There’s a popular theory that the 1982 Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg collaboration Poltergeist was cursed, but if there was a curse in play it didn’t extend to the box office. Poltergeist was a major hit for MGM, and to this day is considered one of the best horror films of the ‘80s. A sequel followed four years later, and the strange events surrounding the production added to the curse theory - but again, the film was financially successful, so MGM wanted more.
Sadly, Poltergeist III was struck by such a major tragedy that the film was barely even finished, and when it reached theatres in a compromised form in 1988 there weren’t many movie-goers who were interested in seeing it. The tragedy, combined with low box office numbers, caused the film franchise to go dormant for nearly thirty years - so let’s dig into What the F*ck Happened to This Horror Movie.
Watch or Own Poltergeist 3 here! amzn.to/39eiuaQ
This episode was written by Cody Hamman, Edited and narrated by Lance Vlcek and Produced by John Fallon. Berge Garabedian is the Executive Producer.
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

Fact that the director wanted to shelve the movie, after heather's death, but the studio didn't care and prioritised profit before human decency says a lot about the kinds of people on the top of the ladder
@RB01.10

Was the family okay with releasing it though ? Not trying to downplay this, but most if not all films shot before an actor from the film dies still get released, especially if the family okays it. Not only that but shelving the film causes the studio to lose money especially for the actors and everyone involved Hell, “Land Before Time” and “All Dogs go to Heaven” were both released after their star Judith Barsi (and her mother) was tragically murdered by the father.

Trouble with Hollywood is that they get greedy and always make the same misstake. However as they are a Company, which needs profit to operate, I can't blame them for wanting more. However I can blame them for really screwing it up. 90% Of all remakes and sequals seem to lose something from what they are following up from. I guess it comes down to the viewer. When he or she watches a movie that is all new with a brand new cast, they get hooked. If you have not seen it before, the more of a chance you have in liking it. So when sequals come out, the high of seeing new stuff becomes dull.

Poltergeist is a true classic horror movie that has aged very well. The movie and its great special effects are still as scary as they were when the movie was released. Poltergeist 2 wasn't a bad movie either, but it already had some very obvious "jump the shark" warning signs. The added storyline with Kane ,his cult and that cave underneath the swimming pool was quite good, but it still collided with the "old cemetary" reveal at the end of the first movie. Also, Poltergeist 2's ending had a satisfying conclusion with no loose ties remaining. There was clearly not even the slightest need for a third installment.

I’m honestly glad the movie studios released the film. I didn’t know about her passing until I was much older. I enjoyed this film a lot as a kid. I just watched this at 41, and overall I still enjoyed it, but it’s much sadder now knowing the backstory. Regardless, it was good to see her one last time. I personally believe she would have wanted it released. I mean, it is her last work, and her fans appreciate it. I think it was better than the second one. The mirrors were a fantastic idea, and really the star of the film. I just wished they would have taken the care to finish it off properly. Them screaming Caroline 90% of the movie didn’t help. Frankly it was obnoxious, but it is what it is. Good film, with a tragic ending. I’ll always miss her.

I think the best we're gonna get after Poltergeist III is a 1990 TV movie called ''Child In The Night'' it starred Jobeth Williams and Tom Skerritt together and was a great thriller about a little boy witnessing his father's brutal murder. It also starred Elijah Wood who was in The Lord Of The Rings. The only other thing that even comes close to Poltergeist III is Picket Fences which had Tom Skerritt and Zelda Rubinstein in it.

No denying she was a cute kid and great actress. I say this as a guy who was younger than her by 4 years at the time of her passing and understandable that it’s hard to watch for many but also it is good that it left a legacy I mean she really carried the franchise. Still I sympathize. My crush in teen years and entering adulthood Aaliyah starred in Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned. Creepy foreshadowing names there as she would be dead in just over a year at 22. Very watchable movies turned into morbidly depressing at just the thought of watching them. It was like an infinite vortex of heartbreak.

I remember watching Poltergeist 3 several times as a kid. I loved it. I was especially fond of the mirrors in the hallway and the puddle scene in the parking garage. I rewatched it again a few years ago. While it's not the same level as the original, I still enjoyed it. It's schlocky 80s fun.

Larry - The Funhouse is excellent - it really has a pervasive air of sleaze and I mean that in the best way. Was there a suggestion that Joey was abused by the carnival workers before his parents come to pick him up? Or is he just traumatised by seeing Gunther/The Monster? I felt the movie left this question open, it really disturbed me.

I knew about Heather's passing and the cause, but didn't know she had been misdiagnosed with Crohn's and the medication she was taking caused her cheeks to swell. It's very eerie on a personal level, as I suffered a bowel obstruction around ten years ago. When I presented to the ER, the staff there were 99.9% sure I had late-stage stomach cancer. I've had several incidents since then requiring surgery and now have to be very careful about what I eat, which is considered a "low-residue" diet. A blocked bowel is indescribably painful. If I had not gone to the hospital when I did, I'm almost certain I would've died of shock.

It runs in my family my little sis had it from age 13, dad mid 50's and me 24 now aged 39 and even with my whole colon removed 5 years ago now the inflammation can be more of a nightmare than any horror movie. I took steroids for more than 10 years I never got moon face the docs n nurses was surprised but instead I got a weaker immune system, and many other issues no one wants to know about. Stay healthy folks

Same here I developed in in early 2016 and lost over 50 pounds and a lot of blood. I also had a lot of severe pain and several bloody stools a day at first. Eventually though I got on some prescription meds which did help but eventually I decided to get the full on colectomy surgery. It’s a lot better now, yeah I still get a little blood but I have maybe only 2-3 bowel movements a day. Imodium and Metamucil can help too.

Poltergeist 1 was genius and I would put the special effects alongside The Thing. Poltergeist 2 had something special by bringing Kane into the foreground as a super natural antagonist that could stand up to the IT. Poltergeist 3 was a tragedy, both onscreen and offscreen. RIP to all the actresses/actors and/or their family members that had passed during that time.

I was just too many bad occurences in this movie, letting them know this shouldn't be filmed. Reminded me of the Egyptians burial pyramid that was not to be broken into, and those 5 excavators who broke in, strange occurences, and death happened to them. The little girl, Heather, really showed bravery in making these films, esp Poltergeist 1, like she didnt have a worry in this world. All I can say is only God knows, exactly what happened.

For all the flaws in the film, i feel Poltergeist III is sort of the black sheep of the family with some pretty obvious story flaws. But that being said, Heather O'Rourk gave an absolutely riveting performance and she did it with her health deteriorating. And added to that, I felt the film had a very "haunting" atmosphere and really had a look and a feel all its own. In the end, I feel like Poltergeist III belongs in the annals of good films that were sadly overlooked but now can a enjoy a cult status and can be appreciated by those of us that see it as a very bitter-sweet conclusion to a great horror franchise .

@@katycheckley Speaking of VHS, ever noticed when hiring a video rental back in the 80's and 90's when a film came to the scary bits, the video and audio quality would go very bad? That is because people would rewind the tape a thousand times to watch the scary parts over and over, and over a long amount of time the tape would get damaged, I particularly remember that with Poltergeist III every time the scary parts came with the mirrors the tape looked like it went from top quality to really poor quality for just a few seconds. And there was always a sticker on it telling the renter to rewind it when finished and hardly any of the tapes were actually rewound.
