@absolutleynotanalien8096
@absolutleynotanalien8096 Жыл бұрын
I have a question. Should Grievous even be using 4 lightsabers? Or would he be more succesful with just one? Grievous in his battle with Obi-wan Grievous was able to dent a space ship with one whole arm not half an arm. Grievous was also able to bladelock and strain Obi-wan with 2 halves of his arms. Grievous also weighs around twice as much as the avarange human adult and most of that weight is elevated high above the ground by his exeptionaly long legs and his feet could probably hock into most floors since they can crush people because thats how he got his first kills. So with all of this in mind it seams like he should be able to preform very powerful downwards strikes that would be nigh unblockable. He would also be able to quikly manuvre his blade with his 8 fingers and 4 thumbs especialy since he was able to use a lightsaber with 2 fingers and one thumb. Since his battle with Obi-wan happened after his lungs were crushed he might have been stronger before aswell so before that his strikes would be even harder to block. Disarming him wouldn't be posible without cutting him or breaking the sabre due to his 4 thumbs and strenght. He could still attack from multiple angles by attempting to replicate his original kill. Or was his strategy superior or would dual weilding have been the best option?

@GeneralBlackNorway
@GeneralBlackNorway Жыл бұрын
Tatooine is not an inefficient economy, it's simply a poor economy. To import ice from space would be too expensive, nobody could afford that water. To efficiently run an ice mining, transport and delivery business you would need large ships and mining rigs that don't require a lot of workers per unit of ice produced. However that is capital intensive compared to the moisture farmers. In essence you need economy of scale and once you scale up production you will produce so much water that the price of water on Tatooine will fall below the cost of production. Tatooine is too small and poor for an ice importing business to make sense. Moisture farming however requires little equipment and is low maintenance compared to spaceships. Kind of like why they don't build huge efficient power plants in poor rural African countries. Or import water for an even better example lol.

To grate Star Wars political leaders is an interesting take. However I think that your ratings are somewhat strange as far as Mon Mothma goes. You specifically said "chancellor" Mon Mothma but you rated basically her entire political life. But if you truly look at her ideas as chancellor, you'll see that she's not a pragmatist but an idealist. She wanted to reconcile with the former Imperials, quickly demilitarized before the war was over and returned power to the local governments. Her ultimate flaw is that she wanted to turn back time to the pre-Clone Wars era instead of realizing that galaxy has changed that the Galactic Republic was failing even before Palpatine became chancellor.

I think dooku would be mid-left authoritarian. He hated the corruption of the Republic and wanted equality between the people. That's also why he agreed to be backed by all the monopolies of the galaxy so when in his plan with palpatine he would lose to the republic, all of them would be destroyed. Dooku also believed that democracy was flawed since it voted for the corruption so he became an authoritarian ("corruption like you must be eradicated" )

I like the fact that you recognize that there are decent people all over the political spectrum. Some ideas may be foolish, but they don't become evil until a person enacts them that way. For instance, a very, very libertarian community could be wonderful if all the people are good but dangerous if the people are evil. I read a book by Mike Huckabee years ago expecting him to advocate small government without question. But in his very first chapter, he creates a scenario (prior to the defend police days) in which all the police left the streets of Detroit. What would the organized gangs of Detroit do to its residents without the restraint of the police? Obviously, a reduction in government by shrinking the police is a frightening mental image in an already dangerous city like Detroit from a couple of decades ago. He argued that "self-government" is a much more important issue than "small government" vs. "big government." I appreciated his admission that knee-jerk shrinking of government can be foolish if a society's turmoil is caused by sources in its populace. But if the problem can be traced to government, is not being aided by existing government programs, or is being worsened by government programs, then those should be rolled back. And when the helpfulness of government action is questionable, the benefit of the doubt should always be given to individual people and away from collective government. I respected this argument because the issue of "self-government" is an issue that everyone can get on board with. Most of American society agrees that if you men would make good choices and stay away from violent crime, instead choosing to work hard and be productive (i.e. govern themselves) then a lot of solutions that either political side touts would immediately be moot. This is where you see common ground with politically liberal pastors and politically conservative pastors. When they have dialogue, they all agree that churches and fathers have the most important jobs in young men's lives and that all the solutions that the DNC or the GOP offer are barely window dressing in the life of an honorable young man. That's why I love the dialog you mention. I am very committed to my good ol' Republican values, but those politics don't hold a candle to how important I believe it is to teach my kids to behave honorably in this world. Today, my 17 year old son is flying out of the country with a group of young men to do some building in Mexico for a school down there. He is doing this part because of adventure and part because of his faith and part because of his love for his neighbor. But it is all with the kind of honor I hope for my son (and for myself!!). It has nothing to do with left vs. right. In fact, he has no clue about the politics in the village or the school. As I have spent time overseas, I understand that our view of left vs right doesn't always match other nation's politics. That's why we might find ourselves rooting for a fictional character holding the opposite viewpoint from us. Who knows where we would land if placed in a different context? I am deeply moved by the communists citizens of Stalingrad whenever I am reminded of their sacrifice during WW2. Christians can side with Muslim Uygurs in China. US Democrats can side with right-wing citizens being oppressed in Cuba or Venuzuela. Even Florida democrats root for Cuban exiles to make it here safely, then have to deal with the majority of them voting GOP. But FL Dems want Cubanos safety because of the decency of their hearts, in spite of their own party affiliation.

The entire problem with this theory is that NY, San Francisco, Chicago, and Seattle prove that super liberal communities inevitably become dangerous. That's why ppl and businesses are leaving them. This is such a great idea and it really does highlight the difference between political, economic, etc philosophy and people living in a real world. Each of the Star Wars characters you discussed are very complex characters and so they don't fit neatly and simply into any political, economic, etc philosophy. Which is, like you said at the start, is why we shouldn't be so quick to assume things about people based on what they say their guiding philosophies are (if they even say one) because people just don't fit so easily in those boxes. I mean, even if you used a three dimensional political compass where the x-axis still represents the characters' economic philosophy/ideology, the y-axis still represents the characters' governance philosophy/ideology, and the z-axis represents the characters' cultural/social philosophy/ideology it'd still be difficult to place these characters neatly into any of the quadrant boxes. But I think these kinds of mental exercises are good and can help us think more deeply about the types of philosophies and ideologies in our own world and time and be more able to make more nuanced understandings of not only our leaders and those who want to be our leaders, but also about ourselves and how one's philosophies and ideologies are in a state of constant change around any given topic. Great video and well put together! I think you picked some great Star Wars characters to use in this example and gave a thorough explanation about them without ascribing any singular philosophy or ideology to them (especially since in the Star Wars universe those terms/labels wouldn't be used) and then showed them on the compass. Thanks for making and sharing this! I know I don't comment very often, but I do enjoy your videos. I love that you discuss Star Wars from so many different angles!

SInce you talked politics here, Alan. How about finding out what kind of democracy is used to run the Republic? Liberal democracy? Illberal democracy? Presidential democracy? Parliamentary democracy? Majoritarian democracy? Minority democracy? Dominant-party democracy? Electoral democracy? Authortitarian democracy?

This is honestly a huge improvement from the video you made 5 years ago about where the Empire lies on the political scale. Used more accurate definitions of left-right economics instead of "government does stuff = left" and "government doesn't do stuff = right".

I'd say it's more fair to label Saw Gerra as an Anarchist he clearly mistrusts any form of government and only cares about his own group he reminds of Nestor Makhno leader of the Insurgent Army of Ukraine during the Russian Civil War.

Ironic you posted this.. I’ve been thinking about something like this lately. If I existed in Star Wars.. would I be a rebel (restore the republic) or an imperial? Or.. would I even be a reluctant imperial? Reluctant as in: I see the evil the empire does, but also sees the benefits.. aka “what else can there be”.
@Delsanar
@Delsanar Жыл бұрын
It's not appropriate to say any benefits existed unless you were on the path of power. It's more appropriate to say you'd be bending around the concepts of comfort, oppression, submission, or insurgency.

One critique, your description of left vs right on the axis is from a capitalism=freedom view point. The most consistent difference is what factor of production dominates economic decisions. Capital for right, labor for left, and land for feudalism. Left can also be described as anti capitalist due to blended systems like market socialism being thrown into the left category
