Four years ago I put together my first vest and was told by my supervisor I was crazy. Now at least half of my shift has one in their car and they talk to new cadets in the academy about them as well. Like yours, I go very basic: 2-3 AR mags and a small med kit, identifier patch on the front and back, as well as a name patch front and back (left over from my Army days). Our crime rate here is higher than the boss likes to report to the city, so during my time spent as a training officer I too talked to new officers about why I have one and what to look for when they put one together. A great topic that needs to be covered, even if the brass wants to pretend the threat doesn't exist. Excellent topic.

"Go bags" are all the rage. But, might a hard armor plate carrier be a better option for patrol? Aimed at cops and higher end security but applicable to anyone who is worried about "active shooter" type situations. Let me know what you think.

A buddy of mine was responding to assist another officer. He was not responding under lights and sirens. A driver crossed the center line and hit him head on. Both vehicles were traveling at roughly 50mph. He was wearing a rifle plate (as he does all the time) when his chest hit the steering wheel hard enough to break the steering column. The plate broke 4 ribs, but saved his life.

Great video! I ran a ton of extra ammo when I was deployed, but that was mission profile. My active shooter kit contains much less ammo, I carry two 30r mags like yourself. But color, appearance, shape, etc of how your kit setup speaks a lot. It might be odd to say that, but there's always the balancing act of operational prudence versus public opinion in the aftermath of a shooting. I try to carry what I 100% need but not in such a way that it makes me look like the loadout of my Chris Costa action figure....

I know it’s old, but Ya know what I like most about this vid? It’s real. You didn’t waste your money on a blood type patch. I don’t know about other areas, but here in NE Ohio, if you need blood after a trauma, you’re getting o negative, regardless of what your patch says. Not knocking anyone who has the blood type patch, but since the consequence for it being inaccurate may be death, no trauma docs are going to take your plate carriers word for it!
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 6 жыл бұрын
I've wondered about people who do that too. If the plate carrier makes it to where the doc can see it something has gone radically wrong in the world. I can't even fathom a circumstance inside the US where that would occur.

The big elephant in the room, what if an active shooter bought a Plate carrier and a Velcro POLICE TAB. Personally i would assume everyone to be unknown until postively identified, wearing a POLICE TAB or uniform doesn't make you a Police Officer. This applies even more in the 21st century when you can buy just about anything Online on legitimate or illegitimate sites.
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 8 жыл бұрын
That has actually occurred before and when it did the shooter was taken down by a couple of astute patrolmen who recognized that the gear old boy was wearing wasn't issue. Luckily dudes gun was jammed up from one of those uber internet reliable 100 round mags and he was taken alive. Twas out in the northweat not to long ago if I'm not mistaken. That is where those "trained observer" skills come into play. But, the concern is definitely still valid. That is one of the reasons I am against having stock "Police" or "Security" items and would prefer whole agency names on stuff. Makes it a little harder to get. Sadly, that costs money and money talks. I generally have a (quite distinctive) department patch on my uniform, vest, and plate carrier to try to negate just such an issue. I took it off for the video for obvious reasons.

Those GGG plates cost about 450 each though, so there is some tradeoff in weight and cost. Lots of civilians are running steel plates, and while low cost the added weight means a reduction in speed.
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 8 жыл бұрын
+sawyer lawrence you'd be surprised the price you can get on poly plates if you shop around. I think I got mine in the $250 a piece range. That puts two plates and a carrier right around the price of a blue line glock and night sights.

@sawyerlawrence5033 8 жыл бұрын
That's really good for new ones, I had to get some secondhand ones from a UK police force, I paid 1,000 pounds for 20 plates and another 500 pounds shipping to the states. They've since changed the export laws, but armor is still so cheap over there. 50 pounds buys a two year old HG2( US IIIA) vest.

@@freefieldtraining LATE(!) reply, but UHMWPE plates are nice and light, but won't stop the pretty common M855 5.56mm ("green tip"). Steel is heavy and cheap, but usually won't stop the light faster 5.56/.223. Ceramic will usually stop everything, is heavier than poly but lighter than steel. It is also the most fragile.
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 5 жыл бұрын
@@Unicorn161 Nah, poly in conjunction will generally stop m193 or m855 (we've tested it on the channel here). You can also get stand alone poly plates that are special threat rated for m855 if you shop around and verify the rating. Ceramic is also not nearly as fragile as people make it out to be, especially modern composite ceramic designs. The NIJ now has impact testing protocols for palte ratings. About 5-10 years ago you would have been correct though.
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 5 жыл бұрын
@@Unicorn161 Also, in order for steel to not stop the lighter faster 556 you have to use a 20" barrel and have an absolutely perfect perpendicular frontal shot. Not very likely. I'd be more worried about the spall (which we also have tested here on the channel with currently available steel armor).

So I'd really like to have a plate carrier to put on top of my safariland vest (Oregon city). The issue being most of us keep most of our stuff on the vest. Radio, cuffs, less lethal. Only things on my belt are my holster and pistol mag pouch. So I don't think this will really work over top. Our vests can hold additional 10x12s but ceramics are too bulky and steel is too heavy to keep in there all the time. The carrier I was looking at was the first on from first spear. Any suggestions?
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 8 жыл бұрын
I'd work on a way to be able to slip a front plate in on an as needed basis. One of my better vests for SWAT that had a flap at the top, right under your chin, for a plate where you slid it down into the vest. www.pointblankenterprises.com/pointblankbodyarmor/?product=ram-1 In the picture the "POLICE" Patch is on the flap I am talking about Poly and ceramic plates were an affair to get in and out, but if yours slides in the same way you might be able to slide a front steel plate in on the fly. Plus steel is cheap and hard to damage, so you could just throw a plate in a duty bag or behind the seat. Better than nothing and would keep your cargo carrying capacity on your vest like you like it. If your vest requires disassembly to insert plates or is a side loader, you could take it to a tailor and have a 10x12 pouch sewn in the lining of the vest, against your body, that you could load a plate in on the fly. Though I question the comfort of that. To be honest, even the setup I show here is a bit bulky. Especially if I try to drive with it still on. I can't imagine having pouches on the font of my vest cover and tossing it over that.
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 8 жыл бұрын
I also looked into the first spear designs but, was worried about the "tubes" proprietary fastening. Looks cool, but as you can tell from the various videos, I have a tendency to break things and would prefer gear that is repairable. Now if someone reading this works for first spear and wants to send me one for free...
@jaredd624
@jaredd624 8 жыл бұрын
+free field training I could slip in a front plate pretty easy just with a quick unzip. But I'd either need to take it off or have someone else insert a back plate. But no disassembly is required. I have steel plates, but they are very heavy. Granted im pretty green, I love the external vest carriers, the other more salty guys have really grown to like them as well. I think it's really comfortable. I've heard good things about the tubes from first spear, but don't know anyone personally. I do know a guy personally that has one of those GGG mpcs and he loves it. Though not LE or mil, just a guy that trains a lot. ( search for the Practically Tactical channel they've done a review) I suppose I could simply keep plates in a bag to slip in if I have the chance. I also have the option of switching back to a concealable carrier, then I could keep something like this. I just really do like the external vest a lot.

@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 8 жыл бұрын
Both are very reliable. Using one pmag or lancer for soft point duty ammo and GI for harder penetrating special purpose rounds makes it easier to tell the difference, just by feel if necessary, between the different ammunition. So, if necessary at night in a crack house at 3am while moving and communicating I can tell what type of ammunition I am loading without looking. Makes it stupid easy and it's much more reliable than red and blue tape around the bottom quarter of the mag.

+Kim Jansson Where I am at any police officer can train and qualify with an AR-15 or Remington 870 shotgun. My department has them available for anyone who qualifies to use. I own both an AR-15 and a Remington 870 I qualify with both but generally carry my personal AR and use the department’s shotguns if I need one. I went to SWAT school a few years back and was on a team for a time, It did not suit me for many reasons and I went back to doing field training. LEO is shorthand for Law Enforcement Officer, a generic term that covers several classifications of police and quasi police jobs.

+free field training Could you do a video on your experiences on a SWAT team? I'm curious as to why the job did not suit you. I had the displeasure of speaking to a few of my municipality's Emergency Response Team members and they were all egotistical pricks. They had their heads shaved and just glared around at anything or anyone they could to make them uncomfortable. Later that day I was joking with some other officers that were not surprised with my encounter of them. Did you find that tactical teams attracted a certain type of person?
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 8 жыл бұрын
+AnInnocentLittleBoy let's just say I wasn't for me for personal reasons and I wasn't very good at it. SWAT tactics lean heavily on the officer being disposable and "working percentages". Deciding what is good or bad allowed for things like "only a 33% chance if getting shot" to be considered "good chances". Not to knock it, they have this strange tendency of winning gunfights because of it. Problem is I have small kids and a real strong urge to end the day with the same number of holes I started with. Standing in the open and " taking rounds" just dosen't compute in my head, I tried to get it in there, just wasn't working. It takes a special kind of person to repeatedly and perfectly, with the grace and precision of a professional dancer, do CQB while knowing that if things go bad they have a fairly good chance of getting killed or seriously wounded. It is also, at least where I am, like having two full time jobs. The training schedule is grueling, the expectations extraordinarily high, and the schedule insane. It was "normal" to work a regular 8hr shift on afternoons, get 3hrs of sleep, wake up at 2 am, hit a house at 3:30am, then have (extremely physical) training starting at 8am and running ten hours. Then do it all again the next day. Imagine that with a wide and two little kids... As you could imagine the people who are attracted to, and are good at, that job are a special breed. I tried for a long time to master that art, and learned alot along the way, but it is just not for me. I won't do a video on it because I think what I have to say, no matter how I frame it would sound like critasisim, and dissuade people from bidding into swat. That is the last thing I want. SWAT fulfills a critical life saving function that is largely misrepresented in both media and amongst cops. Having tried it myself, I can tell you that I, personally, have nothing but respect for the folks who do that job and do it well. Just like cops in general it is the bad apples that stick out. Plenty of guys are on ERT teams and you would never know it unless you asked. The dude wearing the Oakley's with a Boonie hat, team shirt that is a size too small, and shamage (sp?) to the bar and wont talk to you is the one that sticks out. Ignore him.

+free field training In a mass emergency, do LEOs let bystander LEOs from other agencies help them handle the situation? Like if there was an active shooter, could an MP help them disarm the subject?

+Zach Carter depending on the legalities of it yes. MP's used to be restricted from carrying in many places by army policy and state law. Now some are covered under LEOSA. I'm sure the DOD might still have issues with them taking official action off duty though. As far as neighboring civilian agencies though, definitely.

In regards to ID, what if the backside was simply read/numbered: 911...would that be considered impersonating LEO? I'm LE trained/certified but not active/licensed or employed. I like having a plate carrier but don't want to be mistaken as the bad guy(s) or charged for wearing it during such an unfortunate event. Thx!
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 8 жыл бұрын
+sodara Many states have far more impersonation laws than just impersonating LE. Many make it a crime to impersonate any government official or public safety worker. In at least one state it is currently illegal to impersonate anyone; cop, pilot, nurse, anybody. (Holloween is a bit of a downer there I would imagine) Putting "911" on your back may very well lead to some sort of impersonation charge, though I'm not aware of any specific case law on the issue and I am far too tired to look it up at the moment. That isn' t even your biggest problem though, when you start doing weird things like that there are far reaching unintended consequences. You may very well make the situation worse by causing people to call about the suspicious person with a plate carrier, rifle, and "911" written on his back. This would draw resources away from the actual.threat and towards you. Best case, you waste lots of time and resources, worst case... In an incident where there were already people shot I think you may very well become the prime suspect and the attention of what we so affectionately call a "stinger team" from the local constabulary. That would kind of defeat the purpose of ID. It WOULD make your life insurance a sound investment though, so there is that. You may also get jumped and beat the crap out of or ambushed by an off duty or ccw holder who assumed you were the bad guy...also not good. Some of those ccw holders are excellent shots and have lived long hard lives where they have learned things which could make you remaining days... unpleasant. You will likely get in some legal trouble with any ID pannel that does not accurately depict who you are and what you are there for. Since 100% of shootings require medical attention to be rendered and the number of medical personnel required for a mass casualty incident will be hundreds of times greater than the number of trigger pullers, might I suggest that you try an "EMT" ID pannel... With the proper certification and gear of course. Then there is no legal issues (that I'm aware of) and you have a skill that definitely WILL come in handy. Plus you get to buy new gear! Who dosent like new gear?!

Companies have figured out how to make armor stay put without sucking it to you with a big piece of uncomfortable elastic. I've had body armor with a cummerbund system and without. I'd much prefer the ones designed without.

Sgt. Awesome The one that comes with Chapstick and a multitool? I'm sure the rig could get the job done, but let's not confuse just carrying a bunch of stuff with being prepared. If you don't carry a multitool normally the chances of you using it in a critical incident are pretty slim. The Chapstick I don't even have words for.

+Julio Lua I honestly don't know. Most guys carrying these around have some sort of official capacity in which they are engaged. "Police", "Security", "Sheriff", "EMS", "EMT", " F.F./paramedic", "MEDIC", "Tactical MEDIC" "Military Police" and the like. I've heard retired guys have the same debate before about ID in an emergency. They generally conclude that they don't want to go to jail for impersonation and so don't want to carry gear around with "police" on it. Some say that in the *highly* unlikely event that they should need such equipment just going about their regular everyday retired life that they would just risk taking blue on blue. Those guys, in my opinion, have balls. Talk about being in it for the love of the game. Not to dissuade you from buying cool stuff (I love cool stuff too), but in the unlikely event of you happening upon an active shooter in your every day life current data suggests that you and everyone around you are better off engaging the shooter immediately with whatever you have on you. Plan accordingly.

you could attach a small-medium size pouch on the rear of the vest, added cargo/ammunition capacity for you and your fellow officers, at the expense of a little extra weight
@freefieldtraining
@freefieldtraining 8 жыл бұрын
+Docster12 Ah, yes, I've seen those. Here is the issues with them to keep in mind though. Affixing the pouch to the back of the armor means that to get to the stuff inside you will need somone else's help or to take the armor off. As current thought is leaning towards a single officer response to active shooters that might not prove to be an expedient way to access gear. There is also just the general issue of weight. People often disregard the fact that everything weighs something and that weight adds up. Five AR mags is five extra pounds. Five pounds isn't much, unless you are already carrying fifty. You have to draw the line somewhere. Lastly, by putting a non easily removable pouch to the back of your armor you are pretty well killing your ability to operate a car if needed with the armor on. As it is this setup makes it extremely hard to fit behind the wheel of any vehicle. So, what are we gaining by adding a back pouch and is it worth what we are losing? Only you can decide for you.
