Its been a longtime coming, but we finally got our hands on the new, all-electric Polestar 2. Of course, everyone wants to know, is it better than the Tesla Model 3? Well, Bryan delves under the skin, and drills down to find out in another of our comprehensive road test reviews. Find out what he thought here.

Thnx Bryan for your honest review. As Peter I'm a Dutch Volvo fanboy and I'm so happy to have ordered the P2. Got it now for 2 weeks, no Performance Package, tow hook (yes of course) Drove the PP package but didn't like it, because it's my daily driver and not a track car. Got the 19" rims much more comfortable. Charging network in the NL or Europe isn't a problem, I can charging everywhere with one token. Fastned though is my preferred supplier. And what a beast this car is...........

It seems like most of the UK Press cars have the PP, so good to hear your experience from an owner's point of view without it fitted. Enjoy your car, and well done on an excellent choice!

Definitely an awesome review!! I did the test drive at Farnborough airport a good couple of months ago and I was bowled over by everything with it. Totally agree that I would purchase one over the Tesla model 3. Yes the downside is the stupid key, but think there is an phone app that is being developed that will let you unlock the car. Only negative that I said to the representatives when I test drove it was the colours available. Would love to have the bursting blue that is on the r-design Volvo's. Yes sales network is very limited but believe servicing will be done at Volvo dealerships.
@AutoEV
@AutoEV 3 жыл бұрын
Agree Peter, and as much as I am not a big fan of that blue, I'd have thought it was Polestar's signature colour. Perhaps they are moving away from the past, but seems a shame if they are as the success they saw in motorsport should be celebrated. You are correct about the Volvo dealers for servicing, but only 2 sales outlets so far does limit them too. Still, its an excellent car in our opinion.

Yes, I just feel that the Ohlins are a little bit at odds with the target audience for the car. Volvo used to do a s Stage chassis control on the old S60/V70 R models, and an updated version of this would have been my preference. It still doesn't detract form how excellent the car is mind you!

Comprehensive review Bryan-thank you! One note-you mentioned the dampers are a bit firm for your tastes, is this not adjustable with the Ohlins (albeit, not very convenient)?
@AutoEV
@AutoEV 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Rodd, and apologies for taking so long to get back to you. Yes, the Ohlins are adjustable, but manual only. I'd have preferred them to have fitted electronically adjustable ones, perhaps with just 3 settings, rather than the expensive manually adjustable Ohlins. I understand they can be adjusted via a Volvo dealer however.

Very good review! Although, I would suggest that if you are able to afford a car of this price, you could afford to take it to your local garage and have them work with you and those adjustable shocks to find a ride perfect for you...turning that potential negative into a huge plus!

Great review. I haven't driven either a Polestar 2 or a Tesla 3 or indeed any electric vehicle but I have a feeling that if I was in the market for an EV at this price point then the first car I would want to test drive is the Polestar 2. It looks great and the controls in the cabin seem more conventional to use than those on the Tesla so would presumably be easier to adapt to coming from driving for many years in a petrol engine car? Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy one :-(

Why am I watching this when I have had my P2 for a month? Agree v solid car drives through bumps not over them . Wish the ride was less firm (I’m 65 so more Volvo comfort ambitions) but getting more and more used to it. One downside for me is sweaty back on long trips but wife has no issues. Enjoying more and more and so glad I didn’t get a Tesla (except for the v odd journey when totally envious of supercharger network).

Thanks Bryan for a super channel How does the P2 compare with the IPace? Thanks
@AutoEV
@AutoEV 3 жыл бұрын
What an interesting question Michael, thank you. I'd say that first of all, they are very different car. The I-Pace is a more expensive car, and in some ways, certainly feels it. It doesn't feel over 2 years old now, that's for sure. I think the Polestar 2 offers almost as much at a lower price point (comparing new v's new), and its Google operating system is a big selling point because Jag has had some issue with their infotainment. The Jaguar is quicker, has a touch more practicality, but would it be enough for me to soend another £20k on? I'm not sure it would to be honest. I spec 'my' Polestar 2 without the Performance Pack, so that would bring th eprice down even further. I think on balance, it depends what you need a car for. If you want that psuedo-SUV practicality, the I-Pace is a better car than the Audi e-Tron, Merc EQC and Tesla Model 3, but it is £70k. For under £50k, the Polestar does pretty much everything I'd need a car to do.

@@AutoEV Thanks Bryan I've been lucky enough to have had an IPace for over two years and it's due for renewal/replacement next September. I agree with all you say about it - fabulous car let down a bit by the infotainment, but mine improved noticeably following a recent dealer software update. New models have the brand new Pivi Pro system which seems a further improvement. I don't use all the space of the IPace so am tempted by the P2 for the reasons you mention, and would be interested in your view of their relative refinement, ride comfort and handling (P2 without Performance Pack) Many thanks

Thanks for a good review. Just to point out...harsh ride - adjust the Ohlins (I should point out that I understand that Volvo will adjust them for you for free). Limited dealer network - Polestar is using Volvo to service and repair their cars. The standard car (which hasn't come out yet) will probably have a softer suspension setup. I also suspect that in the future, Polestar will be updateing the control software to allow for longer range, better recharging times and a more efficient use of power. I also think new options for the instrument binnacle will become available (analogue clocks maybe?). I took a test drive in a Polestar 2 a couple of weeks ago in Farnborough. The build quality was very high and the materials used inside was very attractive. The one pedal driving was easy to get used to and it drove really well. This car is currently at the top of my list for my next car.

Yes, we know that the dampers can be softened, but I had to find fault with something! The car is just so good! Joking aside, I have heard from someone who has a car that doesn't have the Performance Pack fitted and he tells me it is a marked improvement on ride quality. I'm sure some buyers will find the PP enjoyable though, and I suspect it will sell more of them with it. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment as well. It's appreciated.

Great car and deffo prefer it to the Tesla 3 But I’d save the £5k and enjoy the more comfortable ride of the standard car and do you really need larger brakes if you’re using the re-gen . Other option or even better , standard fit the better brakes for that renowned Swedish safety 🧐 Also , for me I’d prefer a Start Button, just my peace of mind and lovely when I tried a Jag i-Pace etc, feels more premium 💰 You didn’t mention if it had a heated steering wheel as that’s almost essential with electric cars and saving range instead of using the air heaters ? One mistake also is the use of archaic 60:40 split rear seats. Especially as it’s not a skateboard platform , with batteries in the old transmission tunnel They should’ve fitted 40:20:40 as this is much more practical in the real world . As like lots of folk, the most I’ve had in the tea is another couple That 20 middle split would then be handy for ski trips etc The key is an absolute joke, @Polestar should bite the billet and use a @Volvo key badged as their own I’m not gonna use my mobi as a key 🔑 Pity it’s not available in the classic Polestar colour of Swedish Racing Green 🇸🇪 Keep up the great work of a real person reviewing a car and not just a bored journalist etc 👍🏻 #StaySafe 🦠😷

Hi Brian, I don't think we can go backwards from EV car comparison to now comparing with the plug in hybrids - they are on the chopping block. To me the EV will not be a vehicle you change every 3 years when the PCP comes to an end. This could be a long - life partner as the new batteries do not degrade at the rate they used to and will probably outlast the car now. The polestar is well overpriced considering its country of origin so it will be a rarity on British roads.

Question could should Elon develop carbon catching systems from the air. If yes what uses could Elon use this carbon for. Could he use it in batteries, solar cells or making stainless steel for his rockets and cyber truck etc. What other use do you know or think Elon could use this carbon that is captured from air. Let me know. Could he find a really good use for this material. Also do you think he should build these carbon plants at his factories to of set his carbon footprint. He could start a trend that large manufacturers have to do this. I bet he could get government grants for this

The best thing its got going is the fact that its a hatchback. Other than that, its no where near as good as a model 3 even in bottom spec SR+ form even if we were just talking efficiency.... And that hump through the middle...that was a salesman excuse given here if truth be told...It just was not built as an EV from the ground up and lets just leave it at that. It is what it is.... Its not a bad EV but it does not offer anything that stands out either (sorry spectrum geeks).

This car doesnt have good range, maybe on paper but not in real world, then you said ride is firm well thats why the dampers are grate, you find the optimal firmness for you and dont have to temper with it anymore and then you said limited dealer network, are you kidding me?, there are volvo dealers everywhere, you cant say that for Tesla.
