Hi! In this video tutorial we will talk about how to bake polymer clay: right temperature and how long you should bake.
I recently conducted a survey on my Instagram @polina_creations which addressed the topic of my interest in baking polymer clay. Thank you very much all, for the questions! In this video, I try to answer some of them. If you have any questions, please ask in the comments below.
In the beginning, I planned to shoot one big video on this topic of baking clay, but when I started to think about the script, I realized that it was necessary to divide the video into parts since all the information towards the end of the video would take up at least half an hour of the video..
Video sound slightly accelerated, there is so much info, I didn’t want this video to be 3 hours. if something is not clear - please click on the subtitle button below. Subtitles are in English and Russian.
I plan to continue a series of videos about baking polymer clay. In my next video we will talk about ovens for baking polymer clay and how to bake clay properly.
Please subscribe to my channel not to miss new videos! See you soon!

спасибо большое за видео! почему-то я до этого слышала, что лучше запекать подольше на более маленькой температуре, и в итоге я получала неприятности, по типу трещин на фигурке. кажется, я поняла причину этого Х).
@polinacreations7729
@polinacreations7729 2 жыл бұрын

Thank you so much for showing us how to bake the clay, this is really helpful. I have a question, I see all the time people creating pieces of clay as part of a wood piece or a glass piece. My question how do you bake the piece without burning the wood or thr glass or do people creat the piece and bake separately?

Hi Polina, thank you for this video, it was super helpful! Love your work 💕 I tried many times baking my FIMO at the recommended temperature (130° C), but it always ended up burning so I began baking it at a lower temperature (90-100° C). I have a toaster oven. What can I do to bake it at a higher temperature without burning it? Thank you so much 🌸

Hi! I'm happy my video was helpful! 🌷 It is hard to answer not seeing the process... Do you have an oven thermometer? It is a must-have. The ovens often don't show the temperature correctly. I have a video about the ovens, please take a look: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7upnrqjnq-aYaM.html Another important thing is the baking surface. I would recommend baking your item on a ceramic tile covered with cardboard or paper. I also have a video about baking surfaces, please take a look: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qa9mgKl9q6emkqs.html Perhaps you place your item too close to the oven heater. As I said it is hard to answer not seeing the process :( I'm going to post a video about clay burning soon, I hope it will help! ❤

Hi Polina ! thanks for sharing your experiment ! this is such a helpful info !! Well, I have a few questions about baking. 1. Is it ok to put foil on the clay before baking so that it could prevent clay from burn out? 2. To prevent the clay from breaking after baking, is it better to dry it at room temperature or put it directly in the frige? It would be appreciate if you answer my question :) thanks

Hi! Sorry for the late reply! I'm happy my video was helpful!🌷🌷🌷 1. It is hard to say. Because the results can be unpredictable sometimes. I would recommend leaving space between the clay and the foil (for free air passage). I prefer using a cardboard tent - it gives more predictable results. I made a video about different types of burning prevention, but it is still not finished! Shame on me! I need to list it!😁🙈 2. I always dry it at room temperature. I think the main reason for the clay breaking is the low baking temp. / not enough baking time or both. I also noticed Sculpey lll is more fragile than other clay brands. So if you bake at the right temp and enough time you dot need to worry about breaking! 🌷😉

Such a Great video! For things that are a little thicker, like your charms how do you know that it has cured all the way? I’m still experimenting and sometimes I get it on the first time but sometimes my thinner pieces will still brake once I try the bending test. But thicker pieces can’t really be bent.

Hello, I just started using polymer clay for the first time yesterday. I preheated the toaster oven and got it to 275 in advance (I bought a separate thermometer and placed it in oven). I placed my piece on a piece of copy paper with a ceramic tile under it with a foil tent. I baked for the recommended time for Sculpey Premo (275 F). My piece broke when I tried to bend... I tried it for a little longer the second time... it broke again. I then kept it in there for an entire hour.. it STILL broke. I was monitoring the temp the whole time and made sure it stayed in the correct range. Every tutorial I watch says if it breaks, it hasn't cured long enough. I had it in there an entire hour! What am I doing wrong here?
@polinacreations7729
@polinacreations7729 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Kelly, sorry for the late reply! I missed your comment. It is hard to answer not seeing the process... You are right: if it breaks, it hasn't cured long enough. If the temperature was even 275F and baking time was long enough, maybe the reason is the clay itself. May I ask you what brand of clay you used? The "Sculpey lll" clay always becomes brittle after baking (I prefer Premo - it is durable 😉👌🏻). Also, I would try to experiment: to bake your item without the foil tent. In my experience, the foil tent works well, but it may give unpredictable results sometimes... If your oven works great and doesn't burn your items, you don't need to use any cover like paper tents /foil tents/ foil pan, etc. :) Where is your item placed in the oven while baking? If the clay is placed close to the heating element inside the oven, it burns and becomes weak. If your oven has three racks, I would recommend putting it on the middle rack. I hope this will help! I would like to know how did it work out. 😉🌷

I do have a question. I got a kit for beginers. It does give the bakin times but it does not state wat kind of clay it is. Emily chen is the one i have. So i am confused on wat times to bake. In her book it lists primo/sculpy 275f for 30 sulpey 3 275f for 15 an fimo 230f for 30. So since this is a kit there r no times on the acual clay so i do not know wat time i should bake it. Ty for ur help.

Hi, sorry for the late reply!🌼 I missed your comment. I would recommend starting with making some samples. Start with 230F for 20-30 min and look at them after baking. Try to bend them. Then bake with 255-260F and do the same, try to break it. Does it flexible, or does it fragile? If they break easily - low temperature. Then bake with 275F. Pay attention to the color. Does it change the color or not? Some clay brands always change color after baking, like Cernit. Fimo tended to do it as well. Premo may change its color, but if it was baked at a high temperature, or for a long time (1 hour and more). I know, it sounds confusing, but the only way to find the correct temp - is experimenting. What about me, if I am not sure about the temp. I choose the temp, somewhere between (255-260F - it is between 230 and 275F). Especially, if I bake the mix of Fimo and Premo/Sculpey lll. I hope this will help! If you have questions, please ask me! I will do my best to help you! 😉🌷

Hi, I have 2 types of ovens: a convection oven and a toaster oven. They both work great! My cheap toaster oven has a heating element on the bottom - 99% of my items I bake in it, and it works just fine for small pieces. I would recommend using 👉🏻 a convection oven (it have a fan inside) 👈🏻 based on the fact that the fan distributes the temperature evenly. I have a video about my ovens please take a look: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Z7upnrqjnq-aYaM.html I hope this will help! 🙂🌷 🙂🌷

Usually, I use average temperature in between both. In this case - 260F (it is average between 275 and 245). 😉🌷 I would recommend making baked samples before baking your project if you are not sure about the temperature. This is what I do if I'm not sure. 🙂

Average polymer clay baking temperature is between 230 - 275 F. I would use something between: 250 - 255 F. Also, I would recommend to make baking samples to be sure you are using the right temperature. In 99% of my projects I bake it around 260 F and it works great for me. 🌷
