POLTERGEIST - WTF Happened to this Horror Movie
WTF Happened to this Horror Movie is a series that digs into the backstories of all your favorite (and sometimes most hated) horror films. The idea has always been to provide an inside look at what went right (and often what went wrong) with some of these classics (and non-classics).
For our first installment, we're looking at a movie that I'm sure left a huge mark on all of us as kids, POLTERGEIST. Hollywood has had its share of "cursed" productions, meaning things behind the scenes went badly, but how about those that really were...ya know...cursed, like in a literal way? POLTERGEIST is definitely one of the titles people keep circling back to, with many citing the tragic fates of several folks involved and some spooky goings on behind the scenes as evidence of its cursed status.
In this installment, you'll learn it's not so much what happened during the making of POLTERGEIST that led to its cursed status, but more what happened long after the film came out. Additionally, we've got the scoop on those pesky rumors that Steven Spielberg ghost directed (pun intended) the film for Tobe Hooper, killer clowns, real skeletons in the swimming pool and more. Check it out!

Saw this movie when i was like 6 when it came out thanks to older cousins, and it led to fear of closets and clowns that i still have to this day. The scene where he pulled his face off i would not watch i hid my face in a pillow and despite me being a hard core horror fan i did not watch that scene until i was in my 20s, all due to such a deep fear this movie left on me at such a young age. It is one of my favorite movies to this day.

There’s a recent podcast of Imaginary Worlds where they talk with the crew of the movie, about ‘cursed’ movies in general, and how they hate that people think it’s cursed. They talk to the guy who ordered the skeletons and said ordering real skeletons happened a lot in the business. The director of the third movie fondly remembers Heather sticking around behind the scenes to learn how to direct. According to the podcast, Heather became ill, was misdiagnosed, and what she really had ended up killing her.

I am almost 40 & the traces of terror and awe that this film STILL makes me feel are a true mark of a horror movie. It’s not just the cast, it’s totally 80’s (they will NEVER make films like this again) & another big factor is the score music.

Originally, Heather O'Rourke went in to audition for E.T., and the story goes that Drew Barrymore was at that same audition to try out for Poltergeist! After their auditions, he switched the roles, feeling that Drew was a better fit for E.T. and vice versa, feeling that Heather fit more for Poltergeist There is only one reference to Dana early in Poltergeist 2, and it is said that she is away at college.

@@johnfitzpatrick3094 That's not even a slight. Spielberg's been a close friend of Jack Velenti for decades (inc then). Velenti later voiced a character in an animation prod by Spielberg. The MPAA has a history of having double standards for what gets a particular certificate if you're an Independent film or a Hollywood one. Or what is insisted on being cut or not cut. Surely a coincidence that the companies with lots of money and access to stars and priority bookings in restaurants, clubs etc get preferential treatment, and the Indies get treated like shit.

Despite all that went on before and during filming, there was only one scene that genuinely scared Heather O'Rorke: the scene in which she was holding on to the headboard while a wind machine blew toys into the closet behind her. She had a meltdown while filming that scene, at which point Steven Spielberg stopped everything, took Heather in his arms and told her that she would not have to do that scene again. During the filming of the scene in which Robbie is getting strangled, the clown's arms became extremely tight and Oliver Robins started to choke. At first Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper thought that Oliver was ad-libing when he said "I can't breathe!", telling him to look in the camera.....that was until Mr. Spielberg saw the boy's face turning purple, promptly running over and removing the clown's arms from Oliver's neck.

SO you are not going to mention the plagiarism suit brought against poltergeist by Horror legend Richard Matheson who wrote the short story later turned in to a Twilight Zone episode called "Little Girl Lost". Wherein six year old Betina MIller, disappears in to the wall of her house after taking to the "Radio people". Thereafter she is heard talking from the air, running across the ceiling and screaming from the radio. Eventually after advice from a psychic, her father is able, by locating a portal behind a bookcase, to pass in to the 4th dimention of the walls of the house too, with a rope around him, is able to locate his daughter and be pulled back out by his wife and son before the malevolent forces that dwell there kill her. Spielberg fought the case tooth and nail but eventually lost, only to find Matheson demanded no compensation, simple an acknowledgement of his contribution, leading to later prints adding a inspired by credit.
