I read somewhere else that he told her something was wrong with his laces. Whether that is fact or not, I have no idea. I do think he looked pale or tired here though, moreso than after earlier performances. I remember how very sad this story made me back in my early 20s when it happened. Now that I am also a widow far too young, my heart breaks even more for his beautiful wife and daughter. Such an awful loss. We truly never know what turn life is going to take.

This song is a funeral song. Katia described it as people asking forgiveness for all the things they might have done wrong.

@@kljzjj yeah, it was Katia she said that on her book. Sergei was pale because his lace was loose but he decided to continue anyway. That's why she looked at his shoes when he was telling her that.

He had just recently passed a physical. He made no complaints to Katia or anyone else. The pain in the lift was likely due to the injury to a nerve in his back he had been dealing with. He had not mentioned any shortness of breath, or any chest pains. I have seen interviews with his dr’s and the ER dr’s on the day it happened - they all say there were no signs and he had zero symptoms. It’s a terrible tragedy, and it’s natural for all of us to think there must have been SOME sign. Some way to avoid this! But sometimes there is just not. One of the dr’s said it’s not the type of thing that would have been found in a routine exam. It was take a stress test or some other heart-specific test, and you’d only give those if there had been signs. And the treatment would have been a bypass surgery. 💔

@@JAScreativeArts True. Also, many times in young people the first sign of coronary artery disease is sudden death. Though the recurring back pain Sergei had was caused by the thing you mentioned. Pain in the left upper back can also be a symptom of heart attack. If only Sergei exhibited other symptoms, he could have been diagnosed by his doctors. That's why heart attacks are a silent killet. Many people do not know tjey have it until the first symptoms kick in. And many time those symptoms are fatal.

Sergie passed 5yrs after his father and his mother passed 5ys after Sergie and I belive they were Married just on 5yrs.

Only a stress test would have picked up the issue, all the doctors have said that, but who thinks about doing that at 28

In an interview in Russian that I saw a while ago, Sergei himself said that now it’s time to rest and that maybe they can turn to coaching but Katia loved skating and insisted they keep going. By that time they already had earned enough money and there was no need to keep on going. In her book she talked about how around the 94 Olympics is when Sergei started suffering and after the games it just got worse and worse. His shoulder and wild back pain, the pinched nerve in his foot, those are quite serious things, but she didn’t think to just stop skating and settle down. If we here can see him struggling and see how bad he looks, how could she not have seen and she spends every day with him? I don’t understand.

@@toxic-low-key-ghost7934 I get your point. But he didn't exhibit other symptoms aside from that persistent back pain which was just treated by doctors he saw as the usual injury athletes have. He was an athlete who was only 28 yrs old. Heart disease was probably the last thing on their mind. Also, we watch Sergei's last public performance and observe him with what happened to him on mind, so it's easy for us to notice and say such things because we already know what happened. We're looking for signs. But his wife and the people surrounding him at that time had no clue. They also probably thought that it was just back injury. And off the ice, he also probably just looked fine. Even Paul Wylie and colleagues said so. Heart disease is a silent killer. Its first symptoms could be fatal which seems like Sergei's case. Even the doctors said he didn't show other symptoms. The back pain he had could be angina. It was misdiagnosed. Then, it led to his fatal heart attack.

He didn't have shoulder pain after having surgery in 1991. Also, that shoulder pain was om the right side so it wasn'g cardiac related. But the recurring back pain he had 1995 could very well be heart problem related. He consulted with doctors and was treated but the pain returned. He was misdiagnosed, I think. He also didn't exhibit any other symptoms.

@@martheresa7550 Retired nurse of 27 years here. Right shoulder pain can absolutely be cardiac related. Not saying it was in Sergei’s case, but it certainly can be.

Yes, a morning roup practice session for the upcoming Stars on Ice. They had finished the group portion, and Katia and Sergei had moved to a smaller rink with their choreographer/coach, Marina Zueva, in order to rehearse a piece that had just been finished for them the day prior.

This performance was on Nov. 12, 1995. He died on Nov. 20, 8 days after this.

She was only 24 when he died, being alone forever is not what Sergei would have wanted for her, she has lived her life. But always said that Sergei was the love of her life. We all deserve love in our lives

Katia, and anyone else in a similar situation, still deserve love and happiness in their lives, and to continue LIVING, to the best of their ability. Yes, what they had was special and deserves to be honored, but it's not an either/or scenario. Life doesn't stop, but continues unfolding.

Maggie Williams He Had to be feeling the affects of his artery blockage!! There’s just no way he couldn’t but being in such good shape it was probably just brushed off as being tired. If only his Dr. had caught it. They would still be together today! Such a terrible loss of this gorgeous man, skater, husband and father. 😢❤️❤️

I dont think clogged arteries were the issue. I had read it was a defect in the heart that was actually genetic. But I do think he looked tired than usual here and the heart issue had to have been affecting him regardless. It's still so sad.
