get a Model Y was lack of Apple CarPlay integration. I love that on my Mach-E and would not buy a car with out it. One of the things that the EV's have done is made the smartphone an integral part of using the car. Like phone as key. Would be great if you could spend some time on the phone apps for the cars you test. Wireless connectivity top the home network and internal car hotspot. Just a thought. Since most are going to Android Automotive OS the differences in the car would be intersting.

Hi guys, nice review. I recognized I-25 and Evans. The Polestar 2 and Ford Mach-E are high on my list of an all EV to get later this year. My biggest problem in putting in an order for the Mach-E, which I'm told now needs to be done 6-8 months in advance, is that I cannot arrange for a test drive. I have called around to the local Ford dealers, and I'm told that the cars coming in are already sold and there isn't one on the lot to test drive. Even if a Mach-E does come in that isn't claimed, the dealers tell me that they probably won't offer it for test drives because that would put unnecessary miles on the car. My experience with the Polestar was totally different. I went online, set up an appointment for a test drive and even had the car brought to my house. I ended up getting in a good 2-hour drive with the car, and the Polestar person who accompanied me was very knowledgeable and helpful. Some quick comments about the review. First, I'm currently driving a Volvo XC-60 T8, so the layout of the front center console, including its size, is very similar to the XC60. The traffic sign reader works the same. As long as the sign is a standard black on white, the reader works every time. I like that the traffic sign icon flashes when you go over the speed limit. I didn't find the size of the cabin to be too small or confining. The seats were comfortable during the 2 hour drive. I was able to take the car on a number of types of roads, including the Interstate, city streets and even a maintained dirt road that did have a number of pot holes and washboarding. The ride in all cases was smooth and comfortable. I didn't find the cabin noise to be a bother. Maybe because it was very similar to my Volvo. And, I agree, the performance of the Polestar is very good. All-in-all, my driving experience of the Polestar was impressive. And, I really liked using the Android Automotive. Hopefully, I will get to test drive a Mach-E before time expires on placing an order. I just don't see the value in ordering a car 6-8 months in advance and not getting a chance to test drive it until it is delivered to the dealership or after buying it. Thanks again for giving us a most informative review.

Patrick and Liv, another nice, informative video. I have this low on my list of EVs to purchase in the coming year, think I may scratch it off after this video. The price is a bit out of my range to start and what you get for it (that performance) isn’t important to me. I’d be happy with a slower car that is more comfortable to ride in. The bumpiness you reference midway through the video (around 11-12 minutes) isn’t appealing, and the confined feeling with that center console doesn’t sound great. Liv, I’m usually good at placing accents, can’t place yours. Guessing maybe you moved when you were 15 ish, mild accent as a result. Great channel, just subbed.

My accent is a weird one :) I moved to the US from South Africa at 18. So you were really close! Well done, haha! I 100% agree with you. I'd much prefer a slower, more comfortable, more affordable car, personally. We got to spend some time in the VW ID4 today. Just stationary, couldn't drive it....but...I think you might love it, based on your response to the Polestar. Oh my gosh it is so pretty, comfortable, well thought out, and really cohesive! It's more affordable than the Polestar, much more access to dealerships and services, and just waaaay more aesthetically enjoyable. There is SO much thought that went into the cabin. I can't wait to try drive it. Oh and it's about 8.5 seconds from 0-60 vs the under 5 seconds of our Mach-E and the Polestar, which I think is totally fine, personally. - Liv

@@EVexplored Hey Liv, thanks for the answer! It’s a cool accent, couldn’t quite place it because you’ve been here long enough, while young, that it softened. Funny you should bring up the ID4, that’s on my list too. Our younger guy is going to need a car soon so he’ll get my Volt, and I’ll move to full electric. As for the ID4, I’d wait for the all wheel drive (that has more pep, less range). Initially I DQ’d the ID4 based on the (painfully) slow 0 to 60, I’ve always held 7 seconds as a benchmark of decent get out of the way speed. But the comments you made I picked up on so back on my list, other reviewers seem to like it as well (Alex on Autos, Kyle from Out of Spec) I do like the rear wheel drive aspect for handling on the ID4 and would need to test drive. Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai GV60 are a few others on the list. Hopefully you and Patrick can get your hands on these cars and do videos. Mach E is a top contender, also charge port in same spot as Volt so I’m already set up in my garage for it 😃 One thing against, minor, is it’s a bit longer than my Volt while these other cars are basically the same length which I like (fits in my garage better too) Really enjoy both of your review styles, keep up the great content and fun times, cheers!

Yes all center consoles in EVs should really be removable. Put the shifter somewhere on the dash and let the person decide if they want it there or just wide open space. Looking at that thing, it wastes so much space and looks like it was tacked on. Let people unhook it. I do think Hyundai has a good idea in that respect for their upcoming EV. The Mach-e one is classy, but as said no reason to make them permanent fixtures in any EV.

The Polestar 2 is not a ground-up EV design like the Mach E. The Polestar 3 will be. It will not have the obtrusive center console. It will also cost quite a lot of money I think. But it will be an SUV and possibly quite a bit larger than the Mach E. Surprised you didn't find the Polestar 2 to be very solid as I find Volvos, and this is a Volvo design and body, to be very solid. The interior materials are "sustainable." The wood texture is wood, not faux wood. Polestars will indeed have a quite firm ride as they are performance cars. Even regular Volvos ride on the firm side. But what I mean by the Polestar 2 is not a ground-up EV design is it shares with the Volvo xc40. It has the same platform. It's a ICE car that can also be an electric car. So it doesn't have the flat floor or the aerodynamics of a ground-up EV design. This platform will not be used by future Polestars. The Mach E sounds like the perfect car for both of you and overall it's good that Ford did such a good job of executing it. The only issue is they called it a Mustang for truly no reason. Just call it Mach E and have it been part of a new generation of EV Fords. Why compare it to some muscle car of the 60s that is now a muscle car of these times and is a true sports car? Otherwise, it's fine.

Thanks 😅 Liv's is still that color but mine is fading. I'm deciding if I will just let it go or try another color.

Unfortunate about the center console. Not inclusive design for handicapped people. Volvo and Polestar should know better

Haha I will say I liked android automotive, since our phone's have been getting pretty hot using android auto. And I did like the map on the dash screen. Other than that Polestar 2 < Mach-E - Liv

This car and all EV's except Tesla have the same problem. They have to rely on 3rd party charging stations instead of Tesla chargers. In my experience, these 3rd party chargers are very unreliable, costly and relatively hard to find / get to.

That's interesting because from what I have seen, the CCS network has been pretty good. And if you watch my latest road trip video, I charged in some fairly remote locations at very cheap rates. They are super easy to find using the car's navigation system or there are 3rd party apps like PlugShare and A Better Route Planner. The best part is that the CCS network is expanding at a rapid pace. It is the standard for all EVs except Tesla so there is a huge effort by many sources to expand it.

I have to disagree with many and say that the Mach-E is fugly in comparison to the Polestar.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! The Polestar 2 has really grown on me and the software updates make it even better.

The $7500 tax credit you only get when you money on your tax return. So if you don’t owe anything you don’t get a credit.

It is a tax credit. Example: Your employer deducts $10K from your paycheck for federal taxes. You prepare your taxes and it turns out your tax liability was only $8,000. Normally, you'd get a refund for $2,000. But you add in the tax credit and you will get back $9,500.

@@MachE_VLOG Hi. I don't think this is how it works. EV tax credit is NON-refundable. You will receive credit only if you owe money. In your example above, you will actually not benefit from this tax credit at all. You will only get 2000 refund. However, if someone owes 10k at the end of the year, they will only pay 2500 and will take full advantage of 7500 tax credit.

@@aliazeem7945 It is actually. If you believe me or not, it is always best to check with your tax professional.

@@aliazeem7945 Glad it worked out. It is hard to get clear answers and I think everyone is afraid to give concrete tax advice. I had to verify for myself as well because it made a big difference in the purchase of our EV.
