It is probably a reference to Réquiem for a Spanish Peasant, one of the first roles by Antonio Banderas. It is the story of a Spanish peasant named Paco, whom we follow from birth until death. This is done from the perspective of the priest who baptised him, his old friend. In the rise of the Second Spanish Republic, Paco, runs for the village council and strips the absent landowners of their income so it can be used for the benefit of the poor. Latter, a gang of fascists take over the village, and Paco is hunted down by them. The priest learns from Paco's father where he is hiding, since the family trusts him, and is pressured by the fascists to turn him in. Paco is killed by the fascists.

Feudalism is more of a collectivist system of government. Capitalism is based on economic freedom and there was none of that under feudal economies. You were bound to the land. The guild system meant you weren't free to choose your profession. And the state, in this case the feudal lord, pretty much had total control over your life. On the other hand, you were also the responsibility of that feudal lord, at least in theory. So he had obligations to look after your welfare. When I think about it, that might be the appeal of Socialism. Feudal systems were generally quite stable and lasted a long time. Perhaps people are scared of economic freedom and want some feudal lord, aka the state, guaranteeing their security and managing their lives.

I remember how I used to watch this movie as a kid together with my dad. My dad always died of laughter when this scene came up. Meanwhile for me it was just an ordinary scene like any other in the movie. I always asked him what’s so funny about it and he was like you’ll understand when you’re a bit older. Today as an adult I totally get it. This scene is a masterpiece! 🤣

It has been almost two decades since this movie came out and I just realized that one of them used a pepper grinder on Shrek as pepper spray. 8 year old me thought that was a legitimate tactic used in medieval times.

For me Shrek 2 achieved peak comedy within its own franchise. The references, jokes and parodies to me were all top notch. There was barely a scene in Shrek 2 I didn't like.

“Will they get away with it, or did someone let the cat out of the bag?” is actually an underrated line. This scene was the cleanest yet accurate real-life reference they have ever put in the movie. Everything from the adult jokes to Funky Town playing as they entered Far Far Away, Puss in Boots' debut, and of course the Fairy Godmother singing Holding Out for a Hero all coming together is what makes Shrek 2 a masterpiece that belongs in the Louvre. Not to mention Simon Cowell shows up in the bonus scene on DVD. Puss in Boots was originally gonna be an English character (although the tale is originally Italian), but they thought it would be too similar to Farquaad. So after casting Banderas and watching Banderas's performance in The Mask of Zorro, they made the character Spanish.

I liked the last wish animation, but I'm worried we're going through another phase where studios just copy each other's style for a decade. Ever since Spiderverse was succesful, everyone's been pushing that comic book style. Wouldn't mind if they used it sparingly.

I just love how Puss in Boots fought the literal embodiment of death in The Last Wish...while at the same time losing to average guards in Shrek 2. Go back and watch all the shows and movies you used to. You'd be surprised. Like in the Powerpuff Girls where they have their new friend over and explain to her (in front of the professor) that he made them by accident in his lab. The little girl says, "It's okay professor, I was an accident too." The little things, lol
