As a watch fanatic myself, I understand why people would say not to get it polished because it looses its “personality” when the patina is gone. However, those are watch people that also want the original story with their pre owned watch. For you, the polishing makes sense because now you can make your story and start mostly from new. Here’s to making your own scratches! 🥂

@@StevieSellsI was just about to comment what this guy said. I agree that watches look nice worn in but it’s great to be able to feel that it’s your watch by making dings and scrapes yourself. It doesn’t feel like it when you do it at the time because it’s so expensive. But they’re made to be worn and the more use you get out of it, the more of a worthy investment it is. Think of it as $5800 / how many times you wear it. If you wear it 1000 times which is roughly 5 days a week for 3 years then it’s only 5.80 per day you’ve worn it. You can’t even rent a watch for that little!

@@adams7303 That doesn't really make sense. You can be a watch/jeweler and still be a licensed dealer, even an official one certified dealer for varied amounts of brands. And even then you can still provide services to the specified brand that you represent, and still sell from that brand even IF they don't showcase what they provide on the shop floor (high end merch in the back rooms sht like that.) The representative was even giving the guy a few lessons on the watch movement with an explosive view(which was also a Rolex) desk mat that was on the counter.

I bought a knackered old 1974 Hamilton Datetime LED watch for £30, broken. I repaired it, polished the red crystal and when it finally fired up, I couldn't believe how it looked. The LEDs are loads of tiny dots rather than segments, under magnification it's very impressive and at night it looks sweet. It's not valuable, but it's rare and very different. It's also very accurate, I timed it to GMT, and after almost a year, when it came time to roll the clocks by an hour, I checked GMT again and it hadn't lost or gained a single second. Before I used to fawn over mechanical watches, but after that, I now prefer the cold precision of a quartz crystal. 👁️👄👁️

It's almost the perfect watch. I own other watches (Rolex Omega) and I always go back to the Explorer. What makes this Rolex the best IMO. It's the versatility of the Explorer. The Explorer is the watch for the person that doesn't need to show off or prove anything to anyone. It's the purist Rolex. It's a professional model, it's a field watch, a mountaineers watch, a sport watch, a casual watch, and can be a dress watch. Plus MOST people will never notice or know it's a Rolex. Stealth luxury but more importantly, it's quality. It's also an icon in the watch world. The original 007 watch. If you keep it it can be something you can pass down to your child or relative. Congrats!!! Keep it don't sell it, enjoy it, and wear it in good health.

Perfect bro. Super happy for you. I hope to own a Rolex one day. I really appreciate what you did giving back that Rolex to the one lady. Also I remember a lot of people were saying you got scammed and she played you. I just want to say, giving back is worth the risk of getting played, if a homeless person on the street is asking for $5 and turns out he is not a homeless and is hustling, yes you got played, however it doesn’t change your intentions, that you genuinely wanted to help someone, that’s what’s important. Also if that person is homeless you could be sincerely helping them. Idk just my thoughts bro, keep up the great videos.

They've done a decent job of polishing it without going too far, too heavy of a polish on the bracelet can create slight play in the links and it kills the overall feeling of quality that Rolex are known for. As someone who worked in the trade for 15 years, I can confirm that dealer was dead-on with what she was saying. Rolex are master marketers and thats really the main reason they command the prices they do, they aren't really a "better" watch than any of their swiss equivalents from other brands

All that matters is do you like it. What anyone else thinks is not really important, unless you bought it on spec, and plan to sell it soon. But if you're going to keep it, then do with it whatever will make it that much more precious to you. Have fun with it, friend. I remember my first Rolex....a previously owned stainless Date Just with a smooth bezel. I loved that watch, but was always afraid to wear it, that it might get scratched, broken, or stolen. Since then, I've owned three more Rolexes, and wear them without fear. There's no point spending that much money on something you don't enjoy. Good luck!

I get why people say not to polish watches, but imo I don't have a problem polishing a used watch if it doesn't have a story I care about. If it was my father's watch or my grandfather's watch, I would be less inclined to polish it because those scratches tell a family story. If it's just a used watch that some stranger scratched, I'd polish it and put my own scratches on it.

There are collectible things where polishing, removing the patina, would degrade the convertibility and therefore the value. If this watch was owned by someone famous, that might be so. But, for a common stainless steel Rolex, I think polishing would enhance the value and it looks very nice. As for her comment about the movement being comparable to other much cheaper movements: There are mass produced movements (Japanese, Seiko, for example) that run very well. Then go find the videos that show the manufacture and assembly of a Rolex.

Polishing modern watches is completely fine. When people say don’t polish a watch that typically applies to vintage pieces because it’ll hurt the value. What’s the point of wearing a beat up Rolex when that model is still currently in production. Just get it polished and looking good so you can enjoy wearing it.

Looks great, but any protective coating or plating on the steel has now been compromised and if you plan on selling it in the future I'd recommend disclosing that it was polished when serviced. Many watch fans will literally avoid Rolex ADs when getting heirloom watches serviced to prevent polishing on vintage pieces for this reason.

people always say that if you change an original piece it looses value but value is what you make of it. Keeping it the same and being afraid to use it is what makes it lose its value
