This video contains: Full OEM-like cruise control installation and remote central locking retrofit/ upgrade to VW Polo 9N 2002+ model
I've been thinking of doing this upgrade for a while, and the time finally came! A full OEM install of cruise control and remote central locking to my 2003 VW Polo 9N.
I don't bring you this alone. I stand on the shoulders of our Polish and Russian brothers posting 144p clips of wiring mayhem through puffs of cigarette smoke, and the giants before them, populating your favorite VW Polo forums with all the know-how to make this upgrade possible. What I do believe I do as a first is document this all in one place for your viewing pleasure.

Hey, for sure you can troubleshoot without the whole dash out. Not sure if you have the stalks, but you never had the CCS functionality, or it just suddenly stopped? If the car came with CCS from factory and suddenly stopped, I would have the cars scanned via OBDII port to check for faults before disassembling anything. Same if the stalks were newly fitted, maybe it just need to be activated. I would think it unlikely the wiring suddenly got damaged.

Hey quick question! I'm loving your videos, and this in particular has been pretty useful to me.. I'm working on a infotainment project from scratch, involving microcontrollers, OBD-II and getting data from/to it. now after a lot of searching i had a lot of mixed results whenever my VW Polo mk4 9N (not the restyling 9N3) has the CAN BUS or just the ISO 9141/ISO 14231 K-Line protocol; The ideal thing here is to just use the K-Line just for diagnostic purposes, and the CAN bus to read actual data, just bc it's more reliable, fast and convenient; And i think also to be able to communicate with the other ECU Modules. Also do you happen to have some useful links to document myself about those "Self-Study Programme" about the 9N? I do happen to have this same model (even the color's the same LOL), but 5 doors instead of 2; Thanks again for your help, it has been really useful.

I would like to suggest a couple upgrades (which I also want to do and would appreciate seeing). First is 3DColorMFD, a full-color FIS (instrument cluster display) replacement (even for cars with no FIS like yours and mine, you put it in place of the LEDs) and the second is a steering wheel adapter called LIN2CAN from the same guy that makes the display, which allows to install a steering wheel from newer Volkswagen cars, think Golf 7 and similar, with the full feature set, steering wheel buttons and all. I really wanna do these upgrades but the instructions scare me hahaha. You could give them a try some day, they would make the car look way newer. And by the way, you could have used VCDS to program in the new remote, there's an adaptation channel in the central convenience channel for adding a new remote without the key turning shenanigans, that's how I did mine :D I also had to replace the convenience module, had the H variant, installed the E variant all the same.

Hey! Thanks for all the suggestions. The MFD looks pretty sick, bit complex too. I am not sure what content is best next. I was thinking of a VCDS vid dedicated to key install. Still have an extra unprogrammed immobilizer, could make a mini tutorial there (but that exists). Was also thinking of a full exterior refresh. Fix all damaged trim, repaint chips, polish whole car. Would love to see what it looks like "new". Lastly was maybe heated seats -> but I don't want leather, would fuck the interior as rest is cloth.

Have a seat ibiza 6l 2004 and I bought a cruise control kit from Kufatec with wiring loom and stalks and installed it about a year ago, it was more or less plug and play. Didn't remove dashboard either as I managed to do everything under the foot panel, though very tight. No soldering either as I just spliced in the wire to the brake light fuse and just taped it. Removing the clock spring was tricky but I did it without breaking it and also getting the steering wheel airbag off took me about have the CCS installation time as the hooks were almost impossible to find with a screwdriver. I got lucky though as I had the correct ECU and convenience module for cruise control otherwise not sure I would have attenpted this for cost reasons. Overall a good upgrade if you tend to do lots of journeys on the highway. I also bought an ebay center console armrest which makes long drives quite seemless. May I ask, what economy are you seeing on the highway with 1,2 three cylinder? I get roughly 5,4/100 km 80 km/h and about 6,2/100 km 100 km/h.
@P0L0G0D
@P0L0G0D 6 ай бұрын
Awesome. The fucking steering wheel airbag was a nightmare, took me a solid 30min I think. I did see posts online where others did it all via the footwell. In the days before this project I was digging around the check the module codes, access to fuse box, etc, and it was such a pain working out of the footwell. I also wanted the install to be clean -> wires routed correctly, not tapping the front end of the fuse box. I was also worried if I wan into issues I'd need to remove the dash anyway..., so no regrets from my side here :). Sounds like you had a more workable system -> with my change of convenience module I inherited an autolocking setting I didn't like + the CCS system needed activation via OBDII connection, which it seems like you had active already. In terms of economy, I'm actually recording my operating costs currently (for a future video on operating costs) and in my last 3119 km I've used 172.51 L of petrol, or 5.53 L/100KM average (mostly on highway). I would say in the at 80 kph I average 4.5L / 100km, and at 100 kph, 5.2 L / 100KM. I normally drive at 3750 RPM (when on highway) which is about 110-115 KPH on GPS in my car (will indicate more 120 kph at that RPM on speedo). The reason I like to stay at that RPM is because my engine has eaten oil when driving at 4000/4200 RPM (125-130KPH) for longer drives before. I think I may put out a video soon on fuel economy and comparison between manual drive vs CCS drive, because i have a suspicion CCS is consuming more fuel that I do when driving manually.
@aden3113
@aden3113 6 ай бұрын
@@P0L0G0D I did have to research a lot before actually attempting this because I park my car in a public garage (indoors thankfully) with not a lot of privacy or space, the ibiza dashboard is definitely more tricky to remove as I did remove it later on for other reasons, looking back it was a stroke of luck that I even managed to reach in to the connector I needed in the bulkhead through the footwell as the connector was positioned on the far left corner just within reach. I did also have to activate it with VCDS as well, initially I bought one of those cheap fake blue VCDS cables from amazon and managed to activate CCS with VCDS lite and a small laptop. I later on ditched it and bought the real VCDS cable from ROSS tech as I ended up needing it for more extensive troubleshooting (on other cars as well). It's interesting that the 1,2 three cylinder gets such good fuel economy, even on the highway. I have the 1,4 four cylinder (BBY) and the engine spins at almost exactly 3000 RPM at 100 km/h, at 120 km/h 3500 RPM and at 80 km/h it spins at roughly 2500 RPM which I thought would make it more frugal but seems not. History and maintenance makes a big difference as well of course and your car is definitely in better shape than mine. The oil burning and fuel consumption does increase with speed as you've said and I've found around 100 km/h to be the sweet spot. I believe many people share the same experience with cruise control and reduced economy, I certainly noticed a dip in mileage which I assume is due to less smooth driving. Even though it holds the speed constant it doesn't slow down when there's a car in front or traffic, most people naturally let off the gas pedal which saves fuel and allows the car to glide for a distance whereas with cruise control it keeps going until you break suddenly which is less efficient. CCS seems to work most efficiently with less traffic on empty stretches of road.

Fitting cruise control is ‘seemple’. I got a mechanic friend to do it for me . I have a 2005 1.9 Polo Gt TDi 130 hp Pd. Completely agree that it's a must, really great on long drives -> especially with a 1.9L: TDI ;)! Whether the car can accept a new component (like new stalks) and have working CCS is another story, really depends on the car. @P0L0G0D 3 ай бұрын
@@omarkul5320 For example listen at 12:33. Here I explain how the new stalk (which has the CCS function switch) is different from a non-CCS stalk. The difference is that there are more pins that pass electrical signals on the CCS stalks to the cars computer. In order to transmit those signals, your car will need the physical wires to carry these signals, and if you look at my stalk connector, I am missing these wires (you can see I later install them at 19:45). So in short, if the wire loom had all the necessary wiring in place, you could simply plug in new equipment and it would work, but in my case "the existing wire harness could not interact with the new component", i.e., the new stalks. Good luck on your install and let us know how it turns out! I also noticed you previously asked me how I got VCDS... if you have trouble activating it and are in Bavaria / Tyrol area, maybe I can hook you up ;). Good luck!

The software I use is called VCDS by RossTech. You can download the software for free but need a compatible OBDII connector for the program to work. You can buy the connector from RossTech, ebay, or 3rd party dealers. I bought mine off www.mft-fahrzeugtechnik.de/ / www.vcds-shop.de/. Apparently you can buy cracked connectors but I have no experience with that. If you don't want to make this investment then I recommend you have a local garage help with the final configuration.

Hey. No at the point, and all points, I only had one remote flip key, which is the one I bought over the course of this video. When I purchased my car it only came with two simple keys (I.e. 0:10). I'm pretty sure I followed these steps to pair the key: "a. With driver's window down and all doors closed, put the old key in the ignition and turn the electrics on. b. Lock the driver’s door from the outside with the fob key. c. Press unlock on the remote, wait a couple of seconds and press it again". This comes from the link in description to "Remote Central Locking" on poloclub.co.uk.

Hey. I have a 2004 (registered), but I think it was produced in 2003, but tbh, it doesn't matter. As long as you have a 9N model this can work. If your dealer looked it up on their system, it is likely nothing came up because technically, the car is NOT compatible with remote locking (i.e. in the stock configuration). The first step is switching out your comfort module. With this switched out, you can then pair a remote lock. Check out the description for some links on remote locking -> I am still going to remake a video on this in the future since many viewers want remote locking, not the cruise control :)

That's right, but you don't need VCDS for this upgrade necessarily. In my case the j393 control module wasn't programmed how I wanted. This module controls lock settings like autolocking above a certain speed, unlocking when you pull key from ignition etc. If your new j393 module has settings you are OK with then no need for the programming step after install. There is no way to really know the settings until you purchase and install the module though. The VCDS program by Ross Tech is free, you can download it on any computer. In order for the program to connect with your car, you'll need a compatible OBDII connector, but it has to be one specifically sold by Ross Tech. The OBDII connector itself stores the relevant serial code/ activation code for the program to run. There are 3 types of OBDII connectors. All have basic functionality unlocked on unlimited cars. Then for advanced functions you're limited to 3 VINs for the hobby connector, 10 for mid tier, or unlimited for pro. Your options are 1) buy a legit connector from the supplier or a 3rd party (I got mine here: www.mft-shop.de/ross-tech-vcds-hex-v2-hobby-3er-limit/) 2) buy one on eBay (either unlimited or limited with a few VINS left -> also note you can upgrade tiers) 3) maybe there are cheap cracked connector, but I wouldn't know. Lastly, if you think you won't need it much you can always visit a garage for minor tweaks needing diagnostic software.
