My father was a Hindu refugee - lost his family land in Pakistan, walked for days to restart in India in 1947. A familiar story of many like him. He told me that the real reason why Pakistan was formed was because in every village, the savings rate of Hindus was much higher and most of the debt was owed by Muslims to Hindus. With a stroke of the pen, all that debt was wiped out. It took 75 years but karma is at the door, asking for a settlement.

Pak is literally "Allah bharose". This episode wraps up nicely with yesterday's episode on India's budget. Officially, Defense spending is 17.5% of Pak's current expenditure. Unofficially it would be much higher. To make matters worse, the Pak army actually has its own PSUs independent of the Federal Govt. Debt servicing accounts for 30% of the budget. They practically have nothing left for Infra after salaries & terrorism funding. Corruption is rampant, and most politicians already have dual citizenship with one foot in Britain.

With that kind of nutty cocktail of lies and communal hatred about the what and why of Pakistan, the future writes itself. That includes the Kashmir fiascos, Bangladesh blunders, strategic depth mirage, economic mess, "hunting with the hounds and running with the hare" in Afghanistan to milk USA of billions of dollars, keeping and maintaining terror infrastructure etc. Unless they make peace with facts, clarify who and what Pakistan stands for (as in just to protect the interest of Pak people and boundary only and that they are very much of Indian origin), fix their education policy, destroy terror network, send army back to the barracks, bid a permanent goodbye to mullahs and madrassahs etc., I cannot imagine how it can even have a modicum of normalcy. When SG sir talked about the time when there was 6% growth in Pak, it was a great example. Now Imagine if Politicians around the world focused majorly on development, tech and other constructive things, shedding all the petty and unnecessary stuff, setting aside differences and worked together, how our world would have developed. But then again one can only wish such a thing can happen, cannot be too idealistic.😔😮‍💨

Present crisis in Pakistan strongly correlates with American disinterest and withdrawn from Afganistan and it shows in any economic indicator you choose to see how it has deteriorated over time. From 60s Pakistan leveraged their geostrategic location to get money from USA. In 60s it was US spying from Gilgit of USSR using U2 planes, In 70s it was brokering US China friendship, lateron volatile Afganistan before and 9/11 provided perennial dollar flow. Inspite of this, Pak went to IMF 22 times. This shows rhe extent of mismanagement or loot that was happening. Today IMF has put a condition that assets of all military and civilian top officer be made public

Pakistan is a relic of the Great Game. Pakistan and Ukrainistan are opposite sides of the same coin. The Anglo-$axons and NATO will bail out and prop up Pakistan using western taxpayers' money and call it the Islamic Moneybags Fund (IMF) because the Indus valley is surrounded by countries that are friendly to? You guessed it. Russia! Pakistan is the last piece in the geopolitical jigsaw waiting to fall under Russia's sphere of influence. When that happens a nuclear armed Orthodox Christian power will be able to project military power in the Middle East. In the meantime Pakistani generals and incompetent and corrupt Pakistani politicians and kleptomaniacs will be laughing all the way to western banks and tax havens. Another foreign policy disaster by the Anglo-$axons led NATO coming near you soon.

Japan and Germany had a huge military industrial complex. They used their industrial enterprise largely for military purposes during the 19th century. Germany wanted to counter Britain with it and Japan wanted to defeat Russia first and then USA. Both Germany and Japan lost the WW2 so badly that they decided to abandon this military industrial complex and converted that industrial enterprise for more productive purposes and look where they're now. Pakistan is a military dominated state but they mostly import their military hardware. They don't have much industrial enterprise currently to move away from militarism to more productive industrialisation.

Thank you for a great episode, sir! I liked that instead of focusing on any one thing, this episode was more of a general overview of Pakistan's current state of affairs, and what led them to this situation. There have been two significant developments in Pakistan over the last year, both of which CTC has covered extensively - the rise > fall > defiance of Imran Khan and the changing role/approach of Pakistan's Army. The last I had heard (from CTC), Imran Khan had just been shot at and elections seemed to be on the horizon and the retiring Army general had made quite an uncharacteristic speech. I wonder where both of these situations are at currently.

Harsh the success of Swaziland gives blueprint for success for a poor country. The king of Swaziland introduced a system based on meritocracy. Competent people were placed in positions of power. Second the resources of country were exploited for national benefit not the powerful few. A strong capitalist economy which protects private property ownership. Strong governance to prevent corruption. Respect for the rule of law. Respect for minorities within the country. Positive relations with neighbouring states. Long term stable relations with international partners. It’s the only country to recognise Taiwan and has done so for fifty years. I think Swaziland is the blueprint that any impoverished former colonised nation without access to sea can emulate.

Lol if that was true then Indonesia and Malaysia would be poverty-stricken, instead of Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
