The key to this movie is not the scares, but the family dynamics. If ones doesn't believe that these characters loved one another then this film would fall apart..We root for this family and are terrified for them because we have grown fond of them.

@@Coleton.B. You misunderstand me. I'm mostly referring to the conspiracy crap involving curses and other such horseshit. Yes, Domonique Dunne was murdered not long after the film wrapped, but it was nothing to do with the supposed 'curse' caused by using the real skeletons, as some idiots like to believe. Same with Heather (not a victim of a curse either, or a Hollywood peado ring) and to be fair she died several years later. A tragic waste, but nothing 'creepy' about it.

Useless trivia time: Back in the .80s there weren't as many TV networks, and they weren't 24hrs, unless you had cable TV. The networks would shut down late at night and would start up again in the morning, and each time they'd play the Star Spangled Banner over images of the flag and the Lincoln Memorial. Then the station would go off air, and you'd only see snow on the screen.

Jerry always amazed me when it comes to create soundtracks for sci-fi or supernatural movies like Poltergeist, The Omen, Alien or Star Trek. You're afraid that there's something living in the closet that wants to eat you.

Hmmm, could it be because he had a vision for the scene and wanted to do it himself (aka directing) especially considering all the time & money it would take to create another dummy head that could be torn apart? And uhhhh there's a perfectly valid reason why Spielberg has been adamant about Hopper having directed it. He was LEGALLY OBLIGATED to. His contract for E.T. stated that he was to ONLY direct E.T. while E.T. was being filmed. If he admitted to directing or co-directing (as the rumors say) Poltergeist then he could've lost a TON of money....probably still could.

The movie was directed by Tobe Hooper (the texas chainsaw massacre) with Steven Spielberg as executive producer and truly, you can see Spielberg signature style all over. So much so that many think he waa the unnofficial director of Poltergeist The movie very successfully blends familly drama, supernatural thriller and injects touches of comedy and horror without any of those facets feeling out of place. Maybe not one of the scariest horror movies ever, but a thrilling ride nonetheless. I just love this movie. Also for this month, try to watch The Fly by the master of Body Horror David Cronnenberg starring Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. Extremely disturbing and one of the best horror movies of the 80's. The make up still holds up today (meaning you will be grossed out). As always your reactions are delightful to watch.

The filmmaking in this movie is very clever because the beginning shows us many instances of our everyday lives where things move "by themselves". The RC cars are controlled by a signal, the TV signals jumble up and the channels change seemingly by themselves, and the little wind up robot that is mechanical. It shows we already live in a world where there are invisible forces that make objects move by themselves, and that ghosts are a natural extension of that. That's why the only portal to our world they have is empty signals, invisible currents in the air that spirits can sometimes catch a ride on. The movie also quickly introduces the theme of respecting the dead: the jaded affluent mother is gonna flush a dead canary down the toilet and replace it before the kids notice, but the innocent little girl is sad for the bird and wants it properly buried. She worries about the bird being fed, warm, and kept company in death, and treats it like it were still alive. Then almost immediately, the family digs up the birds grave to build a swimming pool and Carol Anne gets a goldfish and gets over it. That's why the ghosts are so pissed, because by being ghosts they aren't really dead, but their remains have been treated like they are. They've been forgotten and disrespected by the living, who only use vague spiritual reasoning to honor the dead. "We'll put a headstone with their name on it. Then we'll put flowers on the grave. This area is beautiful to rest, but it would be more beautiful to live in. Lets move the cemetery and build houses. Im sure the dead wont mind. Afterall they're dead." But the ghosts arent really dead because they're still here. They're still people. I think the movie ends perfectly by showing it's the living people's fault this happened, so the ghosts "reclaim" the land by eating the house in front of everyone. The family doesn't win, they just leave, because they should leave. It's the spirits land

What's crazy is that this movie came out at the same time as E.T. and, as a fifth grader, I couldn't tell from the newspaper ads which movie was the scary one.

Anybody else remember those days before cable, when the networks would sign off after midnight and the tv would just be static for a few hours until morning? Many times as a kid I’d fall asleep on the couch watching Saturday Night Live, only to wake up hours later to a screen full of static.

7:30 Back in the day TV stations didn't transmit 24/7. They would shut down the transmitter in the middle of the night, but before shutting down they would play the National Anthem while showing patriotic images. They did this because no one wanted to pay for advertising when hardly anyone was watching TV. Then someone figured out that some companies would pay a lot of money to show very long advertisements and the "infomercial" was born.

I couldn't be happier that you're doing a Spooktober! I will say this about this story, there's a novelization of the movie and it's one of the scariest things I've ever read. It's much more spooky than the movie. You're just the best reactor and I can't appreciate you more! I love "watching" movies with you!

The skeletons in the pool at the end were real, bought from a company that sold skeletons to schools, medical centers, and research facilities. They were cheaper and easier to get than fake ones, which weren’t as easily available as they are now. The actress wasn’t told this until after the filming was done.

You might wanna check out the story of the Super Bowl 1988 poster. It is visible in your video on the wall behind Robbie's bed at around 5:58. Remember the movie came out in 1982 and there's a poster for the 1988 Super Bowl on the wall. If that wasn't weird enough, this Super Bowl took place in San Diego on the very night that Heather O'rourke was rushed to the hospital where she died the next day. She died in San Diego as well. Thinking about it that's creepy a.f.

"Little Girl Lost" is episode 91 of the American television anthology series The Twilight Zone. It is about a young girl who has accidentally passed through an opening into another dimension. Her parents and their friend attempt to locate and retrieve her. It is based on the 1953 short story by Richard Matheson.

Skip the first one because the 2nd is a reboot/remake with a bigger budget and it’s just brilliant! It’s a horror film that’s also a comedy ..an absolute must for any horror fan!

5:55 It's hard to remember, but there was a time when clowns weren't considered creepy. They were colorful and silly people meant to entertain small children. John Wayne Gacy and horror movies have changed that forever. Clowns have kind of become the prime example of something that is supposed to be innocent and harmless but feels sinister anyway.

John Wayne Gacy being a "killer clown" is my favorite thing everyone knows but isnt actually true. The scary clown motif is similar to the scary cross dressing serial killer motif, it's not based in reality but uses imagery that makes people uncomfortable on an emotional level.

Tobe Hooper directed this movie but rarely gets the credit. That’s because Spielberg produced and was very hands on. He was so hands on that the crew and Hooper himself got frustrated with him. He certainly had an impact on the movie but this is Hooper’s film.

@@YeeLeeHaw He did write the screenplay along with two others and was on set for parts of the production. It is also undeniably touched by Hooper. If Spielberg wanted credit for directing the movie he should have made himself the director. If that happened it would have been a different film.
@BrianSettles88

@@TackJorrance It’s hard to know the full truth with something like that. The big problem being that Spielberg was already considered Hollywood royalty by then. You can’t take any of it at face value because people might want to work with him in the future. The only certainty is that he should have hired a lesser director if he was going to do that. Hooper was brought on to give it credibility as a horror film and got a raw deal.
@kthx1138
@kthx1138 2 жыл бұрын
Spielberg came up with the story, co-wrote the screenplay, supervised the editing, visual-FX and worked very closely with Jerry Goldsmith on the score. He was clearly in love with this project, and, control freak that he is, he had to oversee Tobe Hooper's direction on the set as well.

A lot of the special effects in 1982 when this was released, were new. Spielberg and Lucas pioneered many effects and made them better and more dramatic and more realistic in their films. That made them famous. REMEMBER no cgi then. it didn't exist. it was all practical affects
