When is a Volvo not a Volvo? When it's electrified, stuffed with the latest tech and sold through a fancy showroom on Main Street rather than Auto Row. Also when it's made by Volvo's electric subsidiary Polestar. For reasons that are too complicated and tenuous to explain, the Swedes and their Chinese owners decided that the best thing to do was to create a separate company dedicated to sporty, driver-focused electric cars and that's what I snagged for a quick drive today.

@Random KZfaq Watcher @Guided Meditation - Both of you are incorrect. China and the USA have been in a symbiotic relationship for decades. They both need each other. China needs the USA to buy their goods. And the USA needs China to produce the goods. Both countries need each other. And you don't kill your goose that is laying the golden egg. The days of world wars are over. We are all too tied together..which is a good thing. However..if there is a nuclear war it will be between Asian and Middle Eastern countries..such as between Israel and Iran or Pakistan against India. Those countries are not as stable as the USA & China so anything can happen.

Peizxcv it is not mutually exclusive to have billions in sales AND billions in subsidized loans for acquisition financing, interest payments and working capital. The Europeans have been benefitting also from those arrangements. And during their bankruptcies, Ford and Gm also. Without financing, lifeblood runs dry for R&D and acquisitions to increase revenue numbers more than organically. Great review! I'm picking up mine really soon. Here in Norway we get the lowest price for the Polestar 2 in the world, because of no tax at all. Even the wintertires are tax free. Petrol/diesel cars cant compete really with the price. A similarly configured BMW 320d costs here around 86.000 USD, and my PS2 costs 68.000 USD with pilot package, Plus package, performance pack, leather seats and 20" performance winter wheels. Also the monthly costs will be alot less with an electric car. It will even be cheaper for me with this new car rather than my 6 year old 3 series..

I like the Polestar 2. Yes there is a lot of Volvo styling and themes going on, but those are honestly benefits since Volvo has always done the Scandinavian interior thing really well. What Polestar fixed is Volvo's poor infotainment system - being an Android Auto user this feels far more intuitive than what current XC60 & XC90 are running. Also, great to hear Android Auto itself & Carplay is supported, whereas you can't find either in any Tesla products.
@ivanlowjones
@ivanlowjones 4 жыл бұрын
As a Volvo XC90 owner, I have no issues with the infotainment system whatsoever.
@tren133
@tren133 4 жыл бұрын
Android Auto is actually NOT supported. Android Auto lets your android phone run it on top of a car's existing infotainment system, whether it be BMW iDrive, Kia UVO, or whatever. In this case, the Polestar's infotainment system is not the Sense system you get in Volvos, it is actually an android infotainment system, which is very confusingly called "Android Automotive", which is not the same as Android Auto. So if you get the Polestar 2 and have an android phone, the android automotive system will interface with compatible apps in your phone and let you use those apps inside of the existing infotainment system. So similar, but not the same as Android Auto. It should be better actually, since it will be better integrated and you don't have to switch between AA and your base infotainment system like in other cars if you needed to fiddle with some other function, for instance. Carplay will work like other cars, presumably a part of the screen will be given to Carplay when you hook up an iPhone to the Polestar 2. Overall I'm optimistic that this might be the best new car infortainment system going forward. I applaud Volvo and Google for making it versatile and also allow for other OS to be used such as Apple. Unlike Tesla, which is the Apple of car companies, insists on making its infotainment system a walled garden, and not letting you interface it with either Android Auto or Apple Carplay.

Like you have mentioned in your video, you can feel the similarities with Volvo in terms of looks, finish, interior that is alive unlike the Tesla which is bland, boring and drab. This is also reflected in the price of the car and I do not doubt that there is a clientele who wants something 1-better in terms of quality 2-stand out from alllll the OTHER Model 3 owners out there. With my wife’s Volvo, I can talk to a human being if I have questions and I can get a service appointment within a day or so. With Tesla, it took over a week last time. While Teslas are miles ahead on tech, their build quality isn’t great. They aren’t designed well for repair so minor accidents can end up totaling a Tesla. I’ve seen tons of horror stories online.

Just as Jeep is made in the USA but owned by the Italian brand Fiat ! do you consider Jeep an Italian brand ? certainly not, it doesn't matter where a car is made, what's really important is the engineering and where that comes from ! Jeep has its own R&D department, so any new models should maintain its image as being a robust built to last brand, the same for Landrover, owned by the Indian company Tata, but because the company has retained its own designers and engineers, it keeps its own image and distances itself from Tata for obvious reasons, Landrover are also made in Slovakia, China, India as well as the UK, and probably other countries, but we don't consider Landrover to be an Indian brand, or a Slovakian brand because its made in Slovakia !

This vehicle has so much going for it: 1 rear wheel bias 2 fast processing speed and well designed infotainment with just the right balance between on screen and mechanical adjustments 3 Tesla/BMW comparable performance. And decent fit and finish, unlike Tesla. I want the polestar 3! thanks Alex

Volvo is planning to build "tens of thousands" Polestar 2 annually. Tesla is building about 70,000 Model 3 per quarter, that is around 300,000 cars in 2020. This is an order of magnitude more than Polestar 2 is planning to produce. Polestar 2 will complement but not fight with Model 3 for the market.

Just the quality control and the customer service are more than enough to choose polestar over Tesla. You might hear how indifferently when you call Tesla customers service. At least you have Volvo dealers at your neighborhood. I would definitely buy one because its driving feeling like a BMW M3. Thanks for your review.

There is definitely something about this car that quietly speaks to it being a standout down the road. This might be the first modern-era electric car that ends up being a classic in 15-30 years. If only it had more exterior character then it might have become an instant. Color me intrigued.

Actually, I doubt most dealers in the US have the Polestar for sale right now. Their are no dealers in Little Rock, AR. Looking at this review, I doubt the Polestar will be much competition for the Model 3. Like most of the ev's that are on the market or will shortly be on the market they lack several things the model 3 has. Range, charging stations, and dealer network. Also the Tesla has hype and it is is difficult to beat hype! To get a Polestar 2 equipped like model 3 is going to cost much more too.

Very helpful review... In a year or two, people will stop comparing with Tesla, there will be more electric cars. People will simply buy the car that is suitable to their needs and taste. The car under review, polestar 2, seems more elegant to me. And will be a serious choice for me so as the Mach E. Others may feel different.

So, I'm just curious. Because Polestar and Volvo ARE so similar, what will happen once Volvo goes completely EV? What will set these two apart?
@tren133

Volvo still has a very large, and I think newly profitable ICE car lines, scattered around the world, which needs to transition to hybrids (which they are doing now) before they can fully electrify. So they are using Polestar to do a quick launch of EVs under its own brand but still using Volvo platforms and styling cues to save money. I guess as the rest of Volvo learns from Polestar's EV experience and start to electrify, they will focus on Volvo's traditional consumer markets including sedans/wagons/SUV style vehicles, and by that time Polestar hopefully is more mature and larger as well, and will have the resources to continue to evolve as Volvo's performance division like they have always done, maybe with their own distinct styling, and also focusing on body style such as coupe (like Polestar 1), performance hatch (Polestar 2), and "coupe style" SUV (Polestar 3). Note that there are no slow Polestars, and even the Polestar 2 is 400 HP and AWD. I presume future Volvos will have cheaper and 2WD models geared towards the non-enthusiast consumer market.

I can't wait for touch screens in cars to go away. And those panoramic roofs, too. In hot areas, cars bake enough in the sun as-is. Replacing the roof with a window will make them unusable.

@@danfisher765 , it's not the only reason but it basically leaves this the one and only car to only have one cupholder in the front (outside of supercars). Everything else being equal, you're buying the car that doesn't force your passenger to hold their drink the whole ride.

2 decent cup holders are mandatory. Sorry. But they spent how many millions developing this and all they could was shoehorn a little extra cup holder under the armrest? And don’t tell me it’s the state of Americans. Please. People drink beverages in their car and that’s just a fact. Even my dinky little Miata has better cup holders.

george idarraga even old european cars have barely any cup holders. I have a Euro spec s80 and it only had one center cup holder. I had to add the Us spec second cup holder because no one in Europe drinks when driving tbh. And If they do it’s usually a small closed bottle that fits in the door. I even had to change the rear center console to add cupholders from an american model.

Choosing a Polestar 2 over a Model 3 would be the easiest choice in the world due to Tesla's embarrassingly shoddy build quality. I've seen a few of Model 3s up close and it's actually much worse than most owners describe...hugely varying panel gaps, dozens of paint flaws, scratched glass, marred interior door panels, etc. These kinds of issues are an absolute deal breaker for me. However, the Polestar 2, even as a pre-production model, appears to be ready for prime-time. Rushed or not, this was an excellent review, Alex!

Yes, quite a few actually. Ventilated seats, LED matrix headlamps (this isn't much of a factor to Americans however), dimming door mirrors, blind spot monitoring and collision avoidance, higher end audio system, nappa leather, extending thigh cushions, etc. BUT there are other things it lacks that Tesla has like more cameras for Sentry Mode, a history of responsive OTA updates for new features (Polestar could do this, but we have no track record), the Tesla has faster DC fast charging, etc. It's a give and take.

Great review Alex! Looking forward to the Polestar 3…maybe the 2…not sure what the issue was with showing us the brake lights…your camera was on a tripod, wasn’t it? Couldn’t you just jump in the car and pump the brakes for the camera? Did I miss something? Overall, great review, as ALWAYS!! Couple of comments: Wish the charging port was in the front…short cords at chargers mean you need to always back in…not ideal. Love the 11kw on board charger! Curious to see what the charging curve will look like.

Love your reviews Alex. In electric cars, try latching the driver's seat belt, then get in and start the car. Leave it in park, leave the keys in it, and get out. The car will think you're still in it and stay on, along with your lights, ac, and accessories. Helpful at car shows in the summer as well.

I don’t believe that this is only in competition with the model three. Instead I think it’s in competition with BMWs Mercedes and Audi in a similar class and it is a method to get some of those customers who are used to paying those prices to come over to electric vehicles.
